Did you watch Begin Again in which Gong Jun looked equally handsome and dashing playing a doctor in a modern drama? He was described by fans as an ideal husband for that role which is said to be the closest to his real-life personality. I don't think his upcoming roles in The Flaming Heart and Sleeping Garden can top that, so might as well watch Begin Again.

Gl if you decide to watch it for the actor, just keep expectations low so it doesn't ruin your impression of him. Like just wanting to hate the FL, only liking helpless girl drama, etc. Like wth lol honestly I only started watching it because I was waiting for the WOH's esp. And as someone who don't really follow the FL or her dramas, I was going by the first 5 esp that I was watching. Still not sure how not liking her acting meant I hated her, or how I only watch romance drama. But wow, I can definitely see how random people on the internet can start accusing you of anything just because of one opinion that they don't agree with.

@@darvidkoh2707 yes I watched it before WOH. Gong Jun did make impression at the later part of the show. He was so passive or the script made him show in the beginning of the drama. I remembered seeing him having the emotional breakdown when his wife left! I was quite impressed to see a handsome actor who can act. Yet, in WOH, he glows with his acting and now here I am a big fan of him. Wishing this handsome yet silly boy Gong Jun not to drip/fall as many eyes or troubles comes along when he is in the spotlight. Pray for this boy to succeed!

Love the scenic sets, loved the leads, and love the male supporting character. I 100% agree the director didn't need to be there so often, especially since we don't really get an explanation of his character. His scenes with the female antagonist were so boring and added nothing to the drama that I just skipped all their scenes.

Me personally wouldn't say this was Binbin's best role but still he pulls off very character given to him amazingly. He is a step above other cdrama actors that I like to call "miming actors" lol, lots of over exaggerated facial expressions and body language, he acts with the little details even down to his eyes, I'm always amazed by him 👍 Also my personal favourite role of his is The King's Woman. Literal *shivers* 😅 He captured the perfect balance of drawing you in but also making you realize how psycho the emperor really was 😨

So scary, and his softness makes him even more scary in that role. It's such a realistic portrait of someone so fully on the dark triad.

I started watching Rattan when WOH was out and focused on it. I really enjoyed the first probably half of the drama and the second half lost the momentum. The male lead is very easy on the eye so it kept me coming back. I will say the scenery and the locations for Rattan were breathtaking and made me want to travel to that region. Then I started watching WOH and that had my attention. The subtitles have been a bit slow on Viki but now I can finally watch the last 4 episodes. I had to pause your WOH videos because I didn’t want to be spoiled. I can see why you enjoyed WOH! I will catch up on the WOH finale livestreams afterwards. I’ve seen the main leads from WOH in other dramas. I think WOH has been their best work to date

I loveeeeeeee loveeee Rattan. I didn’t watch it when it first aired, and honestly I didn’t know how I started watching it and how I got so hooked but somehow I did and I’m so glad I started it. I love the chemistry between the couple! I’m so glad JingTian gets the love from this since I adore her, I think she’s such a sweetheart. As for the drama, I agree with all the good points you said about this, and I agree with some of the negative points. But I will definitely rewatch this and ship the couple so hard haha. I was so surprised that you reviewed it!

I only started watching this drama for the nature shots and kept watching because Jing Tian is so impressive; no real feelings were involved while watching it. Thank you for explaining the mystery of Zhang BinBin, he is indeed good in this drama for his own level.

Appreciate your comments always. Loved 'Rattan' I think partly because the relationships evolved; the scenery was amazing!! Ms Jing Tian was so beautiful and I loved her clothes and the events that unfolded over several life times. I have seen Zhang Bin Bin in several dramas where I enjoyed his work but this is my favourite. As for the end, there are many old tales over here of which I am fond that end up with the true lovers turning into trees and intertwining and never being parted so I think it spoke to my ancient self and I loved it.

I don’t usually comment although I really enjoy your reviews. Even more fun is that we almost always agree. I really enjoyed Rattan, maybe even more than Word of Honour. Sacrilege, I know. I enjoyed the leads very much and like you I agree the second supporting lead is incredible. And the scenic beauty is amazing! I enjoyed the fantasy aspects too...in some ways it is almost a continuation of the fantasy world of Guardian! I hope the international audience finds this gem and it gets the following it deserves. I do love your reviews! Rarely do we disagree so I will watch dramas that I may not have thought I would like just because you recommend them! I actually like the director's acting, but in the end, I was left wondering why his character existed. He could have had a more prominent role in how things played out. But, who the hell was he? Was he a bird that had lived in the tree and was also transformed into a human and therefore, had witnessed their story and was now telling it? That's the only meaningful storytelling reason to have him there. But, he didn't make it clear why his character existed and who exactly he was, at all. Is there more coming?

The fl looked so stunning. I loved her style and their chemistry. Not gonna lie I did skip a few parts in between. And I had no idea it was a low budget production. I thought they were loaded mainly because of the background and fl’s clothes.

My favorite elements of this drama was that it was visually very beautiful, every frame looked like a beautiful painting...and the styling as you mentioned. The storyline deteriorated as time went on and I pretty much lost interest midway (and yes, the presence of the director definitely stuck out like a sore thumb) and glad it was only 30 episodes. On another note, I’ve surprisingly thoroughly enjoying The Long Ballad and would love to hear your final thoughts on it 😊

Very good review, thank you. You pinpointed the exact moment where I thought the show started to drag and move around in circles. As I have found of late with many cdramas or kdramas, a shorter season with a tighter script would've benefited the show quite a bit. I didn't know it had a low budget but I guessed it from its repetitive use of sets/locations. I don't mind because that should (hopefully) put more pressure on the writers to turn out a good script rather than distract you with fancy VFX or beautiful locations. 'Word of Honor' has been recommended to me before so I'll give it a watch and then check your review.

The ending confused me. I was not aware ep 31 was an extra ep with two different endings. I agree with your assessment of this drama. The scenery was beautiful, her wardrobe was stunning, and this was his best drama. I like Vin Zhang, I've seen him in other stories, and I liked the level of love and emotions he displayed in this one. Thanks for posting this review, now I'm less annoyed by the ending.

I really enjoyed this, maybe less towards the end but overall it was an enjoyable drama. ZBB is one of my faves , it was nice watching him back to back from Storm Eye. I'm happy that he got to shine. Hopefully I won't wait long for his next.

I really loved this drama. The alien/mortal love theme is great. Then the human turns out to be part alien, too. That was interesting. The anciently arrived alien theme was there in Guardian, too. This idea of the alien species having been on earth for ages, but hidden but passing and for human. It's so different from western themes about aliens.

Thank you for the review! Multiple endings are definitely a thing now, being a new "interactive" feature of the cultural experience ; I've seen it in some book projects as well. It is a bit jarring, as the viewer learns to mistrust the choice made by the director and wait for an "alternative" conclusion of the story. IMO, it it still better than having fake "happy endings" when the positive conclusion makes no sense in relation to the plot. Otherwise, I agree with you on all the points, Vin Zhang did very well and the styling of the drama was very unusual, showcasing fresh views, locations and clothing. The folksy village people were very cute.

I know it’s probably the right time for the two actors to “de-couple” and move on to other things (the hug and the well-wishing from the two of them to each other at the end of the second concert probably symbolise it) and they probably will stop participating in the same variety shows together or mentioning each other when alone. I don’t even ship actors, only their characters. Still, I feel like this spring is somehow over and all I’m left with is a lot of beautiful but increasingly distant memories...

Agree with your review 100% all the good and bad. I was so addicted to the drama the first 2/3 (around the part where mushroom dies too) and then it went downhill and draggy. Haven't watched WOH because I was watching Ultimate note when it came out and I had been waiting for Rattan for some time so I immediately jumped onto that wagon when it was around 15 eps so I had a lot of spare feeling to dump onto the drama lol. I can see how draining it is to be hooked onto a drama and not want to part with it. Withdrawal is not a joke lol! It's totally possible to be so drained emotionally from a drama that you have no leftover to give to something else, like having a hubby you love with all your heart and then a hot guy appears and you don't get what all the fuss is about XD. I haven't shipped a BG (some people call Rattan GB lol) couple so hard in years lol. And it's so true that this is both leads' breakout role and it came out of nowhere. Lol what you mentioned about the director was so true. I kept thinking he was like some hidden card or something and the character totally underwhelmed. Didn't like Bai Ying either, she was so over the top. I kind of wondered if Jing Tian could've shouldered 2 roles. I think she did well the couple times she did play Bai Ying. I agree, so many BG dramas just don't have their shit together and Rattan shined because of the comparison. 1.5 is very fair because it does have a lot of flaws but it does give a very deserved watch and doesn't molest the viewer with tired and stupid tropes. Shier Tan (don't know what the English name is) got roasted pretty bad so I definitely avoiding that landmine. No comparison no shade!! Actually no, shit will smell no matter what it's compared to. Some dramas don't care and don't even try and viewers can feel it. I feel so sorry for JBB company's actors too. About time JBB got popular. I ship this couple so bad!! Their behind the scene interactions are so flipped (character vs actor personalities) and sweet lol and can tell these two are very natural and easy around each other so their chemistry is buyable. The supporting cast, especially the little boy and his Shifu are strong. I legit cried when Mushroom kidnapped the little boy and Yan Fu Rei was all worried. That part fleshed out the relationship between the cast really well. Shows how strong chemistry and good writing between nonromantic characters can also have strong reactions from audience so really, producers can stop selling the artificial sugar. Sometimes I hate it there's so many mary sue female leads where all males are romantic towards her for no reason. I think that's why Rattan is so special, because she's Big Female Lead but not Mary Sue. I hate how that's not the norm in Chinese dramaland. Also JBB is a different take on rich boss trope. The ending, I was so confused by the two. Didn't watch WOH and really not sure what to think about alternate endings. I do like the other happy ending though. The part with the little girl was kind of cringe, but funny and sweet at the same time. Can't help it, I was 100% hooked on this CP. I'll end my rant here lol. Felt like I rambled way too long XD.

I'm happy this seems like a good role for Zhang Bin Bin. He was a total scene stealer in LoveO2O, and I haven't liked many of his parts since- although enjoyed - but never finished- I Will Never Let You Go. I was excited to see him in a new drama. I remember when I watched The Sleepless Princess, which I thought was fun, but hated the ending, I didn't realize they made another- "extra" ending that had more scenes. Seems like a more popular option. But confusing!

watched mostly raw until 24-25 and jumped to 30. I haven’t seen the extra episode. I skipped bec I could see the drama going downhill. And it was tough with waiting for eng subs. I followed well till 🍄 died. I agree, the settings were a big part of the attraction with truly wonderful scenery and sets you don’t often see. Even the houses they chose were unique and helped set the mood. Si teng’s styling were spot on, except for that one black dress with beige ruffles all over. Lol. Though I still wonder where they stored all those boots and big coats for both of them when they only had that one luggage for each. It’s a pet peeve of mine.. I wondered if the character played by the director served any special purpose but it didn’t seem so when I skipped to the end. Didn’t know he was the director, explains much I guess lol. I asked abt he dubbing for JT when ZBB and others were not, in the soompi thread and someone answered it was bec the director or production thought her voice was too sweet. I saw a BTS and thought she sounded quite similar to the voice they used, but what do I know? I definitely agree that the supporting actor was the best in acting and really kinda stole the show sometimes. I thought he was the heart of the story and helped keep me watching. I do think the leads had good chemistry together. She played a magical being who is kinda removed from human emotions, cold but not heartless, quite well. And he did his part in the normal guy caught up in these things but does his best to cope. He played it in a way that grounded her and the story. He just seemed very dependable and capable. Though he could have freaked out a bit more. He seemed almost too calm in the beginning. But that’s not entirely on the actor. I agree that having multiple endings is a cheat. They should decide how the story ends and stick to it and let viewers take it or leave it. One can’t please everybody and if you try, you won’t succeed anyway. At least if you stick to one, you fulfill your own artistic vision. I was ok with them going back to the forest. though I did wonder abt her adoptive parents who it seems she just abandoned? Lol This and WOH led me to Legend of Ban Shu that has JT and ZZH. ..making my way through it and just got past halfway and my pace has slowed...it’s from 2015 and I think ZZH has improved in his acting since then. I thought she was ok. It was definitely a very different character to SiTeng.

I am not into the actings of both leads. They both are very good looking, but somehow feel so (over)acted in their roles. I watched some previews and got no urge to start it, but will keep this drama on pending list based on your good words.

I started watching Rattan before WOH untill episode 20. And my impressions about this drama is about the same as yours. I could not get emotionally invested in the couple or story. It was ok but I'm not impress. So I stopped and start watching WOH. After first episode, I felt the difference in interests.

Okay I like totally agree with your review, but I did give it a 9.5 on MDL mostly because nothing else catches my attention 🤣 I was bored at the beginning but they actually won afterwards. But other than that I was kinda of disappointed with the story itself though. And I have too say that just like you I was quite not as invested in the romance and main I was just confused about the second ending.

I really liked this drama, but do agree that the middle part was bit too slow. Also, I skipped the Director ending and went directly to the extra HE. I know alot of people commented that the Director added too much lines for himself, funny enough, I actually like him alot but I guess I had bigger hope for his "True Identity". WIth all the added lines and the way he played it, I was guessing that he would be one of the biggest antagonist or a really plot twisting person that serves a bigger purpose, but...The other thing i like a lot is even the 2 leads had misunderstandings, but it didn't take FOREVER to resolve that, also, both of them are NOT "in love" every single minutes!!!!!...

I'm totally on the top of the mountain as well. Can't go down, don't want to go down! Got the subscription to watch the last episode early and to watch the concerts. Hurray for slow burns! Multiple endings are weird. I agree for censorships but not if it's just for audience happiness it doesn't make the production their very own 'work'. Kind of like for the mountain extra, I'm conflicted because I don't know which is real.

The special episode is the real HE. Even the trailer for the concert has their voice actors saying that they have been living on the mountains for a long time eating ice and drinking icy water. They had to cut it out from episode 36 due to censorship.

Glad they found a way around censorship, that makes me so happy to know that was the intended ending because the real ending was so abrupt and weird. I would've been so sad if the intention was a BE and the extra was fan service vs what they did. 🤗

@@dorapoch Yes, sadly I think it’s only for BL dramas. The censorship only allows them to have OE/BE, not HE. That’s why they had to film a couple of endings just in case. I’m thankful for the WOH team for working so hard to give us the HE when they could’ve just ended at episode 36 like the way it was. Yes, I totally understand you because I feel the same way, too. But the HE is confirmed as canon already with the concert theme and trailer.

I started on this drama first and heard about WOH late. The story started to drag when the second half of her appeared when I got news of WOH and started on the other drama. I never did return to finish Rattan cuz I'm still on the mountain with WOH reactors and fanmade fiction on WOH.

Having loved ZBB in other performances, I was really looking forward to Rattan. But "not emotionally involved" sums up my experience here. I watched three episodes and "dropped in" on a few other episodes, but was actually repelled by the plot and the female role. Not even ZBB could keep me involved in this turkey. I hope his next role is one that I will enjoy watching.

Because last year's "General's Lady" and "Maiden Holmes" are dramas that I'm really curious to know your opinion on since I felt like they were very different from the usual dragging the misunderstandings one. I really enjoyed the first two thirds of Rattan and then the last 10 were just a mess. The Cinematography is beautiful, costume design is fantastic and I loved the soundtrack but I wish the show had focused more on the couple. In the latter half they are apart so much. The ending was disappointing and I chose not to watch the bonus episode cuz I was so frustrated by how it ended. Thanks for this review. You did a great job articulating some of my issues

Bonus episodes just turn me off since it seems like fan service rather then ending a show how the writer/director originally envisioned it. I hope this doesn't become a trend w/ cdramas
