I believe this is one of the songs they wrote that were to be used for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics before it was obviously cancelled due to the pandemic

Great reaction and the use of other, more traditoinal instruments is always a welcome change in rock. We've had Ian Anderson shredding flute in Jethro Tull, flute in Canned Heat, harpsichord (similar to the koto used in Wagakki - it's that celestial sound you hear) used in a lot of early 60's bands because it's sound was so different (plucked with the fingers), the Sitars used by the Beatles to give an Eastern flavor to songs. So it's really interesting and gives music something more to add to the overall sound.

Beni Beni Beni! as others have mentioned the Instrument you were referencing is the KOTO (horizontal Harp) not the Shamisen (three stringed Banjo)

Wolfpack's here and everywhere. Hey, long time no see!! Let's go over the name of Japanese traditional instruments. You know Shamisen, but this kind is a little off regular. The play style is called Tsugaru-shamisen. It's much quicker and wilder and brutal than regular play style of Shamisen. Tsugaru is the region in the northern tip of Japanese main island, and that play style was born and developed in that region. The type of instrument called Futo-zao which means "fat rod" because it's got a thicker neck than regular shamisens. The horizontal harp is a Koto. The bamboo flute is a Shakuhachi, The Japanese drum or drum kit is called Taiko or Wa-daiko. The prefix "wa" means "Japanese" in this case, and taiko means a drum. This is it. Try the singer Yuko and the guitarist Machiya's duet titled "Doppo". It's a western side of Wagakki Band and sounds so pretty and a show case of their tremendous skill and talent. kzbin.info/www/bejne/l3jRZZ9-d8h-q6s Enjoy!! Oh, and "Doppo" means "walking alone".

Shamisen is interesting. Matt Heafy has been showing videos of himself practicing on his Shamisen.

The shamisen isn't what you're hearing at the times that you mention it, it's the koto that's providing the melody throughout, the shamisen is mostly adding detail (apart from Beni's solo). The director of the MV isn't helping as they only seem to want to focus on Yuko and Beni.

I must confess Beni Ninagawa (shamisen player) it's for me the most beautiful of all the Japanese female musicians. I don't fancy extremely thin women and that's why I can enjoy Band Maid and other bands only for their music and not for the looks. But in this case I'm not sure how much the beauty of Beni influence my opinion (I think not much, but I need a second opinion). Also Juna Serita (a great jazz bassist) from "Tokyio Groove Jyoshi" but in this case I think all heterosexual men and lesbian women can agree on her sex appeal. Man, probably I need to delete this comment.
