I love how Thomas / other German reviews can give Metric and Imperial figures on the fly and without fuss or complaining unlike a typical American reviewer that struggles to give anything other than American system, they say it's too hard, or you can work it out yourself or simply ignores anything exists outside America, outstanding German / Thomas efficiency 👍👍

I think people who buy this car, buys it for comfort and familiarity. And I'm sure it's okay. But it still feels like something is wrong. It's not a nice looking car, inside and outside. I am not really getting the comparison to Tesla 3. Tesla here in the Nordics starts from 42 900 eur, while ID7 starts from 58 800 eur. They are on price so far away from each other and almost in different segments. People are shopping between ID3, ID4, Tesla 3 and soon EX30 that broke some preorder records here for EVs - not ID7.

As someone that has been driving a polestar 2 for a couple months, a frunk is very nice and usefull, i would pay a little extra to have one, however it's not a dealbreaker. The thing with the frunk is I usually have a lot of stuff just laying in my trunk(under trunk) Stuff like screwdrivers, charging cable(you never use it if you charge home), car cleaning products, cloth,... If you have a frunk to put those in you always have a nice and empty trunk which i really love.

I had the opportunity to sit and see the Volkswagen ID 7 Pro at the car show in Munich, and my review is as follows: a lot of hard plastic, the cockpit is soft only in the upper part, while everything else is hard plastic. There's a lot of hard plastic on the doors. It's a shame that it has a rod on the engine hood instead of cylinders, and it's a shame that it lacks rear disc brakes, using drums instead. VW made a lot of cost-cutting for this car, and the showroom price was 75,000 euros. It's not worth that money. It's a pity that those who give reviews are paid to speak only the best about cars, and no one gives an honest review of the car. It's better to get a new Skoda Superb diesel or petrol, which is better made, has comfort, better build quality, has disc brakes, cylinders on the hood, and can cover over 900 km. Plus, it's at least 20,000 euros cheaper with a good equipment package.

The frunk for me isn't essential as a storage option per se, all I need is a place to store the charging cables, med kit and tire repair gubbins. Stuff you rarely need (if home charging is available) but it just takes up space in the boot. So all in all, yes, but a tiny one is fine. Casestudies would be the Volvo EX30 or ioniq 5. They are even a bit large. Always appreciated anyhow.

Frunk is nice for charging cables and would be great if other items were there like the air compressor, warning triangle and so on. I only use the charging cable on road trips where the trunk might be full of bags and it's nice to have a separate compartment for it, cable might be dirty or wet as well. Under the floor of the boot is not practical to store cables

It seems that Honda and Mazda are the only car markers who still know how to make a proper interior with luxuries like buttons and knobs. So many in the industry didn’t bother to think that maybe there’s a difference between tapping a mobile phone screen while sitting versus tapping an infotainment display as your car hurtles down the highway at 70+ MPH. Like, one device is gently nestled in your palm while your thumb calmly navigates the UI while the other is at the end of your arm’s reach as your finger jostles around. Nobody in their right mind would ever use a smartphone if they had to use it like we use these “smart” car displays.

To get people out of their Passat, though...it's €22,000 more expensive I believe, and that's for a version that is slaughtered on long distance by the Koreans and Tesla. The basic Model S (I sound like a fanboy here) is just as roomy as the ID.7 Tourer in terms of liters and of course waaaayy faster on long trips and, well, idiotic drag races. 200+ liters smaller than a new Passat as well, that's a bit unfortunate. High floor I guess, and due to lazy German engineering, zero frunk where a Lucid air that's the same size has 280 liters of frunk and 40 kWh more battery. Not in the same price range, but Lucid just ACTUALLY tried making a good EV. VW on the other hand is great with steer help. Car Maniac said he didn't miss it though, the Lucid Air is just really nice to drive. I hope the bottom of the barrel version will soon arrive and somewhat compete on price with EQE, I4/I5, ID.7 and Model S. That Lucid Air will be RWD and have a deeper rear footwell from omitted battery modules there which I didn't know: is standard on all Taycans.

Great review as ever. What strikes me is how slow VW is able to react to things it knows it has to change. We knew about VW (and Audi etc) software problems about five years ago. In this car as reviewed it still has not quite caught up with Tesla and others. VW have said for over a year that they want real buttons back, yet still can not deliver them for another year or so. Over those sorts of time lags loyal customers, of whom I was once one, are lost. Contrast this with almost any marque based East of - say - Athens or West of - say - Coventry. Many premium manufacturers look down on American marques for design and fleetness of market reaction. I would say both Ford and Stellantis are looking pretty nimble at the moment by comparison with VW.. That said this looks like a perfectly nice car if you like that sort of thing.

Considering the massive problems Ford is dealing with EV sales and bleeding money, and using VW Group's MEB platform I am not sure if they can be used as good examples of anything. Isn't Stellantis majority European owned considering Fiat Chrysler by far largest owner was Exor (Agnelli family) and I would imagine PSA was even more in European hands? But yeah VW really made huge plunder with software and Herbert Diess was at least part of the problem. For VW's sake ID2 should be here this year, but it will still take at least till 2025. outside of Tesla Volvo EX30 would be pefect example of car that will stirr the European market I would say in the coming 7 months. Coming from a company majority owned by Geely. VW Group, Mercedes and BMW will have their hands full for the next 2 years. Especially VW Group will want to build everything from software to the batteries totally by themself and they are already late. Scale is their thing and I of course understand the need on building all by themself. Especially for batteries and platforms. ID3 to ID5 are just not cutting it anymore.

Ford have way fewer resources than VW, so have fewer options. What I think is impressive about Ford is how decisive they have been: adopting the MEB platform; paring back the model range; producing good EVs with a nod to the Tesla iPad stuck onto the dashboard; and battery investment. They also provide VW with their off road pick up trucks. You are right about Stellantis. I still think of Chrysler…. @@tissot233

Servus Thomas, watching your reviews for a while now, always amazed by how pro and very straightforward you are. Definitely the best reviews 🙌😊 As a French (living in österreich seit 2021, Gruss Got Oida 😄), for the speed on the motorway, it's 130 km/h in dry conditions (as you said), when it's rainy, the rule is : as soon as you have to use the whippers, you have to slow down to 110km/h.... that's the rule, but you know French people, there's always room for personal interpretation 😅

I just installed ID.4 ErgoActive seats in my ID.3, it’s a huge upgrade over the standard manual seats I had. However, these ID.7 seats are giving me wet dreams, they look extremely nice and comfortable. Oh well, can’t have it all. 😅

@JurgenLahey 10 ай бұрын
Quick question on that upgrade, do you need to put extra wiring or were the necessary cables already there? I would consider the same upgrade on my ID.3 :-)
@dklap3388
@dklap3388 10 ай бұрын
@@JurgenLahey yes had to add new cables, and also switch the airbags from my old seats (didn’t do any of this myself). The old manual seats only had one plug (for heat and airbag), while the new seats has 2 plugs. The new ones also has electrical adjustment, massage, memory and thigh support, and they offer so much more support than the old one. 😊 But it has been a long project, it’s not easy to find ErgoActive seats for sale, since not too many ID cars has been scraped yet. I think mine come from a ID.4 test vehicle. My backseats are also getting new fabric to match the new front seats, will get it installed tomorrow. As far as I know, the ID.4 backseats don’t fit in ID.3, so that became my solution. It looked really weird with the new front seats and the old ID.3 design in the backseats.

Looking at this as a company lease car but unfortunately here in The Netherlands the ID7 is 20-30% more expensive to lease than the new Tesla Model 3 AWD Highland. And that's without factoring in that for the ID7 to be on the same level options wise (heated seats, heat pump and so on) you need to add around 3500 euros to the price which of course has an effect on the lease rate. List price in a similar configuration (color, options, etc.) is a difference of over 15k. Monthly rate I'm quoted is around €1100 for the Tesla vs around €1400 for the ID7..

Want to have a Tesla 3 but VW for the price of the Tesla S Plaid and the quality of a Dacia Spring, then this is the car for you. The car in the video is around 75.000, you can get almost 2x tesla3 highlands for that price. You can take of course leasing rates with a 10% rate and with 10k km limit. I hope VW will be squeezed enough so that they go back building quality cars again.

The ID7 is once again one of those Volkswagens whose exterior design already says: "Life is too short for a VW". Thank God, because if the ID7 had had a great design, I would have been annoyed by this cheap and lousy slider user interface. So I just feel for the poor people in the VW factories who will lose their jobs because of such horrible products. Not because Tesla is so good (spoiler there are really things Tesla does well, but not many), but because everything VW has delivered since the Golf 7 is simply no longer buyable.

Yes to the Frunk topic - nice review, nice car but way too expensive. Yes it has some nice features (IQ Light, trunk, seats,…) as you‘ve mentioned but please also mention for example the cost of all those mandatory services you have to do according to VW to not loose the car guarantee probably 500 to 600 Euros for each 15.000 km. Tesla 0 Euros for example. I would not mind paying 2.000 - 3.000 more when buying the car but in total 20.000 Euros+ more expensive compared to the competition = no thanks.

Because of emission regulations, at least in the UK and EU, they must sell increasing numbers of ZEV vehicles as a proportion of total sales until their fleet average drops to zero ICE vehicles in 2035. But I think you are right in the sense they won’t sell much of this model, they will probably push out as many ID 2, 3 and 4’s as they need to meet regs.

Regarding the frunk debate, I like it to keep my EVSE, safety equipment and jumper box/compressor out of the way. And if the car is designed with RWD proportions (Mach-E) or based on a RWD ICE platform, I like it when manufacturers make use of the space leftover after the engine is removed. It’s so annoying to see how much space is wasted under the hood of the i4. Looking at this car I could tell right away it probably wouldn’t have a frunk because of how short the hood is and I’m ok with that. But if you’re gonna chase RWD proportions or build off of a RWD platform, it just looks cheap and lazy to not include a frunk.

As an EV owner having a front trunk isn’t super important but when an EV doesn’t I know that it wasn’t engineered well or efficiently. It’s one of those things that show how things were planned and packaged and if it doesn’t have one it shows a lack of effort on that front.

So a Model 3 Long Range is about 15-20k and even more once you add options to make it equivalent to the Tesla. It is a much nicer car but I don't think it's anywhere near the same price range. Hey Thomas, regarding French speed limitations when raining, the French law is rather imprecise. It does not draw a line like in Germany with the road surface, so even a very light rain like the one in your video can be regarded as "rain" and thus reduce speed limits to 110 km/h. Now like most rules in France, most policemen won't care at all and you will see several persons driving 130 km/h in such conditions, but there is always a risk you meet a policeman being strict on the law and receive a speed ticket.

8:54 tesla is leading in gathering information from video feed, true.. but yesterday I drove MY and M3 and then Smart #1. and the smaller and the cheapest one had the best camera for the city. Because while blindspot camera in tesla is useful I have the same information on Smart's HUD (take this Tesla), at the same time, cameras that show you your expensive wheels during parking are so much more useful than a view of the pavement. In that case I prefer VW over Tesla. I am however not buying driving selector, Tesla and MB/Smart do that so much better. and ofc this window control. What a waste of tech. another button that reacts slowly and adds confusion. Still don't get while there is no froot in the second-gen of EV. In Smart you have a super smart one. just for cables and nothing more.. and this is all you need, because if you are on holiday, fully packed, and suddenly you need your type 2 cables, only to realise they are on the -2 level in your boot? a nightmare. depends on when we will see that in the UK I may consider it as my Enyaq replacement but for wider audience, I am not sure it will win with M3 IF you don't need a boot space and access. Otherwise, I will buy Smart#1 for the half of the lease price.

Great review Thomas. Seems like this car would be cross shopped against the Hyundai Ioniq 6 more so than the Model 3. The Hyundai with 800-volt architecture and vehicle to load undercuts this by several thousand dollars and it has a frunk. To answer your question about the importance of a frunk for me the answer is YES, because if a ground up BEV does not offer a frunk and the features are no different than the ICE counterpart I would go for the ICE vehicle which in this case the VW Arteon SEL R line seems like a better buy as it is cheaper and a better performance sedan.
