Great video man! I needed to be up to date as I was in the RasPi 3 hahah XD, and I needed to assemble some RasPi's 5 for a project. By the way, 6:40 the reason is because that case (as well as the fan that comes with it) assumes you don't have the cooler from the RasPi, so yeah, you have that "extra" heat dissipator. And also in 7:15 that's why you cannot put the plastic part there, because that case isn't designed for the cooler with the heatsink itself ;)) I'll keep watching and giving more feedback :D

Thanks for the video, excellent. My son is trying to set up a screen and encountered two problems - one his SanDisk micro SD is no longer working. It's not even being recognised and we've tried using a fix type Web page, but the keys that it says to delete are not there, so we're stumped. The other issue is a ribbon cable that won't go right into its port on the back of the screen fully. It's a Smartipi touch pro. Any help would be most welcome. From a frustrated mum.
@WagnersTechTalk3 ай бұрын
Thank you for watching! For the microSD card that isn't working, it could be defective or it may be a fake card. I've seem some branded cards that are fake and low quality (knock-offs). You can try re-formatting the card using SD Card formatter (here's how: wagnerstechtalk.com/common/#Format_SD_Card_SD_Card_Formatter - all data on the card will be wiped clean ). Then, try to re-image PiOS and see if that helps. If not, you could pickup another card locally from Wal*Mart, Best Buy, etc. I don't have the SmartiPi Touch Pro with a Pi 5 ( smarticase.com/products/smartipi-touch-pro ) and not seeing anything on Amazon ( amzn.to/3VSPhtg ) in the reviews that would indicate a problem with the cable not fitting. Looks like for the ribbon cable you just need to gently pull the black tab forward or up (hard to tell from the images) on the connector, insert the cable and bring the black tab back to lock it in place. Be careful with the black tabs on the connectors, they are very fragile.

I'm a total beginner and keep attempting to find a video that shows the different way to connect it to a display. One goal at some point is to create a looping video with a cheap display and some kind of board like this, but perhaps this Raspberry Pi is too valuable for this project - and I should use it for smarthome type projects. Thank you for any advice.
@WagnersTechTalk3 ай бұрын
I'm going to make some assumptions here, but it sounds like what you're wanting to do is loop some kind of advertisement (perhaps for a restaurant or kiosk type situation). In that case, you could create a .MP4 video file, download VLC (free), setup VLC to loop a video or playlist and run the video connected to any display you wish. You'll just need a microHDMI to standard HDMI cable going from the Pi5 to your display. Hope this helps!

Not sure I understand. A few things to try: Take the microSD that you imaged from the PC (in your USB adapter, I presume) and plug it into the microSD card slot on the Pi with the power turned off, then turn it on. Also, make sure you're connecting the microHDMI cable to the port nearest the USB-C (Power) port on the Pi5. One of those should help.

thank you for a great video! do you know how much electricity costs to run raspberry pi 5 for 24X7 for a month?
@WagnersTechTalk2 ай бұрын
Thank you! A little help from Windows copilot (AI). Double check everything please, it's just an estimate and utility costs vary: To estimate the average electricity cost for running a Raspberry Pi 5 24/7 for a month, we can use the following steps: Power Consumption: The Raspberry Pi 5 typically consumes around 5 watts when in use1. Energy Usage Calculation: Daily usage: ( 5 \text{ watts} \times 24 \text{ hours} = 120 \text{ watt-hours} ) or ( 0.12 \text{ kWh} ) Monthly usage: ( 0.12 \text{ kWh/day} \times 30 \text{ days} = 3.6 \text{ kWh} ) Electricity Cost: The average electricity cost in the U.S. is about $0.13 per kWh2. Monthly cost: ( 3.6 \text{ kWh} \times $0.13/\text{kWh} = $0.468 ) So, the average electricity cost for running a Raspberry Pi 5 24/7 for a month is approximately $0.47.

Hello All. I first thank the Wagner for this helpful video. I have a question for all. What do you think about the warnings some people mention about the problem of Raspberry Pi supply chain. Is it true or is it a fake ? Because, I plan to develop an IoT project on this board, and I will need 2000 units per year. So, if someone has news about this topic, I'll be really grateful. Anyway, many thanks to all. I wish a long life to Raspberry Pi.
@WagnersTechTalk9 ай бұрын
Thank you! There was indeed a time when Pi 4's were very hard (or expensive) to locate, for about 2 years. How that translates to Pi 5 supply chain is not something I know much about. I've heard from some other companies that indicate they'll have more products to ship towards the end of this month (Jan '24). But, that's not a concrete answer for you if you're looking at 2k units per year. If I find anything else out, I'll post back.

Thank you! I'm running docker in an Ubuntu VM in virtual box for an upcoming project. You don't necessarily need a Pi5 to do that, unless you want an always-on machine. You can also run what you're wanting on your current computer (most likely) along side your host operating system (i.e. Windows, MacOS, etc.). I released a guide+video last week on how to do this, if interested: wagnerstechtalk.com/vms . If you want a dedicated machine, you can also install Ubuntu here: wagnerstechtalk.com/rpi5/#Ubuntu_Desktop . In that video, I don't go into docker but of course you can add it.

@@WagnersTechTalk I do have a PC with lower configuration for some heavy tasks. But from power consumption perspective I chose raspberry pi. Is it worth to invest in pi 5 for above things?
@WagnersTechTalk6 ай бұрын
Either way will work, but if you have a decent PC, running in a VM is an option also. Just don't want you spending money if it's not necessary. Totally up to you and your needs.

Hi Wag I’m about to purchase my first raspberry pi and its accessories. Ok, so I’ve bought the: Official , 7 inch touchscreen. Raspberry Pi 5 The 300mm display adapter cable (x2) And then I just have a standard Logitech and mouse keyboard combo . What else if any do I need to get started other than a 32 or 64 gig SD card? Please advise
@WagnersTechTalk8 ай бұрын
A few things you may need (listed here: wagnerstechtalk.com/rpi5/#Accessories ): * Pi5 Power supply * Active Cooler * Case (See further below for an all-in-one kit from CanaKit - everything you'll need) * May need/want a card reader (see under 'General') * As you mentioned, a microSD card is needed (see under 'General' for some ideas)
@abzs58118 ай бұрын
Thanks for the swift reply 😮 Sorry forget to mention the power cable I have also the recommended 27 watt something like that lol I won’t bother with the case; as I find it ugly. Plus I’m going to mount it on the back of the touchscreen, so it’s gonna be practically invisible lol So that means I’ll be ready to go and start my Linux journey? Respect for that 🫡

Thanks for the vid John, can the Rasberry Pi be used instead of a full blown computer to run VPX via OTG on my Legends Pinball ?
@WagnersTechTalk10 ай бұрын
Unfortunately, no. Windows running on the Pi 4 was so-so, Pi 5 should be better but there isn't currently a build for the Pi 5. Even if there was, it's unlikely that it would play VPX well.

What’s a decent 24 or 27 inch monitor I can purchase for my raspberry pi?
@WagnersTechTalk6 ай бұрын
It depends, are you looking for HD or 4K? Curved or flat? What will you mainly be using it for (i.e. gaming, browsing, etc.)? What price range is acceptable? I can't answer without knowing a bit more of how you want to use it but I'll try to help as best I can.

Hey would you recommend me to install ubuntu or pios I'm a beginner and want to use it as a digital dashboard/ Kalender on a desktop firstly. And can I use an USB stick to install the system?
@WagnersTechTalk10 ай бұрын
This video will show you how to install PiOS Desktop from beginning to end. For Ubuntu, you can see this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iImyaXuHmtqor7c . Either operating system will be fine, you can also easily swap between the two if you have two microSD cards. Try both and see which one you prefer. Yes, you can use a USB stick instead if you prefer. Make sure it's a USB 3.0 stick for best performance and that you plug it into the blue ports.

If you want to use it for Retro Gaming grab a few extra microSD cards and check out Batocera or Recalbox. There are a number of things here that may be of interest to you. I clicked restart and it did its thing for a bit and now it is stuck on the white background with the keyboard and raspberry pi’s. What is going on??? Can I press the restart button in the back? I don’t know what to do!

Do you have another raspberry pi on your network with the same hostname? If so, shut it down/power it off and restart the new one. I've seen that happen before when you have two Pi's with the same hostname. Once it boots up, change the hostname to something different and you should be good to go.

@@WagnersTechTalk I do not have another Pi on my network but I have booted the pi and gone through the initial setup three times now. The first time everything worked great. Then the second and third time I booted it made me go through the initial setup again and I did try to use the same name host name both times so I will try using a different username/password. Used a couple of micro SD cards and a USB device as well to test if something was wrong. Any suggestion?@@WagnersTechTalk

@@fablapp Make sure you downloaded the right image, sounds to me like you may have tried a firmware update image for the Pi. I've had about 3 people tell me that, but none have told me what the issue turned out to be (or I missed it). Make sure the microHDMI is plugged into the port nearest the USB-C power input. Then, power on and see if that helps. If this doesn't fix it and you figure it out, please let me know because I've not had an issue and I'd love to know what the problem is.
