Yeah I'm a 10k mile changer. The quality of full synthetic (specifically Mobil 1 and Castrol) is so good, I have no worries. I understand the caution though. Going from fossil fuel oil 3k changes to full synthetic 10k changes is a big jump for some.
@redonKiLaus6 жыл бұрын
At the 5k interval I run on this VW, the oil is pretty well spent - this is partially due to the nature of turbocharged engines, but also due to the environment the vehicle is operated in (dusty, hot desert). Its weight has sheared down substantially by the 5k interval for my particular use case, which is why I don't run 10k cycles. In a more mild climate, it would work just fine as VW suggests. Thanks for watching!
@speakdino106 жыл бұрын
@@redonKiLaus Interesting. When you say the weight has sheared down, are you saying it isn't reaching the "40" properties at operating temps? Just curious, have you ever had your oil tested? I know the turbo gets hot but I never imagined a turbo-charger, or a turbo-charged engine, would put a considerable difference of stress on engine oil. Next on my list, getting a service kit for my DSG -_-
@redonKiLaus6 жыл бұрын
Exactly. I've run a couple samples through Blackstone. Turbocharged engines are more prone to oil shear as well as contaminating the oil at a faster rate. DSG service oughta be fun!

I guess I should have watched the whole video before commenting! Lol. Wow you have changed the oil a few times. I have not. But I agree with you on the 10k service period. I am at almost 16k now and will be servicing it every 5k now that I see your doing it. I work for a turbocharging engineering company and we see turbos that need refurbishing so I know the importance of frequent oil changes. You just made my decision for me!
@redonKiLaus8 жыл бұрын
Yep, I am definitely a big proponent for far more frequent oil changes - where I live, there is so much dirt my oil comes out surprisingly unclean after 2500 miles in my other vehicles. I've not had any issues with my Passat besides a door handle coming off (wasn't latched from the factory) and the camshaft recall. There are some things that I don't like 100% about it, but I have to remind myself that it's a fairly inexpensive vehicle, and I can't expect Mercedes-level quality. Overall, definitely a vehicle I plan to treat right and keep as long as it returns the favor. Thanks for watching!
@Justacogg2 жыл бұрын
I agree 100%! If you own your car, 10,000 mile oil change intervals are ridiculous! All those people telling you that you can get away with 10,000 mile oil changes are not going to be there for you when your car is burning oil at 80,000 miles! Spending up to 10 K to repair an engine heavily worn from oil negates any money saved on oil changes!

For those of you who poo poo the 10k oil change, have you actually done an oil analysis ever on a 10k sample? I bet not. On my 2005 VW Passat TDI, I have done the 10k change using the spec oil that VW requires for this model and so far so good at 196k. Oil consumption is a half liter at this mileage. In Europe for my model, they do a 20k oil change on the same oil. They roll back the OCI for the Americans. I have another vw in my fleet with the 1.8T TSI and it uses the spec oil and will be going the full 10k. I trust their recommendation, but I will have a sample pulled to verify at some point.

I do maintenance for a living in the high tech industry on tooling. I own a 2016 Jetta SEL 1.8T and have questioned the 10K oil changes for a turbo charged engine. I know it is a full synthetic oil. I personally can't go over 5K between oil changes without feeling I am doing damage to the turbo charger and the engine. The oil is dark at 5K, so my oil changes will be every 5K. Peace of mind in my case.
@redonKiLaus8 жыл бұрын
I definitely agree with you there; on my stock vehicles (my Passat), I'm fine with 5k mile oil changes, but I feel that any longer is asking for increased wear on the engine. For my modified vehicles, I go even shorter - 2.5-3k miles typically, since the engines are often under much greater stress. Thanks for watching!
@johnavelisjr.91788 жыл бұрын
I grew up on the 3K oil change, so I understand why you may FEEL this way. But the facts of a multitude of UOAs (used oil analysis) state that the oil's additives as well as the various products it's carrying are well within tolerances. The motor oils of 2016 are not the motor oils of 1966.

I typically do the same, but in this case I separated those steps to make it more clear for those who are new to changing oil, and also since I did this particular oil change during an Arizona summer when it was 115 degF outside - at that temperature, taking a break in air conditioning while the oil drains is welcome relief. Ed Mathews You are 100% correct in doing it that way. all top side filter housings like the one seen here will hold some oil until you loosen the filter housing cap. this video is of great detail and very informative, only thing I do differently is change the filter first, allowing the used oil inside of the housing to drain down into the pan and then be completely drained when removing the oil pan drain plug! Do you have documentation (at least TBN) from a used oil analysis that substantiates your decision to change oil more frequently than 10K miles?
@redonKiLaus8 жыл бұрын
I've had an oil analysis done on a 5k mile oil change on this vehicle, and while the TBN wasn't too terribly low, the oil was quite dirty and at the point where it was becoming abrasive. This is what I typically see from all of my vehicles in a short period of time because of the dirty (dusty desert) environment in which these vehicles are operated. In my modified vehicles I also see oil shear, even with synthetics, because operating temps get very high here during the summer; I'm can't remember how much of an issue this was on my VW. DO NOT ADD AS MUCH OIL AS INDICATED HERE!! At least if you have a Jetta. Wife's 2015 1.8 TSI only took a tad over 5 litres. 5.8 of them American quarts equates to 6.6L. Do that you'll have a ton of issues. Please ensure you car is level before checking as even a slight incline will affect the dipstick reading. Also, there's no need to remove the plastic from under the car but I suppose the Passats differ. And for those that think they know better than the very smart engineers that designed this ultra modern engine, you don't, rest assured of that. With 200,000km and changes done at 16,000km since new, this vehicle drives like new and does not burn any oil, other the very the very minimal expected amount (for those claiming their vehicles burn a lot, did you follow the proper break-in procedure?). Sure, it's your money and you're free to spend it as you please. But it's our environment, so please don't go wasting oil before the recommended interval for this engine.
