I would have killed to have stuff like this when I was in highschool and was basically not learning things I needed to because my highschool art teacher was an abstract painter and shit at drawing, it really killed my progress over the course of highschool and turned me off to going to art school, and I got a computer science degree instead. It's nuts how much I improved even in my 30's, getting back into drawing simply due to youtube videos. Seriously, my HS art teacher was like anti illustration. We sculpted, painted all sorts of shit but no sketching/illustration.

Andrew Loomis the great illustrator (you should check out his books), has talked about this. Its called rhythm lines. You can't specifically 'teach' it, it develops with practice. He mentions moving your pencil across the paper without moving your wrist, to develop that sense of rhythm.

Just think and familiarize things like simple objects. With regards to human body, just familiarize it and develop geometry in your mind as your guide. Once you have it, it's easy to play those line and shapes and put some detail. I am no expert, just an experience. :)

A trick I did early on to help me out was to literally draw a faint, miniature little light bulb wherever I wanted to depict my light source coming from. It's great for consistency and you don't have to imagine what the cast shadows might be as much. At the end, of course, you can go back and erase it. Again, it's a great little tip for beginners to help maintain consistency with their light sources.

his sketches look better than your finished drawings because he knows his proportions anatomy and structure, and that's one of the most important aspects of a good drawing.
