It's the bluntness that gets me. To simply state "Tallis is dead" rather than "enshrined within the raptures" or something makes you realise that Byrd, as makes sense, was probably completely beside himself. Amazing performance.

I was so sad when I heard, " Tallis is dead, Tallis is dead, and music dies. Beautiful song.

I have searched far and wide for this, my favourite of William Byrd's compositions. To hear it performed by such a gifted tenor is a rare treat.

This is using my edition of William Lawes, Collected Vocal Music. 4 vols [AR Editions. 2002]. It was first used (before publication) in the BBC film, William Lawes: Musick Maverick.

This is a beautifully restrained and melancholy rendition of this gorgeously sad composition of William Byrd. I've been looking so long for a fine performance and this is it. Thanks so much for posting.

I sang with Robin in the Boston Early Music Festival's production of King Arthur. I was the "not-as-good" countertenor. He was a swell guy, and a beautiful instrument.

Ich habe selten eine so stimmige und ergreifende Interpretation hievon gehört! Toller Counter (unerhört gut) und fast perfekte Gamben. Danke für dieses Kleinod!

Although writing a song about the death of "the music" might be *technically* ironic, I don't think there is necessarily any intention to be funny, or to imply a double meaning. No more than Don McLean's "Bye Bye Miss American Pie" ("the day the music died").
