As always, we learn so much more from Thomas than going to the dealer for a test drive - many thanks Thomas & Holger. I like the bright coloured interior option. I think even that HUD is a great bonus, especially for the ACC info (and less money than a windscreen projection). Agree, go for DCC, yes! I don't need a big car - I think I'd prefer a full-spec Tiguan SWB: a more compact Passat.

@@autogefuehl I bought my VW Passatt Estate four years ago after watching a couple of your reviews back then. I still have the car and could not have been happier so plan to keep it as long as I can. I bought a new passatt 2.0tdi R-line with a few extra upgrades like the paint and 19" Verona alloys, Pano roof, Digital dash etc. I've had a lot of cars over the years from BMW's, Mercedes, Audi, Rovers going back years, and I have to say the Passatt has to be the most practical all rounder I've ever owned. Thanks to your reviews I was able to really work out what I wanted from a new car.

Nice comprehensive review - again! Unfortunately, it seems VW won't bring the Alltrack variant to the US market. Very very frustrating that our (USA's) over hyped fascination with SUVs/CUVs limits our choices for vehicles that would actually suit driver's needs in a much sportier fashion. PS: Current 2018 Golf Alltrack SE driver here... PPS: I'd trade my Golf Alltrack for this exact Passat Alltrack (2.0l TSI) - same interior, but a blue or silver exterior paint.

David Giles Dude. American here. Nobody is buying the Alltrack here! It just doesn’t sell and the Passat Alltrack wouldn’t sell either. That would be a $50k+ car here. Atlas is the way to go.

David, although they share the same nameplate the American Passat built in Tennessee and the European Passat built in Germany are not the same vehicle. The European Passat is built on the MQB platform; the American version is on its own platform and is larger, cheaper, and less premium. There won't be an American Alltrack Passat. In fact there won't be any wagon versions of the Passat sold in the US.

I have a 2016 on 18 inch wheels in the UK and although it didn't stop me from buying the car I did find the road noise to be higher than expected. Roads in Germany are obviously smoother.

After watching this and other Passat Alltrack reviews, I wonder why people would choose this over the Subaru Outback. Test after test show that the Subaru AWD system gives better stability and better off-road capabilities.

Because apart from that the Passat is so much better insulated from the road. It feels so solid and the materials and built quality is so nice. Also the DSG and turbo engines are so fast.

@@dragospahontu In terms of noise insulation, the Outback easily matches the Alltrack. As for build quality I have to say you’re wrong. Subarus are with good reason well-known for exactly that and for being very durable.

@@peterbredo7019 boxer head gaskets! Volkswagen and german cars in general are nicer to drive and feel expensive. Subaru has cvt transmission not very nice. Maybe only Lexus can match German car brands.

@@dragospahontu I’ve read much about the head gasket problem, but please this was more than 10 years ago and later models aren’t prone to this - not more than even German cars, if they aren’t maintained. Yes, German cars are expensive and rightly so when you consider the marketing expenses they keep. Japanese cars, however, are of better quality when you compare cars within the same segments. German quality and driving experience is to a very high degree created by marketing and not that impressive. The Subaru CVT transmission is different from other car makers CVTs, and is recognised as the best in the market. Whether you like it or not is a matter of taste.

@@peterbredo7019 german design and feeling is very important, I've owned a lot of german cars and all of them have this proper solid feeling. All cars have reliability issues unless they are a Honda or Toyota. But i think the Outback is good but it's not for most people's taste that why the Passat sells well. German car for European people, and Japanese car for American people.

Wow, I can't begin to tell you how badly we need this car in North America. It's big, roomy and can carry a lot of stuff...and it has AWD that comes in handy for more than half of the U.S. and all of Canada for 4-5 months of the year. Beyond that it looks great, better than the Golf All-trac in my opinion. Oh, and since it has a lower center of gravity it should be more satisfying on twisty roads vs high riding SUV's. I really hope wagons come back into fashion so more car makers will offer them. Hopefully the newly released Toyota Crown Signia is a big hit so other carmakers get the message. (I don't care how Toyota markets the thing, it's a WAGON😂)

Like the Golf Mk 7, a few changes, mostly lights, infotainment and tech. The car looks virtually the same. But if it isn't broken why change it, as the saying goes. Glad the front lights have been upgraded, they were too wide before; but the clock should have stayed.

The new Skoda Superb Scout Wagon might be better than Passat Alltrack.. (specially if you miss full wood trims and the retractable center clock personally, i would add in there also an gyroscopic compass +some level bars up-down & side to side, a windshield snorkel +a roof rack with a full LED light-bar and some proper BF Goodrich off-road tires) ;0)

It may be useful to your viewers and potential buyers if you charged up the battery to 100% and see how far it drives in pure electric mode. Many Hybrid models have a totally BS max range rating, as the manufacturers limit it to about 50% usable, for technical and marketing reasons.

Sadly, the combination of Americans' parochial version of what constitutes a "performance" vehicle and VW's malfeasance in the "diesel-gate" scandal, we won't see any version of the European Passat, much less the gorgeous estate vehicles shown in this video. Reasonable people can differ about whether VW has been punished sufficiently for its diesel-gate sins but the bottom line is that the scandal has killed not only diesels from VW in the US but those of other manufacturers as well. And that's not good news. As for the Passat, it's another example of a lesson VW has learned with a variety of its models designed for European conditions and tastes. In general, Americans want larger, cheaper vehicles and care much more about straight line 0-60 performance than high speed driving. Sales of the European Passat languished until a cheaper version (both in price and content) was designed for Americans and built in Tennessee. The Touareg likewise failed to sell in the US and was replaced by the American built Atlas. The first generation Tiguan was universally praised by automotive journalists but viewed as too small and too expensive by US consumers. It has been replaced by a vehicle that shares its nameplate in the US but nothing else. Golf sales have declined to such an extent that VW is considering dropping the base model (leaving only the GTI and Golf R) in the US and emphasizing the Jetta, a model VW has decided to drop in Europe. For Americans who value the driving dynamics of European sedans and estates, it's a sad state of affairs.
