"Enter the Dragon" is a 1973 martial arts film directed by Robert Clouse, written by Michael Allin, and starring Bruce Lee, John Saxon and Jim Kelly. It was Lee's final completed film appearance before his death on 20 July 1973 at the age of 32. An American and Hong Kong co-production, it premiered in Los Angeles on 19 August 1973, one month after Lee's death. The film is estimated to have grossed over US$400 million worldwide (estimated to be the equivalent of over $2 billion adjusted for inflation as of 2022), against a budget of $850,000. Having earned more than 400 times its budget, it is one of the most profitable films of all time as well as the most successful live-action martial arts film.

Bruce died shortly before Enter the Dragon came out.When it became a hit,the 3 earlier Hong Kong movies he did were quickly released in the U.S. to cash in.Eventually,someone took footage from a film he was working on before Enter (including a spectacular fight between Lee and Kareem Abdul-Jabar),shot new footage with different actors,and released the mess as Game of Death.

the is was the movie that changed not just martial arts but action films as we know it today. as a kid was able to see the original theatrical version shortly after his death in theaters. hard to describe the impact this had on myself and people of all ages and races. it created a vacuum for the next decade in martial arts films.

It's been said in interviews that Bruce was so fast that he had to slow down his movements so the audience could actually see what he was doing. There are other clips of Bruce at his natural speed. His punches and kicks are barely visible.

According to Jackie Chan, Bruce Lee actually caught him in the face when he smacked him into the vat (Jackie is also the poor dude who gets his neck snapped by Bruce with that dramatic zoom in) and Bruce promised to make a movie with him as an apology. Damn shame we never got to see that collaberation, it would have been spectacular

A big thumbs up for Bob Wall who had the skills and capacity to get hit by Bruce. They were good friends and Bob was a tough cookie. That final side kick to the chest was done in one take and broke the arm of a stunt man as Bob collapsed on top of him.

7:02 "This is like some James Bond $h!t! But with Bruce Lee!" The pitch to the studio was in fact "Bruce Lee vs Dr No" 12:57 "This might be too fast for film!" He was in fact too fast for the cameras and had to slow down for them to catch it. This movie is full of legends. Along with Bolo, Jim Kelly went on to be big star in blaxploitation movies including "Black Belt Jones" and "3 The Hard Way" The big guy he's sparring with at the beginning was Sammo Hung, Jackie Chan's "Big Brother" who collaborated with him frequently and had a TV show here for a few seasons. Bruce did have a couple doubles, his back was injured at this point and he couldn't do those flips. One of them is Yuen Biao, Jackie Chan's "*Little* Brother" and the other is Yuen Wah who was The Landlord in "Kung Fu Hustle" and the archery master in Marvel's "Shang Chi." Jackie Chan himself is a couple different thugs who get's his butt kicked by Bruce. Pat Johnson, one of the thugs that try to rough up Roper for his debts, was a trainer and choreographer on "The Karate Kid" and portrayed the ref in the tournament scene. The villain Han, played by Hong Kong legend Kien Shih, spoke no English. He learned his lines phonetically and a British actor over-dubbed them in post.
@YolandaAnneBrown95726

The actor who dubbed Kien Shih was the legendary Keye Luke, who was in the series "Kung Fu" which Lee had originated and hoped to star in, but they cast David Carradine instead. Luke was also Gizmo's owner in the Gremlins series.

This was his only Hollywood movie and the last movie he made before he died. (He began filming "Game of Death" before starting "Enter the Dragon" but left it incomplete, intending to finish it after completing ETD but he never got a chance.) There's only three other *complete* movies. ("The Big Boss" "Fist of Fury" and "Way of The Dragon") You should see them all. Don't, however, see the studio release of "Game of Death" - it only uses part of the footage he shot and they chopped it together with new footage they shot with unconvincing look-alike doubles. Instead see "Bruce Lee: A Warrior's Journey" - it's a documentary from 2000 that has all of the Game of Death footage intact as Bruce originally edited it. The Hollywood biopic "Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story" is highly fictionalized, but a lot of fun and will give you an idea of the timeline. Hollywood discovered him in his early 20's but after his few TV appearances, he couldn't get any work. He returned to Hong Kong when his father died and discovered Green Hornet reruns were huge and he was already a star there. He started making movies there in 1971, returned to Hollywood to make this movie the next year and was gone the year after that. There are all of his Green Hornet episodes which are not as impressive. There was a crossover 2-part with Adam West Batman which is fun. He did play a recurring character on a show called "Longstreet" as the hero's martial arts instructor. He's only in a couple episodes for a couple minutes, but it's worth tracking down just to see those scenes. You get to see and hear a lot of the foundation principles, philosophy, and theory on which his fighting sytem is built.

@@JosephHuntelvisnspiders There's controversy so we'll never know the whole story, but the known facts are: Bruce had an idea for a show that was *very similar.* He did audition for Kung Fu, and the creators of the show maintain that they had the idea before they met Bruce, but they really liked him for the part and wanted him for the show. The network nixed it and demanded a white lead. So at the very least, the *role* was "stolen" from him in a sense. The Lee Estate maintains that the *idea* for the whole show was stolen *entirely* from Bruce, and then tweaked in minor ways to avoid accusations of plagiarism and to please studio and network executives. Showtime's "Warrior," co-produced by The Lees, is based on Bruce's original concept.

"Boards don't hit back." Fun Fact: An extra challenged Bruce Lee to a fight to see if he really was that good. Lee won the fight and sent the extra back to work. That's My Jackie Fact: Jackie Chan Appears twice in the film. Towards the end of the movie in the big cave fight scene. Lee grabs his hair for a while before breaking his neck. He is also one of the stuntmen that Lee hits when he wields two sticks. Bruce Lee actually struck Jackie Chan in the face with one of his fighting sticks. He immediately apologized and insisted that Chan could work on all of his movies after that. Unfortunately, Lee died before he could keep his promise. Bad Lip Reading Fact: The movie was filmed without sound. All of the dialogue and effects were dubbed in during post-production. The only possible anomaly however was the scene at the beginning where Braithwaite (Geoffrey Weeks) briefs Lee (Bruce Lee) on the mission to pursue the crime lord named Han and requests him to become an undercover agent in the international intelligence organization. Here, the voices and the sound effects of the aforementioned scene was captured on-set as opposed to being dubbed in post-production. However despite the dubbing, this is one of only two English-language movies in which Bruce Lee speaks with his natural voice. The other is Marlowe (1969).
@curtistom9879
@curtistom9879 24 күн бұрын
As far as I know, almost all theatrical release movies do lip syncing and dubbing in post, even if there isn’t any heavy translation planned. It is simply easier to control the sound environment in a mic’ed studio setting than on a film set or location. They try to get as clean a sound recording as they can while the camera is rolling, but they only use it as guide track, when the budget is big enough. The last location film work I did, we had a sound recordist out there, and they really were going to try and use the sound as captured… but that was only because we were shooting dirt cheap.

As much as people wished that Tania didn't die, she had to. She was a major part of the problem and clearly knew of Han's activities. She wasn't just an innocent bystander, but an accomplice and recruiter for Han. It's not even clear if she truly loved Roper, since she was talking to him about being part of the team, using her body and the body of the other prostitutes' and victims of Han's islands. Although Roper is heartbroken, it was her choices that led to her death.

Great reaction. Seen this in the Cinema as a kid, (under age of course). Guaranteed Kung-Fu fighting in the school grounds the following Monday. Rod Taylor was first choice for playing Roper, but was dropped after Lee deemed him to be too tall for the role. John Saxon, who was a black belt in Judo and Shotokan Karate (he studied under grandmaster Hidetaka Nishiyama for three years), became the preferred choice. During contractual negotiations, Saxon's agent told the film's producers that if they wanted him they would have to change the plot so that the character of Williams is killed instead of Roper. They agreed and the script was changed. (WiKi)

Man I really liked your reactions to each of these scenes! welp I had to subscribe. Thankfully, Lee was able to sneak in a few movies starting at the very last 1.5 year of his life. Prior to that...there are zero action movies, he was simply a veteran at live combat. In live situations he had fought; Black Belts, Pro Fighters, Ex military, Champions, 3rd degree Masters, Rival Martial Artists, and opponents that outweighed him by 100 pounds. His battle experience started as a young boy and lead all through out his teens + adulthoodhood. The few movies he DID get to make were only at the last 1.5 years of his life which has been a very brief opportunity for him to report his life experiences and give that insight into live combat. He only made 3 little movies plus One Hollywood film, a very short attempt at films but we're lucky he at least made them and snuck them right in JUST before he died to show us his insights on his personal life of hard combat. Lee is ranked by Sports Illustrated in the 50 Greatest Athletes of All Time, with near super human strength that could raise unbelievable weights that Pro Weight Lifters could not

Thank goodness for the way Robert Clouse really pulled that production together and controlled a situation that could have spun sideways with all those talents and egos involved. Enter The Dragon is the first movie I can remember seeing in my life. I was a very young child, and Bruce Lee is the first celebrity or movie star I ever heard of. I saw it at a drive in movie theater with my parents. My father explained to me who Bruce Lee was, I had no idea. It's probably the first movie I ever heard of. It's strange to me now touching on all those old memories, there's nothing else I can think of with the same power and vivid recall, I didn't know anything about anything and I was blindsided, I can still remember the sight of Han's claw stuck on the block of wood, and a few other things, especially the part with the mirrors of course I never saw anything like that it was overwhelming. It's hard to describe the significance of Enter The Dragon to me.

I agree about The Way Of The Dragon fight scene being perfect. But tell me your opinion on the following. I was told that the slow motion sequence during that fight was actual improvised sparring. Just that one part of the fight was not choreographed; they wanted to capture that sense of flow and freedom. I think it’s true, after having watched it again -just for that one slo-mo sequence. What do you all think?

Fyi, a few other legends of Hong Kong cinema are in this film as well, the heavier set fighter, facing off against Lee in the beginning is kung fu royalty, Sammo Hung. Also, the legendary Jackie Chan, plays one of the henchmen in one of his earliest roles. You should also check out the parody of this film, Balls of Fury, which has Christopher Walken as the villain, hamming and cheesing it up in the best possible way, as only he can. Speaking of Christopher Walken, if you haven't already seen them, Suicide Kings and the first The Prophecy films are great choices, beyond the quintessential The Deer Hunter.

Bruce Lee made very few movies. This one was his only Hollywood movie. It was what was supposed to be his introduction to the wider world. Before this movie, his only Hollywood acting role was that of Kato in The Green Hornet. All of Bruce Lee’s other movies were Hong Kong films made by a production company called Golden Harvest. They were The Big Boss, Fist of Fury, and Way of the Dragon. When Bruce was offered the role in Enter The Dragon, he was part way through making his latest movie, Game of Death. Sadly he died before he could complete it. The producers completed it posthumously using scenes from his other movies, look alikes, stunt doubles, etc. It’s not Bruce’s best movie, but it’s impressive how well it turned out given the limitations of the time (no deep fake computer program back then).

Great movie. did you see the movie Dragon ? which is a great bio movie about his life. You should see his other movies like Fist Of Fury, The Way of the Dragon,The Big Boss. Also you should watch Fist Of Legend which is a Jet Lee remake of Fist Of Fury. There is also a great sketch on this movie in the spoof movie "The Kentucky Fried Movie". Fyi Mortal Kombat was more inspired by Blood Sport and Big Trouble in Little China although Liu Kang is based on Bruce Lee. The Game was suppose to be a Blood Sport game staring Van Damme but It did not work out so they remade it but left Johnny Cage (The first character made) as a homage to Van Damme. Also Fyi the scene with the Nunchaku weapon you see the guard Bruce Lee is holding in the head is a young Jack Chan.

Great reaction vid! I'm sure by now you already know sadly, this film finished shooting in May 1973. Bruce Lee was gone before the august release of "Enter The Dragon. This was the 4th and final completed film of his" leading man" career. After viewing the rough cut, WB execs wanted to start a franchise with the "Lee" character in which they were planning several sequels to this film. If only... Again, great reaction.

Bruce Lee died in 1973 a month before the release of Enter the Dragon. He left the US after his ideas of the TV show Kung Fu was stolen from him after playing Kato in the Green Hornet. He was in TV shows like Longstreet but made his hit movies in China with the Shaw Brothers. Enter the Dragon was the only Hollywood movie he made. And never got to see its huge success. His movies were The Big Boss (Fist of Fury), Fist of Fury (Chinese Connection), Way of the Dragon (Return of the Dragon), And Game of Death which he didn't complete. The names were changed in America. As usual.. Hope it helps... ✌️

One of the odd things in this movie is that Han and Lee are from the Shaolin Temple, which is CHINESE. Both Bruce Lee, and Han are wearing traditional Chinese outfits, yet everyone else, is in Japanese Gi's. All the guys in white, are wearing Japanese outfits, performing what looks like Japanese arts, like Karate. The guys who assault his sister at the start, are all in Chinese outfits. It's such an odd thing to see a Shaolin monk choose to hold a Japanese school, with Japanese arts. That may have been a result of US / Japanese relations after WWII, where the Japanese pretty much dominated "martial arts in America". This was his final movie. It was his first and only movie funded by a US studio. He had a lot of input regarding the Shaolin philosophy in this story. Bruce pretty much brought martial arts to a Western movie audience. He was the GOAT. He was exceptionally fast, and powerful.

"He needs to take care of Han. Han needs to get got" I first remember Bruce Lee as Kato in The Green Hornet TV series. His next memorable part was as Winslow Wong in the movie "Marlowe". It's only a small part but Bruce made his scenes explosive! He then appeared in four episodes of Longstreet. Bruce Lee easily dominates every scene he is in. Then respectively: "Fists of Fury" (The Big Boss) 1971 "The Chinese Connection" (Fists of Fury) 1972 "Enter the Dragon" & "Return of the Dragon" (Way of the Dragon" 1973 And the three fight scenes with Dan Inosanto, Ji Han-jae and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for "Game Of Death". Bruce Lee's creative use of martial arts champions, masters and instructors in his movies are on a level not seen before. Or since. And not to be overlooked are his philosophical interpretations. He studied philosophy at the University of Washington. His interpretations are every bit as riveting as his cinematic fight scenes. Jim Kelly is a Karate champion that used his skills and abilities in the movies: "Black Belt Jones" "3 The Hard Way

@@Raven5150 Think John Saxon wasn’t even the first person in mind to play that part. ( William Smith was that men ) Original Title for Enter The Dragon was Blood and Steel ! Bruce Lee change that Title, and wrote in the script to make the movie better. But Bruce took him, then the other actor was to Tal in relation to Lee. Without Lee is this film nothing worth. Where knows Saxon, where knows Lee!??? Everyone in the Globe 🌎 knows Bruce Lee.

America wasn’t interested in a chinese american star so Bruce went back to hong kong and shot 3 and a half films before hollywood decided to make a movie with him. Enter the Dragon was originally called Blood and steel but Bruce made the studio change it to enter the dragon because Bruce Lee was known as Lee Little Dragon. Sadly he didn’t get to see it as he died aged 32 of cerebral edema a sort of brain swelling and his son Brandon died aged 28 not seeing his breakout film either Brandon was shot when a prop gun was loaded with live ammo. RIP Brandon and Bruce Lee sadly missed but never forgotten. 😭😭😭 His daughter Shannon her daughter Wren and Bruce Lee’s wife Linda are keeping their memory alive. take care 😘

I assume, since this video is 4 months old, you already know this, but this was Lee’s Hollywood breakthrough, but sadly, also his last, as it was released posthumously. He has three films in the Hong Kong cinema - “The Big Boss”, “ the Chinese connection”, and “ way of the dragon” (although these films also go by different names. For instance, “way of the dragon” is also known as “return of the Dragon.”)(yes it does make things confusing sometimes.) Also, there is the “games of death” which was partially completed.

Too fast for film? Yes, actually.. Those cameras back then weren’t capable cinematically recording Lee’s bursts of speed so a lot of what you "can see" is Bruce Lee slowing down for the cameras sake. Perfect example: at 12:59 Lee hits O’hara with a backfist that you can only see in Slo-Mo! Check it out, lol Bruce was athletic but not enough to jump into that tree.. He was filmed hopping out of the tree and then it was shown in reverse, lol. Williams-Jim Kelly was-chosen by Bruce to survive and fight with Lee at the end but Saxon pulled rank-threatened to pull out of the movie if he didn’t get that part; you see the result.. Jim Kelly was an actual full contact fighter; imagine the fight scenes Lee would have developed for Kelly and Bolo and for Bruce and Jim as a team. Bruce Lee choreographed ALL the fight scenes by the way. 13:20 That kick(lunging side kick)we used to call the ThunderKick back in the day, lol but here’s the thing.. Bob Wall(O’hara)had a miscue and held onto the bottle resulting in a deep cut into Bruce’s hand. Lee was very upset and poised for payback. So the next time they rehearsed Lee kicked him instead of pushed him as you saw in the film. Wall said it felt like he got kicked by a horse; one of the stuntmen slammed into by wall had his arm(s)broken from the impact… ETDragon came out in August ‘73 about a month after Lee died. A lot of guys yap about Bruce Lee not being a "real fighter" but I’ll leave you with just one counter to that. I visited the World Of Bruce Lee in Hollywood, Ca for the 10th anniversary of Lee’s death. One of the guest speaker’s that day was the guy who fabricated most of the equipment you see Lee using in photos. Anyway he said at the time of Bruce’s passing he was trying to construct a hybrid mechanical punching bag because Lee was lamenting that when it came to sparring/training w/others he could not: A. Employ his full power B. Use his true speed C. Work up a sweat sparring/training with human beings…🤔
