For most of these Chinese plot and scriptwriters and directors it's all about the bottom line. They live in a drama bubble. With a low budget, they're not producing some work of art, they're happy with mediocre that will pass censorship. Churn it out, by the dozen and flood the market with nonsense. Bad publicity is still publicity.

I just happened to watch yesterday the episode with the female lead falling from the building in I Am the Years You Are the Stars. I had a laugh but thought it was also very weird with the head sticking above the building while holding onto the ledge. Having watched so many stupid/illogical things in Chinese dramas, my tolerance for such foolishness has become very high. The ones going overboard I quit watching or I skip to the end to watch the ending. I've watched contemporary dramas lately and normal (office) people apparently earns so much money they can spend on high end clothes and accessories.

Any drama, costume, historical or modern, that starts off as female lead "disguising" herself as male always strikes me as ridiculous. Especially as there are obviously boobs on "him". No facial hair for shaving. The voice is feminine. Are men really that dumb that short hair (and often glasses) would indicate "plain male"? Or are there so many males who look girly that it's hard for guys to tell? The only series which came even close to being believable (mostly because of the actress) was "Oh My General" which isn't from 2021 of course. She projected a male energy, and the lead male projected a female energy and I thought it was a very clever tongue in cheek series that I enjoyed and it was relatively believable that she could have been thought a male, full kitted out in armour. As soon as the storyline goes "female pretending to be male" I've pretty much lost interest, particularly when the male lead is supposed to be leagues ahead of her in intelligence. Uh huh.

@maryannrondinella56803 жыл бұрын
Great rant video. But even prestige C dramas have absurd tropes. For example, in "The Last Goodbye to Mama," the male lead, a university student who isn't idol-gorgeous, gets conned into a fake modeling contract. He goes on a job to Tokyo, a city of 15 plus million people, and runs into his mother's Japanese former co-worker and boyfriend in a tiny neighborhood cafe. They haven't seen each other in 15 years, don't recognize each other, but the older man treats him kindly. The "chance encounters" in huge cities is a ridiculous plot device, but especially egregious in an otherwise quality show.
@Kayenne543 жыл бұрын
Real life is actually more absurd. I recall these people telling me they travelled from Australia to New York (many years ago now) and as they were waiting on the platform to take a train, they saw their NEIGHBOURS from home (who lived a little way down the street) standing right next to them. Amazed greetings were exchanged, they took their train and didn't see neighbours again until their trip finished. So it is entirely possible, but in the real life story, nothing else happened. It was just weird and bizarre and that was it. I was travelling with a friend, our vehicle broke down on the side of the highway hundreds of miles from our starting point, and while waiting for road side assistance, at least 3 different car loads of people went past whom either my companion or I knew. Just acquaintances, who made sure we were okay, but I'll never forget how weird it was. I didn't come from a huge city, but you can bet it was all around town what happened to me before I even got back home. I've even had a few people say they were hitch hiking around Europe or India and met people they knew from back home. Real life is stranger than fiction.
@maryannrondinella56803 жыл бұрын
Having visited Tokyo twice as an adult, I can attest the tiny neighborhood restaurants on narrow side streets are not frequented by foreigners. (They are also disappearing due to high rents.) That a Chinese visitor could stumble into one of these joints and run into his mom's old boyfriend who happens to speak a little fractured Mandarin isn't likely. Maybe a busy Ginza night club or the now ubiquitous coffee shops popular with foreigners...And this unlikely encounter did nothing to advance the plot.
@mykrt85413 жыл бұрын
@@Kayenne54 all these happened in my summer trip long ago: when touring Japan in my 20s, ran into someone who was a cousin of an elementary school classmate from across the ocean; checking out a shoe store in Hong Kong and another former elementary school classmate was shopping in the same store.
