W123 Vacuum shutdown pod replacement

Not shutting off with the key could be a vacuum shutdown pod problem, Check it with a mityvac before removing just in case its a leak elsewhere, but should you find yourself in need of replacing the shutdown pod, you need to watch this video to save yourself a potentially very costly mistake!
If installed incorrectly the shutdown pod can stick the fuel rack at full fuel, which is going to be a very bad day for your engine.
Alternatively, if installed crooked it could severely limit your rack travel and thus reduce power output to a fraction of what it should be.

So will your manual shutoff work to shut car off if this is bad? Also will manual shut off work if runaway diesel?

If the vacuum pod fails the manual stop lever under the hood will still work. If the stop pod is installed incorrectly, the stop lever will not stop the engine. You would have to hold the stop lever down and remove the stop pod from the idling engine if I've got things straight in my head. If the engine runs away because of a stuck rack or something else then the only way to stop it is by stopping the air supply by placing something over the turbo inlet directly (not your hand)
