You made it look easy! This became a 2 weekish job for me when my old one died out. Getting the old bushing out and tapping the new one in took me a few tries. After I got everything back together I learned my battery was dead

@@OlisGarageI appreciate how you're not doing those clickbaity yellow font thumbnails that are so off-putting on KZbin, even when the content is actually fine. But on topic, this video has helped me get prepared to replace the starter on my 228k mile '87 Scirocco. The starter looks like it could be original, so it will be interesting to see how much of that bushing is still even there.

Great video! I wouldn't have thought to replace that brass bushing. The use of the taps as a puller is very smart. The starter in my '84 GLi is original too. I will definitely reference this video when it requires replacement as well! Cheers!

The last time I did a starter I just swapped the starter. But I also swapped a used one (the used one was the one I now got rid of). So I figured if I’m going to spend the money, I’d do it right and replace the busing. It’s super easy. Just a bit tedious

I recently sold my Mk1 Cabriolet (automatic), but did replace the starter motor in it. One big mistake I made was thinking the automatic and manual transmission starters would be compatible. D'oh! Pulled out the old one and only then realized I had the wrong part. It was also a big job to jack the car up and work at it from below, because on the automatic it's located behind and below the engine. Seeing how easy it is to replace it on a manual makes me think those German engineers wanted to "stick it" to the plebian automatic drivers. Good tutorial.
@OlisGarage2 жыл бұрын
Ha, that’s a funny theory. The automatic starters definitely seem to be a pain. I’ve never owned an automatic cabriolet though. Those starters also had hot starting problems, so everyone installs a hot start relay.

Nice video! The my late mk2 16v has 3 bolts that hold it on and 2 of the hold the front motor mount bracket on. So you have to hold the engine up with a jack when you take off the bolts then work the jack up and down till the bolts go back in.

I had no idea they were so different. Glad you got it figured out. Working on cars is one of those things where one never quite knows what will happen. But with experience one knows how to overcome setbacks efficiently. Glad you got it figured out!

@OlisGarage2 жыл бұрын
No worries, motor mounts are on the list. First it’s a coolant leak to fix on the white car. Then maybe front suspension refresh, and then motor mounts on the 84.

@@OlisGarage Can we vote for a timing belt replacement video? I have the parts ordered, just need the confidence to do it myself. Brian's video on his channel turned into 4 parts and scared the heck out of me.

I recently learned that you can use a newer style starter (1999-2005 Jetta/Beetle 4cyl) to replace the MKI/MKII starters without having to replace that bushing. I have a 1990 VW Corrado G60 1.8L with an O2A Manual transmission and I replaced the starter with a newer version (02A-911-023L or 1-17780) and it works a lot better then the old style one.

Yeah it has 10teeth on the 02A right.? Mk1-3 are 9teeth
@061garage6 ай бұрын
I read the mk4 auto TDI starter has 9teeth that could work for the 020 trans cars/mk1-3. Just not sure if it would hit the bushing end ?

Hello great video I was wondering what the starter mount bolts look like because I can find any online to order them
@jamessullivan1648 Жыл бұрын
Nice video. The only one I could find that includes the replacement of the brass bushing. I have a 93 eurovan and it is having trouble starting. It seems like the starte is not engaging with the flywheel. Makes a nasty grind/whirring sound. I bench test the starter and it works fine. My battery has 12.8 v and the flywheel looks good. There is a fair bit of play in the axle on my starter. I haven’t tried to replace the bushing yet. Could that bushing prevent the starter from meshing up?

Hi Oli, weird question and completely off topic. I was driving my 94' mk3 cab a month ago when it suddenly went bang and completely shut off. Since then, i've had it diagnosed with a bad ecu. Having had this replaced, the engine will crank/turn over but wont fire. Each cylinder is getting fuel/spark and air but wont start. I've had a funny feeling it'd be compression but after cranking for a few seconds and turning ignition off, the engine fires twice/three times then stops. Any ideas? I'm genuinely so confused haha

to add to this, its had a new dizzy, new knock sensor, throttle potentiometer checked and working fine. All grounds cleaned (cant find a supposed gearbox one?). Also new plugs and injector cleaner in the tank
