Vw Polo (Blm engine code) - Cam Belt & Tensioner Replacement

Good idea as well to change that serpentine belt tensioner as well, they lead a hard life, and are pretty cheap to buy as pattern part.

Hi Gary, thank you for the detailed video. I have one question. How do I go about to line up the timing marks before I remove the cambelt. Should I remove all or only 1 spark plug? Should I place the spanner on the cam or crank pulley to rotate the engine in order to line up both the top and bottom marks. Thank you.

Hi Rahul, remove all spark plugs to allow the engine to turn easily, and turn the crank pulley clockwise.

Very informative thanks sir. I have a quick question sir. I have the same car but the hatch 1.6 2003 model 9n polo. My spark plugs are getting slightly wet of oil 2nd and 3rd. Whats the best way forward? Do I only do the head cylinder/ valve stem seals and oil rings or should I do the entire Engine overhaul? Thank you.

I had the same problem on my 1400 BLM Polo 2004 on 4th cylinder. Just had the motor reconditioned and in the process found lots of faults that caused it. 2003 model may need full engine overall.

Depending on the mileage and service history, doing the head and rings will usually sort this, but if the mileage is over 250k then best to overhaull.

Most interesting again. At what mileage was the timing belt changed on this car? I see replacing the timing belt on these modern VW's is much more simple than I did on my 24 years old Golf 1.8, where there is an extra toothed pulley on an axle for the iginiton timing which is on the other side of the engine. Your belt is only for valve timing and pretty good acesseable , this makes the whole operation less critical, because you only have two marker points. On my car it is difficult to put the toothed belt back on, and span it, and at the same time keeping the pulleys on the white markers....

Is this an interference or non interference engine? Waterpump broke on my car and timing belt came off

I believe it is an interference engine, but it could depend on the circumstances such as the speed when it happened.
