Wahoo has just announced their plans to release a Speedplay based based power meter this summer (2021), following their acquisition of Speedplay 18 months ago. This new dual-sided/dual-sending power meter will be branded the Wahoo POWRLINK ZERO (like PowerLink, but without a vowel, per Wahoo tradition).
In this video I dive into all the core questions you have, based on the limited information given to date. Here's your friendly chapters:

didn't the Garmin Vector pedals start in Speedplay pedals before Garmin bought the company. I think they used strain gauges in the hollow Speedplay axle with a pod on the crank held on by the spindle and pluged into the end of the spindle, I cannot remember if it was on the front or back of the cranks. Did Speedplay just resurrect this idea or does the pod surround strain gauges on the outside of the axle now?

I sure hope they have complete separate teams and resources working on those and on a hopefully rather sooner than later coming successor of the Roam. I would be happy for Speedplay fans if they can lay their hands on such a power meter and even more happy if that would successfully lead to an advance in the field and more diverse pedal systems (like, SPD or whatever) could profit from that one. But I much rather need a successor for my original Wahoo Elemnt and the Roam isn't what I have in mind for that (severe memory limitation and a somewhat dated feature set now that we have 2021 and not 2018 anymore).

IT would be *really* interesting if we found out that Wahoo licensed the technology in the Assioma pods, which is already well established. I mean, the pod looks nearly identical, and it would be difficult to believe that they didn't infringe on some patents putting a similar pod on a speedplay spindle. They will also be making the power pedals in custom spindle lengths but will be even longer wait, and custom spindles would not be upgradable to power pedals after the fact. So if you want custom length spindles it’s going to be a wait, and only in stainless.

While Wahoo could, I really don't think so. Speedplay was always a premium brand, and Wahoo a premium brand. And the updated pricing kills off discounting - which will further raise Speedplay pricing in the EU markets especially.

Similar to others - It looks like their licensing the pod from Favero as it seems identical and would make sense in terms of development. I have used Speedplay for years but recently on my tri bike moved to Favero for a power based solution. I'd be incredibly surprised if they're licensing the pod from Favero. Plus, there's been many pods over the years (Vector 1/2, Look/KEO, Polar Look/KEO, a few other failed attempts that never made it off the ground, etc...), round is simply the most logical design resultant.

One thing... there's a fundamental difference between a pedal and cleat based power meter. The direction of propulsion is always the same in a pedal spindle (once it's tightened), while on a cleat it varies continuously thru the pedal stroke: basically a hopeless calibration problem. So pedals are hard, cleats are an order of magnitude harder.

True, though in Barry's case, the issue was more manufacturing than design. It's the same issues that Vector faced for V1 that delayed it years. Also the same issue SRM faced with the X-Power, and others too. Getting yield to an acceptable level is crazy hard.

Because I’ve seen KZbin videos where they remove the road pedal from the spindle and replace it with the appropriate mtb pedal to create an mtb or gravel power meter pedal. That means the pod must have all the measuring devices and the pedal itself has nothing in it.

It seems like an easy and obvious adjustment. I’m sure they’re already on it. The Favero pods are an amazingly reliable solution. I wouldn’t mind if they used them instead of trying to reinvent the wheel but we’ll see how they solve it.

@@rcg9573 Right? I’m trying to go to Collegiate Nats in the USA. Some people act like they got screwed because the power pedals weren’t released yet but AFAIK affordable power pedals have been out for years and Wahoo didn’t announce them until last week. It’s not like ppl were planning on getting them. Tldr: The demand people place on industry is just unrealistic at times, and the people placing it don’t really “need” the product anyway.

I experienced constant head unit drop out, insane power spikes, battery drainage and to top it all of terrible customer support. I sold them very quickly. I’m sure the most recent versions are improved but I certainly won’t go near a Garmin PM again. Faultless Quarqs on 3 of my bikes now, probably won’t run anything else.

It’s 2021. There’s no serious reason any non sponsored amateur needs a power meter to effectively train. World class riders trained perfectly fine for decades without power meters or a gazillion other electronic gadgets hanging off their bikes. The notion that an amateur needs a power meter to train effectively is simply goofballs with little common sense looking to imitate sponsored pros. Same thing they do with multi thousand dollar carbon wheels. It’s all about the desire of silly amateurs to imitate pros, and the bike industry sells them the Koolaid that they need it. 😆
