The Hobbit is more whimsical than LOTR because it was written for children and adolescents. LOTR was written for adults. I think some people forget this when they are comparing the two stories and these movies. The tones are very different. In Tolkien a Game of Riddles is considered as very sacred, a game that even evil creatures are hesitant to cheat at. And it is a game of winner takes all, meaning if the terms are agreed on, then the loser will fulfill his part. It is a measure of the hold of the One Ring on Gollum that he tries to cheat Bilbo, justifying it by using the Question "What have I got in my pocket?" (Which is not technically a riddle) as a justification to cheat. But Bilbo HAD agreed to the 3 guesses qualifier, which anulled the difference. And Gollum sneaked in a fourth guess too!)

The issues that most people seem to have about the hobbit movies stems mostly the book being a small(ish) children’s book while they made this into three long movies. The writers put a decent amount of extra stuff that wasn’t in the book (although some was in the appendices of LOTR). The other issue is that because the production was kind of a horror show, they couldn’t spend the necessary time on certain things. A lot of things being cgi made it easier to make but it definitely made things (like the orcs) look worse. From a movie perspective, I enjoyed the series. From an adaptation perspective however, I enjoy it less. Although adaptation wise, this movie is definitely the best out of the three

PLEASE, PLEASE make sure you watch the extended version of the third film - the theatrical version will do for the second one. Why? Because Peter Jackson was asked to take over these films when the original director backed out. He wasn't given enough time to complete the third film and it sometimes doesn't make sense. The extended edition does a proper job of telling the story because PJ had enough time after the theatrical version came out to finish it properly. People who only saw the theatrical version think it is the weakest of the three because of its rushed nature. BTW, all the songs are in the book - I also love Thorin's song - and these add to the child-like nature of the story. The book gets more serious towards the end, almost as if Tolkien had decided to create a bridge in the shifting tone between this children's book and the adult LotR which must have been already forming in his head. Lovely reaction to this film - thank you very much.

Morgoth (Sauron's master) did create the dragons to fight the eagles sent by his brother, the Vala Manwë (kind of St-Michel in the Tolkien's universe) during the first age. Smaug is the last of the big dragons in Middle Earth and he was the smallest among them. Morgoth is the greatest Evil being in Tolkien's universe, he is the Lucifer in the Silmarillion and the Lord of the Rings, he corrupted Sauron before Arda (Earth) was created like the Balrogs (some Maïar perverted). After he got defeated by the Valar (the others gods or Archangels) they decided to cut the hands and feet of Morgoth and push him through the Night Gate into the void, banished forever. He cannot die like Sauron because they are all immortal being but can be neutralized for a certain time. You have many ages : - Valarin age when the Ainur (Valar and Maïar) came on Arda just after its creation. - Trees age - First age of the Sun (around 600 years and ended when Morgoth has been defeated) - Second age of the Sun (around 3441 years, Sauron rules now on the Morgoth's armies in secret at the beginning and its ended to the battle of the last alliance when Isildur cut off the Sauron's fingers). - Third age of the Sun ( 3021 years. The war of the ring is in 3019 and the Hobbit takes place 70 years ago and its ended when Sauron is defeated and the ring destroyed) - Fourth age of the Sun (Aragorn makes the peace with the Rhûn (Eastern people) and the Hârad (Southern people). Tolkien explained it takes place long time ago in a alternative world. So Jesus Christ is born at the Seven age of the Sun for him. Another thing, you heard about Ungoliant in the movie. She was the first giant spider on Arda, she gave birth to Shelob (in the Return of the King) and Shelob gave birth to the spiders living the Mirkwood forest. She was living in the immortal lands and became temporary the partner of Morgoth. She became even more powerful than him after she drained the two trees.

He told Gandalf that his cousin Balin would greatly welcome them. And later, in Moria the fellowship arrives at a tomb. Shortly before the orcs attack. The grave of the last lord of Moria. Just a few more things here: Tolkien being a linguist first created the languages. mainly Sindarin and Quenya, the two Elvish languages. Then he imagined the people who would speak those languages, their aspect, world, culture, life and finally he came up with the stories. Speaking of languages: Dwarves are in many respects an allegory for the Jews - chased out of their homeland, wandering among other people - and even what little we have canonically of their language, Khuzdul, has a Semitic structure much like Hebrew, Arabic, Syriac etc. with that typical tri-consonantal root. You will hear a lot of Black Speech from Orcs, but that is entirely a movie thing and not canonical. But it sounds really good, harsh, unpleasant, credible. There is an entire new profession now in the film industry, that of the conlangist, a linguist who can create and develop imaginary languages (Klingon, Dothraki etc) According to canon, Sauron had devised the Black Speech but there are only two complete phrases plus a few words in canon (the inscription of the One Ring, a curse by an angry Orc in LOTR: "Ugluk u bagronk sha pushdug Saruman-glob bubhosh skai!", plus ghash = fire, snaga = slave and stuff like that. The idea is that Orcs are simply not intelligent enough to learn it, instead they speak a debased form of the Common Speech interspersing words from the Black Speech here and there.

If you'll recall, the Witch-king of Angmar was the Nazgul who stabbed Frodo on Weathertop. And the three trolls were the same ones from the story that Bilbo was telling the hobbit children at his birthday party. One of Peter Jackson's more interesting changes involved Gandalf. Gandalf in the original book never intended to go all the way to Erebor with the company; he only meant to guide them safely across the Misty Mountains (after all, he had another appointment to keep with the White Council). That's why Bilbo was the 14th member of the company and not the 15th.

Just to make u all clear about Galadriel and who she really is. She was the actual protagonist of everything!! After the death of Morgoth his disciple Sauron came into power. In the fight of elves and orcs Sauron kills Galadriel’s brother to which Galadriel takes his position and hunts Sauron for 1000 years but with no vain he was nowhere to be found because he was hiding in a human form. Soon Sauron deceptively makes the lord of the rings and becomes so powerful to which Galadriel forms an army of Men (Isildur), dwarf (Durin), Elves (Elrond) to defeat Sauron in which finally Isildur cut off his fingers and defeats him and that is how the story started. Extras: Morgoth was a valar (angelic power or gods) and an antagonist who is 1000x more powerful than sauron.

23:41 the thing is that the wizards aren't allowed to show their full power unless they're not seen by anyone. Gandalf the white lost to the witch king because he couldn't fight with full power but when he fought the Balrog he was an equal match because no one was able to see his full power.
@EditorStevo3 ай бұрын
He didn't fight the witch king in the book. The movie added that part, what you're saying isn't true at all. The witch king was just a man, he had no powers. Gandalf would have easily beaten him. If you read the books you'll see for yourself. There's a reason they disguised themselves as riders in black haha

Tolkien changed his mind back and forth about the angelic nature of the eagles (at times he said they were Maiar and similar in kind to Gandalf-just in eagle form), but from that it seems that they cannot intervene beyond a certain point. For me, that explanation makes the most sense! “As emissaries of the Valar, the Eagles may have been somehow limited in how they intervened to great events, which the Valar perhaps considered matters between the Elves and Sauron;[39] for example, they had sent the Wizards, who were prohibited to directly fight Sauron by physical or supernatural force, and the Eagles did aid the free peoples and even participated in battles. But otherwise, the Eagles would had been either afraid, unwilling, incapable, or (like the Wizards) forbidden to take any greater part.”

Shelob is distantly related to the other spiders in this movie. Shelob was born from a gigantic evil spider called Ungoliant (which Radagast mentioned) but these spiders are several generations past from Shelob's siblings. Shelob is the oldest (a couple thousand years) and likely evilest and most powerful spider.

If I remember correctly, the actors who played Thorin, Fili and Kili were all originally supposed to have dwarf prosthetics on their faces like the rest of the actors who played dwarves, but there was some sort of stupid studio mandate that vetoed it because they were considered to be sort of "the leading men" of these films, based on their roles in the story. Thus, the studio wanted them to be "handsome". This is why they don't look like dwarves. Peter Jackson tried to work around it by claiming through dialogue by other characters that those three were very young, so they hadn't quite gotten their epic noses and beards yet. Even though the childlike Ori is supposed to be the youngest of the 13 dwarves and in the original book Thorin was actually one of the oldest dwarves in the company.

That's why they come after being persuaded. Also, in this universe, eagles can think, make decisions and even talk. The big spiders are all children of Ungoliant, who is the mother of Shelob, the spider Frodo and Sam fought. Shelob in turn is the child of Ungoliant, the Evil Cosmic Spider of Hunger and Darkness. Ungoliant stole into elf heaven and ate the Two Magic Trees of Light that illuminated the cosmos before the Sun and Moon had to be invented because they got destroyed. Ungoliant is perhaps the most raw embodiment of a concept as you're going to find in Tolkien. She grew so hungry that eventually she consumed herself. Ungoliant represents the horror of darkness and the hunger of the void between the stars. And the void consumed itself, leaving only... the void where the void should be? Ungoliant is kinda trippy as the ur-Spider Cosmic force because Tolkien made her Hungry first and Evil Second as a result of the Hunger. Radaghast mentions Ungoliant when the Spiders appear, calls them her Brood. The cosmic hunger lives on embodied in the Spider form for Tolkien. If you think back to the orcs who found Frodo in the coccoon after tangling with Shelob, they mention that "She's always hungry, old Shelob." Spawn of the Great Cosmic Queen of Hunger, Ungoliant, of course Shelob is always hungry.
