W123 Bad diesel turns on fuel warning triangle

I inadvertently filled up with some contaminated diesel the other day.
I had to drive the car home, and during the 15-20 minute drive, the car began losing power and sounding louder and more pronounced diesel clatter.
After arriving home, the car had a significant shake and misfire.
I was worried I had just destroyed the injector pump I had just replaced, or worse.

I've had problems often with a variety of stations near me, I try my best to stick to the ones I know are good, but now and then in a pinch I have to fuel up out of my area or at an unfamiliar station and it seems like it bites me nearly every time.

Nice information. I would have drain the tank and fuel gauge sending unit also.

I probably should have, at the very least to inspect it or filter it and put it back. But after cleaning the filters, and treating the tank it drove well for the remainder of the tank, and has fresh diesel from a known good station now. I will be pulling the sending unit, I'm thinking I need to replace the resistance wires entirely, I cleaned them once but its acting up again.

Thanks for the tips. I will use the mesh filter that they offer. That way I can repeatedly clean it as required.

It'll catch a lot of junk, and does a good job of catching water, I don't think a drop made it into the secondary filter, just some gunk and algae. I have a goldenrod filter like that on both of my diesel trucks as well, and it catches so much garbage you wouldn't believe it.

Thanks for this video that also answered my burning question as to how you modified the fuel filtration system to include the golden rod fuel filter and its efficacy. I'm definitely going to plumb one into my fuel line.

Do keep in mind the way I've done it you shouldn't use the paper filter that comes with the goldenrod housings, either switch to the mesh style filter they offer, or just use it like a giant sediment bowl like I do :)

Something I think you should research: a Ford HFCM. I recently installed one on my W123 300d and it's made a big difference in filtration and keeping the injection pump pressurized. It's a fuel pump with a 10 micron cartridge filter and water separator in it, and it constantly circulates diesel from the the tank, through the 10 micron filter, and to the secondary filter, then returns back to the tank. I've had no issues for the past 500 miles, and it's made a huge difference in how easy it is to bleed the whole system. Turn the key on, and it takes about 20 seconds for the whole system to fill back up with diesel. It can circulate the entire fuel tank in about 2 hours of operation, "polishing" the fuel. You should be able to wire the WIF sensor in the pump to an empty port in the instrument cluster, which I've been meaning to do. It's a good pair with the same 2 micron baldwin filter you use, and I expect the pump will elongate the life expectancy of it. I made a little bracket and installed it on the drivers side fender area. Found mine on ebay, but I hear they're a dime a dozen at junkyards

I'm quite surprised at the engineering behind it, and again highly recommend you look into it. Something the video doesn't explain though: Ford ditched the fuel heater/recirculator as it was unnecessary and led to potential issues. Mine doesn't have one. It won't fix your areas crappy diesel though lol

Alright, I'm gonna pick one of these up to play with, The cost of replacement filters for it does worry me with how terrible the fuel seems to be in my locale, but I could perhaps put the goldenrod mesh filter before the HFCM to catch any big debris. Thanks for the info, its really cool to find out about stuff like this that can be used for different applications!

I did not this time around. The last time I got a tank of water from a different station I called them, and the parent company, they said they sent someone to inspect and their fuel was a-ok, no water at all. I made it less than 5 miles and had about 15 gallons of water in the tank. Their answer is it must have been in there before I fuelled up... I need to make friends with a good attorney lol

I can't believe there aren't some kind of filters or anything on the pumps. I usually fill up at a handful of stations that I know has good fuel, but now and then I'm in a bind and need to fill up at one of the others and I regret it almost every time.
