Thanks for the video, it was helpful. A few tips: Always remove or at least loosen the fill plug before draining, if it's stuck it's much better to know before you drain. When it stops draining start the engine, shift through the gears, and turn it off, more fluid will drain. I did this 3 times and got a gallon of old fluid out instead of under two quarts. I've done this with many transmissions. Another option is to disconnect one of the cooler hoses and run the engine to pump the fluid out, this works very well too. Instead of filling with a pump I use a hose with a funnel jammed in it. Put the hose in the hole with the funnel in the engine compartment and pour it in, much faster & easier than a pump. Something I discovered on this trans, if you pour in a gallon without starting the engine, the fluid will be up to the fill plug and some will spill out. Next time I'll add three quarts then start it before adding the 4th.

@DonziGT230
@DonziGT230 4 жыл бұрын
@@eeckeck The pipe has to be removed to drain the fluid regardless if you choose to run the engine and shift the gears. After it stops draining you then start the engine and shift through the gears, then turn it off. After a short wait it'll start draining again. When it stops you can run the engine and shift again.

That Torx fill plug has an O-ring. Make sure it is in place when you put that plug back in. It is just a rubber O-ring you might be able to get from the hardware store. If you are like me you might even have a small assortment of O-rings that may fit.

Nice job sir thus far this is the best procedure for the DYI'er making it simple, keep up the good work appreciate the effort in making the video. If the filter is a screen mesh type, replacement may not be necessary. I concur with the drain and refill process being done 4x. I had to perform this on my 2017 Passat.

If you think that is dirty look what is in the pan that won't drain out. The pan is designed in such a way that there is no way to drain that nasty gunk out and some old fluid even remains in there too. To get that all out you must drop the pan. I blow out my garage with a battery leaf blower first so there is less of a chance that a hard breeze might get dust in there when the pan is off. These things are sometimes problematic when you don't have dirt in them. When the pan is off you will realize why all the fluid does not come out of it (yes, I know much of it is also in the torque converter but that is different).
@MrTheHillfolk
@MrTheHillfolk 4 жыл бұрын
Yea I'll try and change it again in a few weeks from the first change if it was nasty ,because of half the old fluid staying in the torque converter. And there's a whole other debate on if ya wanna change the filter again too.

I've got a vag-com and I'm gonna diy it,I've gotta climb under and check my trans code as I'm searching for the fluid and filter and they want that info. The prices on aftermarket fluids and filters that meet spec is quite a range. Fluid seems to range from 7-8$ a liter to 15 or so, and up to 26 for oem fluid. Filters range all over from 15$ for probably junk to 30-40$ for a decent filter and even approaching 100$ for oem. That's where ya need your trans code , for the filter. I searched it on ECS because they have a nice layout to search.

With the level tube installed and drain bolt removed, it seems impossible to overfill. My Kia van has a 6-speed auto and as long as the transmission temperature is within a small range, the fluid will trickle out in a steady stream from the upper fill hole on the valvebody when the level is correct. But, the engine has to be running for the level to be correct. How has the Maxlife fluid been working in there? I only wonder because the dealer's fluid is so expensive. I know a parts store that sells Pentosin ATF1 LV for $50 for a 5 liter jug. A lot of places sell it for 80 something. As Pentosin is know to make some of the fluids that Volkswagen uses that may very well be a good choice for these cars. I should get some of that. I wonder if it is on sale or something since a lot of people are at home in these dismal times. Even not on sale that is a good price. I think FCP Euro sells it too. It is well worth a look even if you don't decide to buy from them. They have a lifetime guarantee on parts AND fluids. You pay once for it, then when you order again they actually encourage you to send back the used stuff and you get a refund. It is not return fraud or anything like that, they expect you to send it back. They use it for heat in some shops probably local to them. When it comes to the parts you can use and abuse them and they take them back, just ask them. You will not believe your eyes and ears and you will think it is too good to be true!! I am not affiliated with them at all, just sharing what I have found. Even with this quarantine we are all in they are still operating but for now they don't let anyone into their store, it is online only for now.

if you are not confident in using Maxlife, you can go and get Toyota WS transmission fluid from your local dealers at a farily cheap price. Toyota WS is well approved for Aisin 6 speed

Its only a screen not really impotant to change it cant get plugged and if it is your trans is toast anyways. Just a flush three times/6 litre total is fine

How do you drain the torque converter of this car
@MrTheHillfolk
@MrTheHillfolk 4 жыл бұрын
Youre not , unless you remove it. That's why if it's really old fluid ,you should change it again in a few weeks after the first change because a typical pan drop fluid change only gets like half the fluid out. I gotta do this soon, the wife's car has about 60k on it

Can you mix different brands of ATF? I want to do the same, but am not sure what ATF was used by the mechanics before. I have a bottle of approved fluid but am unsure if you can mix it.

Not a flush. You didn't get the fluid out of the torque converter. You're putting new fluid in with old fluid defeating the reason why you did this.

Would you recommend doing this for a 2003 golf tdi with 220000 miles that had never had it done before ? UPDATE: up to 250,000 miles now, seems to have not hurt anything. Probably going to do it again soon.

By 65,000 miles that thing will be having problems if that original fluid is still in it. I am seeing intervals of 50,000 miles but I feel that it is way too long for these transmissions. I would rather do 20,000 to 30,000 considering the valve body issues that some of them have. I have a 2013 Passat and sometimes the valves in that valve body seem to stick a little. I got it with 30,000 miles too. The fluid I drained out was black. It looked like used motor oil with a red tinge. It was also a bit low on fluid seeing as most people drain around 3.5 liters and I got just a little under 2 quarts. It was shifting a bit harsly and didn't feel good shifting out of park. Now that I have drained and filled with 3.5 liters of Aisin WS fluid, it seems so much better now. I will do another drain and fill soon. I just don't like paying the dealer's insane price of $24.80 per liter of fluid. You could go to a Toyota dealer and pickup that fluid for less than $10 per liter and while that is still a little bit high, it is cheaper than the Volskwagen branded fluid. These 09Gs are made by Aisin which is partly owned by Toyota. This makes it seem logical that Aisin or Toyota WS fluid can be used. If yours is older than 2009 it probably takes a different but similar fluid (Toyota Type T-IV or VW G 055 025 a2) The VW fluid is the more expensive one even if your car takes the other spec for the first generation 09G. The G 055 025 a2 is $18.36 per liter and not that much cheaper. The price may have changed by now but I no longer have a car that takes that other spec fluid.
