I'm not a huge Dio fan but his talent cannot be denied. And he's notoriously hard to cover. He could sing higher than hell, had a ton of power and his pitch was impeccable, he was never flat. Not even Ian Gillan or Rob Halford could could sing his songs. The only one I ever heard come close was Geoff Tate when Queensryche covered Neon Knights.

A lot of hate for belladonna. As a life long vocalist, that makes me sad. If we singers could just put on a fresh set of strings, and kick ass, life would be good. Everything affects our voice; sleep. Weather. Food. Stress. Monitors. Age. Testosterone levels. Drugs- even over the counter kinds. Joey belladonna has been kicking ass since 1984’s Armed And Dangerous EP. As good as John Bush was in Anthrax, no one sings big 4 thrash like Joey. Dude is 63 years old. Not too many guys can sing like this still into their 60’s. Look at Robert Plant, arguably classic rock’s greatest vocalist- pretty much shot at 40. Bruce Dickinson is finally showing his age, vocally, at 66. Try not to be too harsh on old Joey- that Injun is still kicking ass

It's a tribute... Everyone interprets, I don't want to justify them. For me DIO is not replicable, whoever sings it will never be like him. But it is to be appreciated that in 2024 they are doing tributes to one of the fathers of Metal... In fact in Italian DIO means GOD

Their cover of heaven and hell on the Ronnie DIo tribute album is actually top class. the largest problem with Manowar, and this is speaking of somebody who has met and maintained a relationship with the band over the years, is the corny lyrics they write, despite being capable of writing some extremely intricate and thought-provoking ones. I feel like they're massively sell themselves short of the musical Talent that they actually possess and it makes me very sad. But, they're still my favorite band at the end of the day. tl:dr Eric could have definitely done this better than Joey, but fun fact; they're actually Friends Joey belladonna took over from Eric Adams in the band Bible Blackback in 1978 or 9 when he decided to give up music, it would then be the following year that Joey Demaio would twist his arm, and he would join Manowar

As you say, they sold themselves short and dumbed everything down instead of going for the epic. On a side note, I always thought that if David DeFies from Virgin Steele wrote with ManOwaR, that would have been incredible. Virgin Steele always suffered from shit production and would have benefitted from the ManOwaR production level. And Eric Adams singing!
