Took delivery of our's yesterday, replacing an i3. Old software (waiting on update). We have a Model 3 as well which we'll use for long distance (twice a year we'll drive to Italy from the UK) but I love the size of the car (good for us, children are 18 and 20 now) and as it improves (plug and charge, flatter charging curve, economy improvements, network improvements) I could see this being the only car we'll need. All the best

@@MrBenj0219 I guess my high level statement is that it is very obvious that the Tesla is built by a company that is focussed on EV's whereas both the BMW and the VW have issues that relate to the manufacturers legacy ICE history. That has it's upsides and downside. In your position I'd consider a number of questions, mainly centred around what do you want this car for ? Quite a disparate choice, I can't stand SUV's and would never consider one so the ID.4 is out for for me, I'd love BMW to build a proper EV 5 series touring , but that's me. The Tesla replaced a Cayman GTS. I'd always thought I'd get a BMW M3 as a practical performance car before EV's so for me the Model 3 is a practical performance car. I went for the LR Dual Motor (my wife was a bit shocked by the acceleration of the performance) and fitted KW springs and Mountain Pass Performance rear camber arms. These were installed and set up by a specialist workshop. I also bought 19" wheels from The New Aero to replace the stock 18's. I might buy the performance (software upgrade). The car corners flatter, rides lower (good for aero) turns into a corner much sharper for no loss of ride comfort, if anything it's improved. It's good fun if you want to push it a bit. When we want to go on a long trip it's spacious and comfortable, the supercharger network is the best in the business, it's the cheapest (in the UK and EU), it's integrated properly into the software to make journeys easier than in an ICE (no dealing with Italian self service petrol pumps that won't take your credit card). Our 830 mile drive to Italy takes no longer than in a 520d we owned perviously. Great efficiency + decent size battery + fast charging = quick journey times. The Taycan pulls the same trick but it's nav is not quite there yet, no plug and charge etc. The VW drives like a VW, if you like VW's you'll like this car. Compared to the Tesla the software is awful, I can see why less patient people would reject the car. It does not show you where the EV charging station are en route but it does show you the petrol stations. The Taycan and e-Tron both have similar legacy ICE issues, they'll tell you to take the car in to change the engine oil. The ID.3 is rear wheel drive, fairly tidy and you can get it a little loose at the back but the electronics soon bring it back in. Steering is overly light for me and lacks feel, the driving modes seem to make no difference to that at all (rumoured that will be coming in a software update). It's a much smaller car than the Tesla, tighter turning circle, hatchback, very roomy inside for the outside space (advantages of a bespoke bed platform. If the majority of your driving is in you local area, shopping etc then it's a good choice (when they've sorted the software). I'd struggle to drive this car to Italy, it would take a lot longer due to it's smaller battery, slower charging, smaller charging network and in the winter woeful inefficiency (summer its efficiency is comparable to the model 3). It's our 2nd car, our daily driver, it's fine for that. The i4, I'm not sure I'd buy it on looks alone but that is of course subjective. Hard to comment as no one has driven it yet but I have been underwhelmed by BMW's EV's of late, I'm more of a fan of the bespoke EV platform than the compromise of shoving an EV drivetrain in an ICE platform.I'm sure it will be built beautifully, but when I looked it seemed very expensive. It will be interesting to see if Tesla improve their build quality (mine has had no issues) when they start manufacturing in Berlin. They have hired the head of quality control from Merc. The 4680 cells and single stamp construction elements will cut their cost of production, plus lower delivery costs. They'll either drop the price, increase the margin or a combination of both. A cheaper, better built Tesla will be a tempting proposition.

Hello Chris, "Sometimes faster than 130 in Eco". I think I remember, that the drive settings in Eco are not Eco if you start the car. So, if you start in Eco and go on the motorway there is no speed limit. Once you switched to comfort or sport and you swich back to eco the limit is at 130. Strange and annoying. I never tested this. Hi, thanks for your video’s. I have a question. They delivered my id3 and i have to say it lives up to what your video’s are conveying. Much appreciated. The question is when will Apple Wireless Carplay come to the ID-3 update. Spoke with a dealer but he said it will take months before it comes. Also he said it is not an online update but a visit to the dealer is necessary, and will take days. So when will wireless carplay for ios be available and when will updates be available via the app iso a visit to the dealer? If you like it i can share my first thoughts of the ID3, let me know if that would be appreciated.

Is this going to be gone soon, also on the left ledstrip on the front the moisture can be seen clearly at night when the leds are on, it appears darker on the fogged up parts, you would expect continuous led brightness along the whole led strip the one between the headlighs and the vw logo on the bonnet.

So...winter consumption is exactly 30 % more?
@Psi-Storm
@Psi-Storm 3 жыл бұрын
No, you use around 4 kWh/h on heating. So a 2 hour drive reduces your usable battery from 56 kWh to 48 kWh. There is some additional losses in the battery on cold temperature but on a long drive at 130 km/h those should warm up within a reasonable time frame. Heating is front loaded, maintaining a temperature uses much less energy than heating the car up. So on short drives to and from work every day your consumption could be even higher than 30% more. On long range it's probably closer to 15%, even less if you can preheat the car with grid power instead of battery.

@@Psi-Storm The air also gets much more dense at low temperatures effecting wind resistance. One must also take tires into consideration, I use studded winter tires which effects rolling resistance quite a bit.

The car industry needs battery technology that doesn’t get affected by cold weather, or bigger range. There are many other battery technologies that we already know about, and by the middle of this decade we could see 1000km range batteries that charge in 5 minutes.

For a 1000 km range you would probably need 130 kWh. To charge 80 % of this amount in 5 minutes you would require a 1250 kW charger to charge the battery at 10 C. Will we be there by the middle of the decade?

solid batteries is the solution
@antonthompson7838

@@abraxastulammo9940 There are lots of companies making big waves in battery technology, some have made lithium ion batteries with carbon nanotubes. Volkswagen have invested $300 million in a battery start up called QuantumScape along with Bill Gates and Continental, to bring solid state batteries to their fleet in 2024 for their more premium brands such as Bugatti, Lamborghini, Bentley Porsche and Audi. Then in 2026 a 20gWh factory will come on stream, before full scale batteries from QuantumScape begin in 2028 just in time for Volkswagen’s wholesale switch to electric power. The solid state batteries have a 50% increase in energy density over conventional EV batteries at 1000 Watt hours per litre which is about 4 times more than what the Tesla Model 3 can store. A car with solid state batteries will be 30% lighter than normal batteries, and be able to travel 1000km between charging and charge much faster. Toyota has been working on solid state batteries and says they will be ready to go next year.
