Great Video as usual Ken! I'll be up there for the weekend! Hope to see some Drakes maybe. Oh Yeh! Bringing my 3 BOO Rods! a 4,5/6 and 6/7. Maybe a caddis Pupa on the dropper and a beadhead pheasant tail soft hackle on the terminal end. Hope to see you up there some time ! Ill let you Fish some BOO! Tom

Thomas Puzio Sr - The caddis hatch was ridiculous when I was there as you can see. I'm sure it has dropped off a bit since then. BK angler says to keep a "well stocked fly box" Seems that the hatches are very sporadic.

Tied up a couple of your zebra midge, hopefully they will work well over here in Scotland
@Wish4Fish9 жыл бұрын
flyfishing edinburgh - Nice! Over here they work best in late fall and winter. Primarily because midges hatch all year round and during the winter months can be the only thing hatching. But with that being said I'm sure they will work anytime. Good luck and let me know if you catch some on them. Tight Lines....

Hey Ken, I come seeking advice. I go fishing very often, but I only use dries(until pretty recently). The problem is everyone is catching except me, I dont know what I'm doing wrong. I have tried nymphs but I don't know how far below my indicator the nymph should hang.. I caught alot on dries before, but right now nothing wants my dries.. Can you give me some tips? (I fish a big slow river with depths of 1ft to 6ft).
@Wish4Fish9 жыл бұрын
norawydarkness - Dies are definitely the most fun to use. I personally like fishing dries more than nymphing. Although you should know that trout do 80% or their eating under water! I ONLY throw on dries when there is a hatch going on. You should check out my next video that will be up soon. Had a fantastic dry fly session during a May Fly hatch. Interesting thing was there were several different May Flies hatching at the same time. Crane Flies, Cahills and Sulphurs... along with some others. I tied on a Blue Quill, Griffiths Gnat, Adams... not one take. Then a Sulphur landed on my arm so I tied on a Sulphur and must of landed 15+ fish in 30min. I was fishing nymphs all day except one time I saw some fish rising in the middle of the day to some blue quills and tied on a dry and landed one fish. About the depth. You're suppose to have the nymph 1.5 - 2x the depth of water. For example if the water is 2ft have the nymph 3 - 4ft away from the indicator. Speaking of indicator. What are you using? I personally like using the stick on indicator. Easy to use, quick and easy to move. You can move it a couple time (more if its moving it deeper because the leader gets thicker as you move it upwards) before the adhesive becomes weak. You can use the Orvis Stick on ovals or Lightning Strike stick ons. I would also use a double nymph rig. Pick a larger fly as your top fly and something smaller trailing it. You might wanna try a dry dropper. Tie on a dry and use a nymph dropper. Not only can you catch the occasional rising fish but your dry will serve as a indicator. I really like using this technique. Also... even so you see a visible hatch going on... they might not be taking dries. For instance most caddis hatches are way more successful using emergers. As you see in this video. I would also try to use some weight. Not every time but experiment with it. Definitely for the sections of your stream that are 6ft you might wanna try some weight. I highly suggest weigh putty. Not only can you mold it to the desired weight but easy to put on and off. Although you have to add a section to your leader with some tippet to make a stopper for the weight. But I always add tippet to my leaders so I have this already. If you dont have this the putty will slide down your leader / tippet right to your fly. The weight will help get the fly down to your desired depth faster. Very important in deep water or holes. Also... you should be ticking bottom every now and then. If you're not ticking bottom every once and a while your not deep enough... Although if you're ticking bottom every time you're set too deep. Good Luck and Tight Lines

Thanks, Yeah that mayfly hatch surprised me too. No fish were taking at 8pm yesterday, then 8am this morning I caught 8 grayling, all on the klinkhamer and mayfly. I think it was ephemeridae danica(?) that was hatching. Had some great fun catching 3-400g grayling on the dries! As for nymphs, I'll keep this information in handy until the next time I can't seem to catch anything on the dry. If you want to see the fish I will be uploading them to instagram tonight. My page is called "Flyfishing_norway". Greetings from Norway

Hey Ken, awesome vids and new sub here! Heading to the Beaverkill River this season I have not been there for awhile. Can you mention what nymphs and size were you using? Your videos are very educational and inspired me to get back to flyfishing. Thank you!
@Wish4Fish8 жыл бұрын
+Outdoorscout - Thanks for the kind words and support! The BK is a fantastic stream for sure. What I was using then would be completely different when you go possibly. There was a caddis hatching going on when I was there although no risers. So I was assuming that the trout were taking the emergers and nymphs. I was using the caddis pupa and the caddis emerger. Although I was keep a close eye on what's happening on the water and go with that. Maybe stop by the local fly shop (Beaverkill Angler beaverkillangler.com) as well as take a look at their fishing report.

Hey Ken, good videos. I was wondering if you switch your fly line or have 2 rigs when transferring between dry and nymph fishing?
@Wish4Fish8 жыл бұрын
Thanks +Ryan Echeverri. The only time I use a different fly line is with my streamer rod. Everything else I use a Rio Gold 5wt floating line. Same rod, line and leader when nymphing and dries. Although when nymphing I will add some extra tippet at times and usually fluorocarbon tippet as well. My streamer rod is a 6wt with a In-Touch Streamer Tip line. I just recently switched to In-Touch. Matter of fact all my videos are of me using the regular Rio Streamer Tip line in 6ips.

i live on the river but dont know what flies to throw, what are five must haves ?
@Wish4Fish9 жыл бұрын
real outdoors56 - 5 flies is tough. Here are 5 dries and 5 nymphs. 5 dries for the BK would have to be Isonychia (slate drake), Light Cahill, Parachute Adams, Sulphur, BWO. 5 nymphs would be Hares Ear, Pheasant Tail, Super Pupa, Zebra Midge, Caddis Emerger. The thing about flies is that you can ask 10 fisherman and you will get 10 different responses. Some of those flies are critical at certain times on the BK during the times of their hatch. Although things like the Adams, Hares Ear, Pheasant Tail and Zebra Midge can be used on any stream. Check out the hatch chart for times and sizes of different hatches on the BK. I would also highly suggest hitting up Beaverkill Angler. Not only for their local knowledge but you can also read stream reports on their website. Hatch Charts www.flyfishingconnection.com/beaverkill.html Stream Reports beaverkillangler.com/fishingreport.html

what weight fly rod do you suggest using. thank you and great video
@Wish4Fish8 жыл бұрын

I fish streams in ny the most but Want to get up to the beaverkill soon. I have a 3 wt fly rod and a 5wt so I was wondering if I could get away with the 3 in the beaverkill or if I need to use my 5. Thanks for your help.
@Wish4Fish8 жыл бұрын
OH!.. I'm sorry, for some reason I thought you were asking in general and not specifically for the BK. My bad. In my opinion the best rod most of the time is the 5wt. Including this river. It is very versatile and could be used for dries, nymphing and streamers. Sure you could easily get away with using your 3wt. Might be fun if you see some nice rises. Maybe set up your 3wt for dries and your 5wt for nymphing or streamers. If you can only take one then it's the 5wt for me.
@shanegulliksen2968 жыл бұрын
+Wish4Fish thank you that's probably what I'll do when I get a chance to head up there. not to keep hamering you with questions but what are streamers you suggest for trout in the BK and other streams. thank you so much for the quick responses and all the advice.
@Wish4Fish8 жыл бұрын
One of the best things to start with is a big woolly bugger. If you're chasing big boys then I would step it up to something articulated. Personally I like Mikes Meal Ticket by Mike Schmidt of Anglers Choice Flies. www.anglerschoiceflies.com/ My #2 streamer is the Schultzy's S4 Sculpin. Very similar fly.. I think with a streamer it's all about presentation. You present that fly correct the first pass and the trouts gonna hit it. No matter what color or style it is.

Nightcrawlers and spin rod will almost always outfish fly fishing except for fish in spawning mode. Fly fishing is mostly for show offs who make it into too much of a competition and science ( too difficult to be fun and relaxing). Beaverkill and Roscoe are over fished and overrated ( not a true wilderness experience).
