Ken Tanaka of Wish4Fish heads out to the famous Beaverkill River after a crappy result of adventuring some "wild" New Jersey streams. Catching Rainbows and Browns with some nymph fishing as well as dry fly. The temp is dropping and the early fall fishing was fantastic.

Holy shit that opening line was awesome! Dude I'm from Florida and started fly fishing in NJ over 3 years ago. My first thought was you can't catch fish where they don't exist. Not seeing any bait fish or other life on the water I was rather disappointed. However, I have found some decent spots where you can find wild fish. Parts of the Saddle river and over in Long Valley have been the most successful to name a few. 👍😎

Haha... no doubt. Yeah, I know some streams that hold fish now. Although drive 2hrs for that or just a couple more to State College or Catskills? I took the 2nd route 😉

@@Wish4Fish I'm finally at the point where I'm willing to explore more. Plus my fly fishing skills have improved since I started. My time is limited so I gotta make the most of it. Any pro tips or suggestions to aid the learning curve of new water?

Thanks for the kind words Brad! Do you live in the Northern or Eastern part of IN? Because there are some great trib fisheries off Lake Michigan or some wild trout waters in Ohio as well. Better yet take a trip to Michigan! TONS of trout streams there.

Im in indianapolis .IN LOL i wouldnt even know how to find a spot to fish . and im also not able to pay big money to have someone take me. I have gear just cant find anyone in this freekin city that want's to fly fish ... its kinda killing me hahahahahahah . I have looked for a fishing club or something but these old guys look at me like im from MARS!!!!! i guess in indianapolis you have to be 50 +years old to even own a flyrod!!!! lol how i feel at least...you know of any good web sites i can look at?
@Wish4Fish
@Wish4Fish 10 жыл бұрын
HAHA... I hear you there! I have a couple suggestions. As for finding a place to fish... a good place to find wild trout streams near you would be to check out wildtroutstreams.com. You can look up and download maps that you can open in google maps to find wild stream per state. Or you can also go to each department of natural resources website and they should have information on wild streams as well as stocked streams on their site. For instance here is the IN DNR site www.in.gov/dnr/fishwild/files/fw-trout_locations.pdf As for fishing clubs... I would join Trout Unlimited. Great place to meet like minded folks as well as take part in many conservation activities they have as well group trips. Another thing I might suggest is to start a group on Facebook! Like a group called Indianapolis Fly Flying or Indiana Fly Fishing. Might be able to meet some peeps that way.

To answer Colin Dulaney's question. Seems you have to reply to comment disabled so I wasn't able to reply to your comment directly. I also sent you a PM. There are many streams in NY. The Delaware system, Neversink, The Willo and Beaverkill are just a couple around that area. Tons of small feeder streams as well for great Brookies. The Salmon River is great for lake run Bows in the Fall as well.

i`m new to fly fishing so this might sound dumb, but I bought a couple of size 14 pheasant tail nymphs off of Orvis and they look so small I couldn`t imagine a trout eating them.

@Wish4Fish 8 жыл бұрын
+Devin Nau - No question is dumb when it comes to fly fishing. Feel free to ask anything you want. That's what it's all about. Oh they will eat them alright! I have caught very nice size trout on size 22 and 24! Matter of fact 14 is large! Most all my flies are 16. Are you on Facebook? You should hit me up on there. Much easier to go back and forth and at least then no one can see your questions. www.Facebook.com/Wish4Fish

Great video! As a dry-fly newbie, I noticed that you tended to cast across/down stream rather than upstream (which people say helps reduce drag). Have you found a difference? Thanks!
@Wish4Fish
@Wish4Fish 10 жыл бұрын
Thanks you! I personally like it better and think its a bit easier to get a drag free drift. Easier to mend and also to use a reach cast. Straight upstream is also good for drag free drift but you can line the fish that way. You also have to strip line directly upstream. Best thing to do is change your approach. Sometimes it might be better directly upstream and sometime across helps. I like to aim 45 degrees upstream.

+Michael Andersen - This particular video all my cameras are Sony Action Cam AS30. The Sony is FAR superior to the GoPro. Look at any side by side tests. Looks better + sounds better = better For my more recent video I am using the Sony X1000V 4k for the head mounted cam.

+Wish4Fish I'm blaming it all on you. I just bought the FDR-X1000x 4K. Being in photography I felt the 4K with the wrist band was the way to go. It will be nice to put some stuff on my you tube site. Again thanks for the advise.
@Wish4Fish
@Wish4Fish 8 жыл бұрын
HAHA. Nice! I will take full credit. It's definitely the way to go! The "Live Remote" is definitely the way to go. Otherwise you would have to use your phone as a view finder. Which isn't a problem when indoors or when static but I don't think you can do much "action" while holding a device in one hand. I mean how else would you know what your framing looks like? Or if you even have it in frame? Since you're a photographer you know the importance of lens quality. Zeiss gives a much better look with natural light as well as low light compared to the GP. I love how you see a LOT of test of side by side footage, audio, low light, image stabilization.... and Sony is clearly the winner. Yet they pick GoPro as the winner. WTF? How much is GoPro paying these people?

@Wish4Fish
@Wish4Fish 8 жыл бұрын
There are a lot of great places in NY. Connected to the BK you have the Wilowemoc and the East Branch of the Delaware. You have the Neversink, which is very close by. During the Fall and Winter months you have the Salmon River. You also have the Ausable. Many Many more if you do a little digging.

Nice brown at the Top of the Cairn's pool. what did you get him on it looked like he took a dry but which pattern. I haven't been able to get any during the day up there on the surface at all. Also, where were you when you saw the bear? Sorry about the questions but I am just trying to learn the spots on the river more. Next time you are in NJ try Van Campens Brook. If you tryed there and had no luck, go back there after a good rain for the water level to rise. For the size of the stream you would be surprised at the amount of trout and the size of some and they are all wild fish. try a tugsten torpedo and a caddis larvae and you are guaranteed to catch multiple fish ( as long as the water levels are up.) Should be about 4 feet wide when best and you should try placing your camera underwater. When I did that I counted nearly 10 wild trout in a hole about a foot wide by 2 feet long. Also make sure to go to the restored Mill Brook Village about a couple miles from the glen area. If you need directions let me know and I can tell you, or look for them in Tom Gilmores book trout Fishing 150 miles from the big apple or something like that. Thanks for the great vid and it is always great to see someone practicing catch and release

Thanks man. Are you talking about the first fish? Or the fish towards the end? Either way... First fish was on a BWO parachute s18. The one that jumped as soon as i casted it was on a small cahill parachute. I actually showed the fly. All the other fish were on the BWO s18. About the bear.... What do you mean where? Like what river or where in the river? I tried several NJ streams and NOT a big fan! I actually live in NJ but go to PA every weekend for streams. Nice Arowana! I have a South American / African tank. I have a Green Terror and Managuense mixed with Yellow Lab, Taiwan Reef, Sunshine and Frontosa.

The first fish was caught on a BWO. (along with most the others) In the video you see me tie on a yellow fly. Which can be a cahill or sulphur pattern. The second largest fish was caught on that fly.

s18 BWO Parachute, s18 and s20 Cahill / Sulphur pattern and s18 English Pheasant Tail Nymph. I would contact Fletcher's Flies. He will be able to hook you up with everything you need! Hand tied flies made in the USA. Not some sweat shop production. His site is www.etsy.com/shop/fletchersflies Although he is moving at the moment so his site is down. I just contacted him and he told me that you should contact him directly. Mention that I sent you and he will take care of you. I am going to DM his email to you.

What's your take on fall fly fishing Thanks
@Wish4Fish
@Wish4Fish 10 жыл бұрын
I like fall fishing (besides really cold days). Although sometimes trout can get a little picky after there is a lot of junk in the water like leaves and debris. You can't beat the beautiful scenery of the leave change either! Couple negatives are the lack of significant hatches and fishing mostly tiny flies.

The only Helios item I own is a hat that I got for free :) I live kind of near Lake Ontario and have been fishing the tributaries lately, but I am itching to do some stream fishing with less lake trout.. I am pumped for nice weather!
