On Steam there is a game Called Vulture for Nethack. Nethack is very much like the original game Rogue. I believe it is a followup to it actually. Vulture takes it from an ascii to a 3d 3/4 angle view. It can also be played in ascii. One of the very first games I ever played on the pc was Nethack, so this game has a special place in my heart for gaming. The commands on it are pretty much the same as they were in Rogue. You might check it out.

@muratcanagic6 жыл бұрын
It's "easy to learn and hard to master" type of roguelike. It has lots of content(weapons,enemies,playable chars etc.) and i personally love the sci-fi setting. But only and a big con for me is: even if you are a master, the game just doesn't care. It's unfairly hard. You should try one more time tho :)
@lance56914 жыл бұрын
Old video, but I recommend Elona. Really a hidden gem. It's an open world roguelike where you can be a hooker for money, nuke entire towns, or wield panties as a weapon. It's controls are not that bad for a roguelike, while it features a lot of hotkeys you can choose to use, you can do everything in the game with just 3 menus. The only real difficulty is not getting too entranced. 100s of hours on one character :)

My reason I haven't really checked it out is it doesn't really have an 'ending'. I tend to like more focused games instead of 'open world crafting' (main reason I don't play a lot of Unreal World either). That said, I haven't given it a shot so I will! :)
@OniricChef6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, AFAIK it's open-ended. If you want a more objective-based, then I played Tales of Maj'Eyal to death, for years. If not, ADOM seems a popular choice (ADOM2 under production), but I personally dislike the developer, and that makes me biased against the game...
@WaervynsWorld6 жыл бұрын
I'm the same with ADOM. Also I find the gameplay tedious (i.e. always open doors from diagonal because of rocks). Not my cup of tea. ToME and CoQ are currently my favourites. Not a big fan of DCSS, as I prefer having no foodclock and no unidentified/cursed items. Not that it's not a great game, it's just not for me.

Oh man, no TOME, you're killing me! That's the game that got me into roguelikes and it's still the one I go back to the most. Still a good list though, even if my favorite didn't make the cut. Little side note: I love your content. I found you recently while looking for Endless Space 2 tutorials and yours have been a big help. Keep up the good work!
@WaervynsWorld6 жыл бұрын
I actually wrote a piece about ToME to be included in the video as one of the five games (it is my favourite roguelike afterall), but I had to admit all the picks in the video are more suited to new players and therefore did not include it. I mean...I myself started my roguelike 'career' with Dwarf Fortress, so there's definitely people that like to jump into the deep end, but ToME is harder to learn than the ones listed (mostly due to the large amount of abilities you get greeted with the second you play your first character). However, it's still one of the easier to play roguelikes. Much easier to learn than ADOM and DCSS I'd say. Glad you like the content! :)

I don't like dungeons of dredmor, never got past the artstyle but I understand why you choose it. I would probably replace it for tales of maj'eyal since its not much harder to get into than Brogue or DRL imo. That said i really loved the video and subscribed hoping to see more well made videos about roguelikes. (maybe your top5 of all time?)
@MrDeni23n4 жыл бұрын
Brogue is one of my favourite (traditional) roguelikes of all time. I would add Shiren the Wanderer (PC release coming soon) as well, because it has a simple interface and easy to learn/play, but the different unique families of monsters (which reminds me of Brogue) makes it interesting and complex. The art style and music is really good. Most of the time you know exactly how you died, so you learn from it. The simplistic item system makes it so that almost every item you get is useful.
@martin_pl_843 жыл бұрын
I suggest 'The Ground Gives Way' for beginners. Next 'Brogue' :)

I guess steam calls it "traditional roguelikes" now. The doomrl link is down; I hope it comes back [It's back]. Speaking of doomrl, Jupiter Hell is out. There's always the original rogue. Maybe JS Rogue is best. Simple and has pictures and sounds. You can save your place and see your past scores. Best beginner online roguelikes would be a good video. There's an online brogue too.

I thought this was list for easier to learn roguelikes? I wouldn't count it there. Personally. I tried to get into that game couple of times, but eventually always got bored of it. Technically I think it's brilliant, but it does lack in athmosphere and feels overtly serious at a times. I'm really into Nethack, for about 15 years, and do like ADOM as well, though I haven't played that quite some time, and never got really far in it when I did.
@Lancelot2000Lps2 жыл бұрын
@@jhutt8002 I peresonal only like Dungeon stone crawl soup and any other roguelike is not for me because they are first too easy or fail in what i want from a roguelike and DSCS has the perfect gameplay. What version did you play because some versions are harder than other and play the title version and open the crawl wiki that helped me when i played it, i personal never have finshed a long game? And would you think Unrealworld is a roguelike when yes that is a awesome game too!!!
@jhutt80022 жыл бұрын
@@Lancelot2000Lps Nah, it was easy to play for me, as I had already very familiar with Nethack and had played Adom as well. Just saying all those are quite more complicated than ones on the video he was presenting. When you say other roguelikes are too easy for you, do you mean you've played those through and wanted more challenge, or just by principle? I really like Crawls style and technical gameplay, but it just feels too mechanical to me, like a puzzle more than eerie dungeon. I can't get inside the game, like with Adom or Nethack. I'm not really looking for new games to go into. I mostly these days play (and mod at the side) my own version of Nethack, which mainly aims to heavily increase difficulty, unpredicability and strategic variation in the late game.
