Fabricating Custom Baja Side Nerf Bars - Sickxty VW Beetle Volksrod Baja Franken Build - 65

Today's video we are fabricating custom nerf side bars for the Sickxty. This basic design can be used on any baja, volksrod or any other light off road Volkswagen. I used 3/4' EMT conduit, a conduit bender, welder, grinder and some 18 gauge sheet metal for the top. We hit it with some self etching primer than laid down the black raptor truck bed liner.

Brilliant results. I like dimples like the old Hot Rodders liked Louvers. I bought my nerf bars years ago and the front stops just past the midway point of the door. It's great for stepping out of a lifted car but worthless for deflecting stones. Not a bit of paint left on them. I might try the bedliner trick and a slip on cover of some sort for off pavement adventures. My 66 has aluminum running boards like stock. Makes it easy for the dog to get in and out but I'm always hitting the calf of my leg when getting out. OH Well!!! Can't have everything. Wish the Baja nerfs were Stainless steel

Thank you sir. They pretty much turned out like I had hoped for. Since the front beam is pushed forward I didn’t want to use the typical nerf bars and I figured carrying them further forward would look better. However it is a slight pain to get in and out, the look is worth it lol It’s not that inconvenient really, I’ve dealt with worse. Gotta find the balance of it all, everything has pros and cons.

Fantastic I'm jealous. Love a dimpledie. I maybe way off but I had film and photo issues similar (random corrupting) but on my phone. Found it to be the sd card (not known brand off the jungle site). Gary! You gotta get Levi set up as your shooter with the DSLR! You could totally do "Show Style" content with him shooting, and that would free up both of your hands for working. I would love to get there myself, but I am solo filming just like you(and I have had lots of problems with Go Pro as well). At the very least, maybe swap to DSLR/Mirrorless for yourself so you stop losing video! As always awesome progress even if you weren't able to capture it all. I look forward to seeing what you do for front and rear bumpers.

That’s another reason for these videos, hopefully inspire someone…. Please use whatever you see on your build! I did clean the galvanizing off before welding, cleaned everything with a wax and grease remover, shot with self etching primer, then final finish of your choosing

Project turned out really nice. But the only question I have for you is do you think the electrical conduit will be strong enough to take an impact I probably would’ve went with some type of steel tubing instead of that flimsy electrical conduit.

Thanks. Well, I imagine the conduit probably won’t hood up to acting like “rock sliders” and the ones you buy won’t either. If anything the ones I built have stronger bracing vs the ones you buy. Im not planning on thrashing this off road so they should hold up for what I want to do. If not, they’re easy enough to remake.

Thanks buddy, I have to agree with you. I’m super pleased how these turned out. The camera issues are getting very old. Using a GoPro hero 7. It’s now completely dead and my other one is on its way out as well. Such is life.

@VWJawbreaker damn that sucks they ain't cheap. I found with my gopros using cheaper SD cards i would find corrupted files so name brand SD cards fixed my issues

@@V8N8T I’ve never had an issue with them before and run brand cards. Tried reformatting the cards, different cards, resetting the camera, firmware updates, etc. It either shuts down, gets extremely hot, corrupts the file or has error messages. Now it just doesn’t turn on at all. They had a good run I guess lol

@@peterbainbridge51 yeah the later years you can buy black aftermarket handles but the earlier ones only come in chrome. Mine have been painted for just over a year now and it’s starting to wear off on the driver door.
