excellent decision by the referee to stop the fight. The American didn't even know where he was anymore...Continuing the fight would have brought nothing more. Thanks for posting that !

This guy is absolutely awesome...And it ain't the American...If the Russian guy was born in the West he definitely would be a legend ...What an absolute legend...His right was surely one of the best ever ..

This is interesting. MAYBE he wouldn’t have the same success. Power and athletic talent are independent from styles, but I imagine he’d fight in a completely different way than here.

the talent boxer Lemeshev can dance in ring , but defeat by alchohol , so i think he will not be the best in west, in professional box, that huge money women will destroy him

Don't know if his amateur style would translate well to the pros and 15 rounds.

Marvin Johnson was still in development at this time. He was overmatched as the Soviet (Russian) was at least one weight class bigger than Johnson. Olympics at that time was skewed against Americans as the Europeans, Asians and Communist bloc were resentful but the only way they could stick it to us was in symbolic ways like in international sports. See the 1972 Olympic basketball gold medal game that was stolen from the USA and given to the USSR.

Your first point is categorically wrong - Johnson won the national title at light-heavyweight (the weight class above) the previous year. Lemeshev was absolutely not ‘at least one weight class bigger.’ Johnson was young and developing, but still a very capable boxer. Size wasn’t the issue here though, Lemeshev was just *very* good.

It was not stolen at all. Everything was according to rules, according to International Federation of Basketbal. And it was not the last game when Russian team won Americans. And Russian team led entire game, it played better. Europeans and Asians served to USA in 60s and 70s and still. Alexander Belov made huge and silly mistake 8 seconds before before the end. Only because of that mistake Americans manages to get 1 point more than Russian team 3 seconds before the end. It was first time they led in the game. Americans always find excuses to their defeat. And this box match also shows total superiority of Russian athlete. So, continue your tales.
