Thank you so much for making this video. As you rightly state garages charge a fortune. I was quoted £1300 for the turbo actuator oil etc. The part was £70. My tip as I couldnt get a socket the right length. Use a plumbers sink box spanner and cut it down. Drill a couple of holes for a leverage bar. Cheap as chips. I also bent a cheap spanner into a z and chopped as required. New part had an extra metal housing on the base. Took that off so the part would fit. Assembling it is tricky. Started the actuator nut before fully mounting the part. My hands are too big so stick some string half way round the nut clockwise with gaffer tape. Stick the nut to the finger that can reach the spindle. Locate it,pull the string this should just catch the thread. Rest is easy. The car is 1K in and better than ever. Brilliant thanks so much 👍

I did this myself recently. I think there might have been a slight variation on newer acuators, different material and colour for the seal. I replaced and didnt calibrate with VCDS or mityvac. I used a digital caliper and verified a number of times. Engine did work, no codes seen but I felt boost was not as before so a full calibration was required to get back to required boost levels

@Infiniti259 күн бұрын
@@johnfitzpatrick8055 did you get an answer to your question? From trying to assist the guy who rebuilt my engine, the turbo actuator on my BXE PD105 engine turbo was 93.5mm in length, I don’t remember the stop screw position though. I think it was 3 threads. You used VCDS to graph the specified boost and actual boost to track if they are close to each other and to verify your max boost isn’t dangerously high for your engine/turbo. In software for a stock car mine shows upper limit of 2400mbar in the balloon tip.

Is this the same engine as the skoda Octavia 1.6tdi? Do you recall the engine number? I'm in the same situation where the garage is telling me I need to spend £2,000 on a new turbo when the part is 40 pounds! I don't believe they cannot just change the actuator which I think is the problem as the engine warning I am given is for sensor a which I believe is the sensor on top of the actuator. Any advice would be amazing as I have to get to the bottom of this without being ripped off by some dodgy shark garage!

How did you know before removing that actuator was bad?
@Flash6354 ай бұрын
I have to do the same job on my 2.5 TDi Touareg. I contacted Garrett and they said that you can't buy the actuator separately and if you do manage to find a horrible cheap Chinese copy (Garrett turbos are made in China) then I won't be able to dial it in without a flow bench and nobody has one of those. I knew that couldn't be right because I reinstalled the existing actuator when I rebuilt the CHRA about a year ago. There's plenty of actuators available out there, they just don't label them as R5 but almost all the TDi actuators are the same........

I have same noise 10 years ago and the solenoid work .. but again sticking vanes this is my problem. The lot of city run
@Infiniti2510 күн бұрын
@@angelking07my engine has been rebuilt and we had to rebuild turbo with a new turbo core. Mine had signs of overheating due to low oil. I did have low oil for 3 days before I topped it up. That was about three weeks before my timing belt stretched and frayed, the reason for my rebuild. If you take it apart to clean it thoroughly you will see the vane spigot(?) on top which is rotated back and forth. That comes out with three pins to clean. Then there is a locating screw I think to pull out the part with the actual vanes. Make sure you clean with a wire wheel, then by soaking in thinners overnight and then make sure to pass some thin fine sandpaper between the plate and each cane to clean any remaining soot/carbon. Do this to ensure good clearance between the vane and the plate so there is reduced friction. They will turn nice and freely then. If you dare, the piece with the turbines on, the turbo core, separates (don’t remember how as I didn’t do this bit) to inspect the connecting rod. Any signs of orange or blue on the metal is overheating, any gouges/concentric lines is likely a seal issue allowing debris in which causes scraping. When you rebuild the turbo core, you must prime with engine oil, ensure the seal is good by applying some vacuum pressure with either a large syringe or a handheld pressure gauge and looking for bubbles around the seal. While it’s apart check for any signs that the turbine blade edges are splitting, rough, damaged. Also check the housing for any signs the turbine has been making contact with the inside wall. I believe that is also due to low oil and/or too high boost pressure. If you don’t mind noise, you could have someone bore out the cold side air inlet to funnel it reducing air friction. I’m not sure if that made my engine louder on the motorway or not, but I’m blaming that 😅. My turbo is now properly audible when it spools up and down, it is also working to generate boost. Also don’t mess with the turbo actuator arm length screw and stop screw without taking positional measurements before doing so. This definitely affects the boost pressure available at the low end and your MPG. Also check your work when you put it back on, with a new gasket, to make sure you aren’t dripping oil. To get the turbo off from the top took two of us around 2hours, and I’m not a mechanic. It is fiddly, you may need some variation of tool lengths, you will need to remove the anti-shudder valve, EGR valve and cooler and an LED mirror is definitely very useful. To unbolt the actuator arm, that is done from below with a stubby/short open mouth 10mm spanner, you may have to grind an existing/spare 10mm spanner to do so. I also believe we may have needed the triple square (multi-spline) bitset for some bolts. I got mine from Halfords Advanced tool selection in UK just because it was convenient to buy in store on a Sunday. Some bolts are a pain to get to both removal and definitely reassembly with two flexi-pipes being difficult to locate the first bolt. Take pictures and mental notes of how you take some pieces out. Hope that informs you why people sometimes charge 12-13hours of labour for dealing with a turbo on these engines.

@@angelking07mine is a BXE 105BHP, probably not worth rebuilding. I have had the cylinder head gas flowed, three angle valve seats and polished as well as ported to match the gasket openings. It is lacking some power at low end as a result so I think it’s needing a remap to take advantage of those modifications. Your older engine might be a bit nicer without some of the “green” stuff they add over the years, only problem is probably higher road tax. Mine doesn’t have a DPF filter on a 2010 (that I’m aware of), haven’t seen any lights or anything in VCDS. Good lady’s 2009 A3 BXE 105BHP does have a DPF. Neither of us has Ad-blue thankfully.

Assuming you have a tdi considering that’s what this video is about your issue will probably be the pressure valve sensor if I had my best guess with p2563 p0299 is usually a under boost code that goes to the vane actuator I would replace the boost pressure valve sensor then your maf if one of those two don’t fix then go to the vane actuator it’s usually those 3 or the turbo is blown up not many other causes of failure lol
