VW Mk6 Jetta gets Bilstein B4 REAR shocks and new Hardware!

Installing Bilstein B4 struts in the rear with new mounts and bump stop on the Mk6! Ran into a few surprises but got it sorted out!
Note- use jackstands! Do as I say, not as I do :)

Impact wasn't cutting it for my axle bolts, had to use a breaker and I thought I was gonna break the breaker at one point, but stuck with it and got it done.

I totally get that. I watch LegitStreetCars in Chicago and the underside of the cars he gets are atrocious! He’s so happy and giddy when he finds a car that “just has surface rust”, lol. I couldn’t do it lol

Great job bro. Rare video that i was looking for before i purchase the b4s. Im changing my ford shocks n struts. I have a question. Does the regular shock mount which i prefer same like yours to also replace to gain the best overall comfort of new shocks fits perfectly with b4s? Or you have to buy the matching b4 mounts? Im going to watch the front install? I drive agressively but safely, however, road condition in our country is poor. I have an ecosport turning 5 year old but all shots now and need replacements. How old is your shock, im just curious?

All my mounts were fine at the time of replacement. BUT because they were already 11 years old, I did not want to just replace the shocks and have to replace the mounts soon later when they fail. I had them out to replace the shocks so I decided it was best to replace ALL at the same time :-). I used the OE mounts. No need to use the B4 mounts. My OE mounts were pretty affordable so no reason to buy anything else. Hope that helps!

Bilstein B4 rear schok are better than the original rear suspension for an Jetta Volkswagen 2016 1.4 TSI MK6?

Absolutely yes! VAG struts/ shocks from what I have experienced with this and other VAG cars I have had is that after 50k-70k miles the struts are no good anymore. These Bilsteins (even these entry-level B4s) are much more durable and perform much better than the VAG equivalent.

Absolutely ! But it also depends on your driving style/ what you want out the suspension. I feel these are perfect OE+ struts to run on the stock springs. This car is a non-modded, wife-driven car. She liked it, and I enjoy them as I don’t mind pushing it around corners. Don’t get me wrong, they are not coilovers lol. But FOR WHAT THEY ARE, they handle noticeably better than the originals when they were new. I feel this is what the stocks ones should have been.

I can't tell you one way or another as I only did the research for the year that applied to me. But I would suggest you read the reviews on these struts on ECS as they often include the year of car they went on, AND check out vwvortex . com forums as that is a well of VW knowledge.

Nice job on the install. I'd however state, the Bilstein B4 is an OEM equivalent replacement, an upgrade would have been the B6.

Agreed. I must say though, I was quite surprised by how they were valved. I expected them to be on par with what I remember the originals being like when new. These were unexpectedly better. I know they specify being “10% stiffer”, but in real world that isn’t noticeable, lol. I thought about doing the B6! But for the very little driving the wife does… the cost difference didn’t make sense for our use (maybe 900mi a year on average lol). NOW I’ll be taking it more though!

@@turbospool yeah, most better quality aftermarket shocks/struts will be valved better than stock. Most regular shocks/struts typically are valved with too much rebound damping and insufficient compression damping, making for a somewhat harsh ride on rough surfaces. A properly valved shock can be firmer with low impact stuff, but absorb harsher bumps better. I went with B6 in my car, I do like the firm ride, deals with potholes very well too.

@@adrianmack3 awesome they must feel amazing if this is how much Im liking my B4s! I had B6s on my 2000 BMW 328i with stock sport springs, and later put them on my 2006 Mazdaspeed6 with Eibach springs. Both times those B6s were just glorious!

I recommend to go to ECSTuning and put in your vehicle information and see what is available. I also listed links to the kit in the description. I believe ECS list all the possible applications for all parts/ kits they sell

You can buy one for passat but be very careful of which version you buy. Even if the site says it fits the car and it actually installs well, doesn't mean it will work right.

The through bolt (that you reused) for that first shock must have been stripped just enough that you had to use washers. The thickness of the shock bottom for the stock and the B4 should be the same.

the bolts were not stripped at all. Very clean actually. I explained that the issue is that the B4 rear shocks are that Bilstein only makes them for the IRS MK6 but that you CAN make them work on solid-beam MK6 by using the sleeve to account for the smaller diameter throw bolt on the solid-beam, and the washers to push it into the proper vertical alignment. Hope that helps!

@@hardcore4476​​⁠no idea. Im not in the forums. I used the washers as an at-that-moment solution to finish the install. A year and a half later (including winter driving) the “solution” is still looking perfect- surprisingly enough lol

no need for a video. For the rears you just have to look under the car and determine if you have a solid beam rear suspension, or independent multilink suspension. Then you order the appropriate shocks. Very easy :)

Perfectly fine! No noises or vibration from there. Last time I looked down there was maybe 2 months ago and all was looking like when I installed it :-)

Haha well it’s either that or send back the set and have to settle for VW rear struts and Bilstein fronts (which I wasn’t going to do…. But I wasn’t happy about having to add washers either!- I left the appropriate review for it on their site).
