After 5.5 years the door pin has some play and has lost the firm snapping motion it once had. I have now purchased a pair of replacement springs and have replaced the one on the driver's side. These are a direct replacement that was unavailable when I first undertook this repair. LINK AND SEARCH TERM ADDED TO THE DESCRIPTION.

Very helpful, much appreciated. On reassembly, the connector rod for the inside handle can be reconnected to the lock assembly easily once you realise you can see where it connects through the hole where the outer handle fits.

That is a great observation. I didn't think of that. 👍

Like others with central locking, the extra lever has to be undone from the cl motor below, but otherwise this video literally got my passenger front door fixed in less than 2 hours. Moving the rubber door strip well out of the way helped a lot for removal and refitting of the lock. Thanks for putting the time in to this video!

Great video thanks. Beware; if you have a Caravelle with door speakers there are extra screws behind the speaker that have to be removed before the panel comes off. Also unplug the central locking module.

Hi There, thanks for the video. Made the changing of mine a lot easier with your tips on how to twist the lock to remove it. Also, mine has central locking, so there is a little extra to do. Thanks for uploading! 👌🏻👌🏻

Thank you so so much for this perfect instruction! You've saved hours of my life, even though I found your video unfortunataly after removing the Lock! : ) ... But now I know everything about the position of the Torsion Spring and how to make it. ... Great!

I have been experimenting with different things to make the springs from. I did make some springs out of plastic coated paper clips, just need to purchase a spare lock mechanism to use as a rest rig. I have heard of all sorts being used, some may last longer than others, bearing in mind the original spring material was not very thick but still managed to last the best part of 18 years on the drivers door before failure.

I fixed mine today, thanks! For cars with central locking the cl motor from below needs to be disconnected, unscrewed and tilted to get the hook off. Also the lever from the door handle should be removed prior to removing the lock, the plastic part broke for me..

You just saved my bacon, my friend! :)) I just have a same problem on my T4, time to search some drawers for old keyrings and fix that thing :)
@T4TipsGuides6 жыл бұрын
Good to hear, I have been trying out different things for this recently, I did make a spring out of a plastic coated metal paper clip, was much easier to recreate the original spring. I might make a video of that if I get the time.
@bbszabi6 жыл бұрын
The good thing is, that you showed the idea and the process, that's what matters. I ended up making it from an actual spring from my 'everything that might be be reused later' box :)

Fantastic work, and my drivers door now works like the day it was made. Making the spring was painful & wondered if replacements were available?
@T4TipsGuides6 жыл бұрын
Hi Colin, there was a guy in Germany selling the springs, I think it was around £11 all in for a single spring and postage. I did get a quote from a UK spring manufacturer. As the springs are sided you would need to buy around 5000 for each side to make it worth setting the machines up, in the end I just didn't have the time to get around to it.

Thankss a lot, everything fixed. But i have kind of a problem, not really a problem but the lock dont work like is suppose to do. Now, i can only lock the door by pushing down the locker ( black plastic thing) when the door is closed. When its open its impossible to move it. So i have to lock the door with the Key from the outside or by the passanger seat. I dont know if mabye i've put the spring in a wrong way ir if i do something wrong
@T4TipsGuides4 жыл бұрын
I think that is how it should be, you should not be able to push the locking pin down when the door is open as this would allow you to lock the door with the keys inside (some vehicles you can do that, and those owners are the ones who manage to lock their keys inside their vehicle). Are you saying you were able to push the locking pin down with the door open before you disassembled the lock?
@J0nge4 жыл бұрын
Perfect video, I have the exact same problem. Will try your solution asap :) Maybe you could help me with another problem? The lock of my sliding door suddenly kind of stopped working. I can't open or lock the door with the key any longer. I can slightly turn the key forcefully but nothing happens (onyl that I get afraid to break the key). If I pull the pin up from the inside I can still unlock the door but it takes alot of power. Seems like something in the lock is stuck/broken/unhooked/??? Do you have an idea how to solve this?

Nice one....Just fixed, thought that lock was gonna be way more problematic, pretty fiddly mind but only some minor swearing, not too bad :)

Should have watched this /before/ disassembling! Mine did the same: Snapped one of the four clips in the white bushing for the door handle rod. The rod should be removed BEFORE the lock is taken out. And when mounting: Mount the white bushing (observe the slot i in the right direction) and push the rod into this. The rod locks the bushing and is (at least in my experience) near impossible to mount if the bushing is on the rod (and not in the hole in the lock mechanism)... I'm still searching for a hint on what should hold the plastic cover (and guide for the locking knob) in place. Mine is all over the place now and very difficult to "catch" with the knob... But I don't see any features to fix it in the door structure? PS: I had a standard coil spring in the aproximate right diameter and material. I could bend the two "levers" out of that...

Great video thanks. Just doing mine (was until it started raining) I'm having trouble trying to get the door open rod back into the mechanism. Do you put the plastic grommets in the mechanism hole , fit the mechanism & then push the rod in ? Or leave the grommet on the end of rod & push into hole. ? Thanks
@T4TipsGuides4 жыл бұрын
If you watch the video from 11:00 I explain how to refit the connecting rod. The mechanism is fitted first without the rod connected, I think the plastic grommet is already in place. Once the mechanism is fitted the connecting rod is pushed into the grommet. At least I think that was how I did it, it was over 3 years ago now. As I recall you will have to do it by feel as you will not be able to see the hole once the mechanism is fitted.

@T4TipsGuides5 жыл бұрын
A couple of hours should be long enough. Best to just take your time. Some of the clips that hold the rods for the door lock mechanism will be brittle and can easily break during the strip down process, cheap enough to replace if they do break so not the end of the world. You can see in the video at 11:16 that one of the clips broke, it was replaced later as I did not have the parts to hand. Maybe a good idea to buy a bag of clips before starting the job. A bag of 10 clips is less than £3.00 with free postage. rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F192084091463
