Leif is the main character in Fire Emblem Thracia 776, and he's both underrated and overrated. Let's talk about why.

Maybe a video about the thief class in general, and why games with better thieves like Thracia and PoR/RD grant a lot of player agency and result in a lot of fun! While thieves that are walking lockpicks like in Awakening and beyond are pretty dull and uninteresting!

@TJRoy Baker Stealing great weapons is a side objective that just isn't around in modern FE titles. In games where you can't steal, they are just another unit. Utility units are so much more than a ball of stats! And utility units have been replaced, by balls of stats. I think Thracia is one of the best FE titles because of the amount of player agency and freedom that you get when it comes to what you're allowed to do. We got stealing back in a diminished state in Three Houses, but it's so rare that there's stuff you can steal in that game.

Thus far, I've only used him in Genealogy but I really liked him there. It's funny but now when I think about Leif, I actually remember him for a completely different reason dear to my heart. Once, I actually told my younger sister that she was the Leif to my Altenna, and that I inherited the family's major holy blood while she only inherited minor holy blood. It was just a joke because I'm the older sister, but then I was afraid she would be sad. But then she surprised me and made Leif into her profile picture on her phone and embraced it! Every time we text or call each other, I see the Leif as her profile picture and it makes me smile xD so thank you Leif for making my sister happy.

The Reginleif has the same properties as the Rapier, but on a lance, so it has higher Might, and therefore the effective damage gets multiplied even further. Add in that Ephiram already has solid bases and growths and can use javelins, and you have a really strong early combat unit. His only real problem is that his promotion is a little later than you'd probably like.

Ah Leif, his alt on Heroes made me play Genealogy, and now Thracia because I wanted to know why he sounds more happy than his normal form. Eventually I gonna finish Thracia when I get more lucky and less angry. He has been pretty good to me and I didn't even know he has bad growths, bless that move increase on Manster. I feel because of the game he can be useful, Eliwood and Lyn would love to have that type of help with leadership stars for example.

Yeah, Leif looks terrible on paper but a lot of the game's systems and gameplay designs favour him, which is why he ends up being very useful through the whole game, even though his "role" in gameplay is constantly shifting and he's rarely the best unit you have. Meanwhile lords like Eliwood and Lyn, as you said, have really nothing to contribute almost all of the time.

In regards to his underwhelming promotion, there are actually graphics for the Master Knight class, his FE4 promotion, in the game’s files, but despite the fact that it would turn him into the absolute killing machine that every player, myself included, expects, he just gets the very average Prince class, so what gives? Him promoting to MK in FE5 only to return as a Prince in FE4 wouldn’t be that weird, considering Thracia 776 already has different interpretations of how the main plot went (besides, Nanna can still promote in this game only to later return as a Troubadour). On hindsight, however, it kind of fits the game; one of the themes of the game seems to be the many uphill struggles, and having him becoming OP as soon as he reconquers his homeland would sort of break that, after all, he STILL has to defend said homeland and STILL needs to end the church ‘s influence, he took a big step, but it’s still only one, but what the promotion signifies is that he’s not going to let anyone take what he’s achieved away from him, even if he’s still just a kid going up against an empire.
@l.n.3372
@l.n.3372 4 жыл бұрын
Maybe it's just me, but I kinda like that he goes from Lord to prince to master knight overall, and FE5 shows his struggle as Lord and prince before his promotion to master knight in FE4. It's a nice full perspective.

Leif has climbed to be one of my favorite characters as well after playing Genealogy and Thracia. It sucks that lot of forums / discussions rated him so poorly due to his stats when in reality I found him to be one of the best in defense chapters like 14 and 20. While it’s true there’s a big cast of really good sword characters in Thracia, I always find Leif just good enough to reliably get the job done when I needed him the most. Definitely an interesting lord for waifu.

Ah yes, Leif Faris Claus. I really like Leif, both personality and design wise. Gameplay wise, he also has one of the best designs, in fact hes probably my favourite Lord gameplay wise. He is not an OP killing machine like Sigurd, but hes also way better then someone like Roy or Lyn. His utility with Light brand, especially in the Manster arc and earlygame is really nice, reliable 1-2 range chip is always good to have. And his other utility are his supports. He supports units like Asbel, so its always useful to have him around. Something I like to do with hime after promo, is give him a bunch of scrolls and a few level ups, since his exp gain is so high after promo. He becomes a really strong combat unit as well if you do that. Leif is overall a really balanced Lord, and thats why I like him so much. I dont really like the direction IS is taking with Lords recently ( usually being amongst the best units in the game ) and Id like to see a Lord more similar to Leif again, tho I kinda doubt that will happen.

@@funninoriginal6054 Roy's combat utility is overhated, in the earlygame he gets 2 hit killed by generuc fighters, but every earlygame unit you get besides Marcus and Dieck can't really take a hit well, he also uses sword which are very good in FE6 since there are a lot of axe users and javelins and handaxes suck, while his growths aren't amazing, by FE6 standards they're quite high and his bases aren't really bad when you consider he joins in chapter 1, this is also not accounting for the bindimg blade since that thing is already famous for it's absurd power. Roy is also really easy to fix , just have him.promote at chapter 13 or 14 and he becomes a perfectly decent unit

In seriousness, Leif actually is a great candidate for statboosters. It's for kind of the same reason that you give Speedwings to Haar, not Mia; most of the good units in Thracia are people like Orsin, Dagdar, Asvel, or Fergus, who don't need statboosters to kick ass left and right. It's better to funnel them into Leif so he can be as good as his buddies, since he's always around.

When I played Thracia the first time, I really wanted to hate Leif for his awful bases, default weapons slowing him down and how he seemed like a second Roy. But it became apparent very quickly that he wasn't as bad. His bases look absolutely awful but that is also contributed to the all 20 caps of Thracia for promotions included. You hardly see stats below 5 (unless defense for magic users or res for physical units) in other games but in Thracia, you also hardly see enemies with reasonable defense or 4 AS prior to Manster so that's not an issue. His 22 HP and 3 defense are also beefier than they look as enemies have ~10 attack in the first chapter, which allow him to take 2-3 hits before dying, which is a major improvement to Roy's 1 hit he can take in hard mode. The light brand is just beyond useful and exactly what weakly lords need, definitely the best early game weapon for any lord in any FE. His Manster performance is what really sets Leif apart in my perspective. Even without boosters, his states are on par and mostly slightly better than Fergus' or Brighton's but with much more HP thanks to his good growth in this department. The difference is noticable and he is a unit to fall back on for more difficult fights. He may have a higher level but that doesn't matter when the more difficult chapters of the game requires the player to rely on the units' bases. There simply isn't time to train the other units unless one lames out the reinforcements. Despite his stats, he can still handle himself later, has more move than other infantry lords, has supports, his light brand... and doesn't promote in the very last chapter of the game where he gets an amazing weapon to kill very weak 1 range locked enemies and bosses that are beyond simple. He is not amazing by any means and would probably place him somewhere in the middle of the unit roster but he is not a bad lord by any means.

honestly the light brand makes me consider him one of the best lords combat wise. in general, early-midgame fire emblem is harder than the very end, and when other lords finally get their promotion your army is filled with super soldiers anyways. the light brand lets leif do so much as a unit, it lets him deal with early game enemies with low res extremely easily and the 1-2 range makes him strong on both player and enemy phase

Roy has the easiest time out of any Lord in the series, always makes the right decision (even when it's a questionable one), is already blessed with perfect strategy and only needs an 'CONGRATS YOU WIN THE GAME' sword, is a child prodigy with the correct modern opinions on race and class politics, has everyone sucking off his Big Brane, and has fucking Merlinus to talk to. @l.n.3372
@l.n.3372 4 жыл бұрын
The thing about Ashe is that he's good in BL but he's not worth training on the other routes. Because he leaves your party in verdant wind and silver snow, he'll fall behind your team until you get him back at the valley of torment. This doesn't happen on azure moon obviously, so he's in the best position to be useful. In crimson flower, he's fine but you already have Petra and Bernadetta with bows, plus Ferdinand and Edelgard with axes. But on Blue Lions, his talent for axe and bows makes him prime to become a bow wyvern, especially with Lance hidden talent. People who say 'oh it's just an inferior Claude' are really annoying because if a build works, then why not have multiple sets? Would you really only have 1 wyvern on your team, or 1 cavalier in a GBA FE game? Wyvern rider/wyvern Lord is good for a reason, and any male unit with a preference for axes can make good use of the set up, especially if they also favor bows. There's just no downside on BL especially when Claude isn't even available anyway. On maddening BL, I used wyvern Sylvain, Ashe and Ingrid along with falcon knight Byleth: all 4 were fliers and I also got them to C or B rank bows as well. Since Claude is never available in Blue Lions, there's really no argument about him since he's not an option. And although Ashe is slower than Ingrid and isn't as strong as Sylvain, why not have 3 good units with great availability? I also threw in Petra and Seteth when necessary too.

They already use axe and Lance so why not add flying? If you have a wyvern Ashe, Sylvain and Ingrid on a Blue Lions run, then why do you really need Cyril? Especially when you'll just get Seteth soon afterwards and you can even recruit Petra as well. Bernadetta is IMO a better falcon knight on any non Black Eagles route simply because she starts with a high Lance rank and she's weak in axes. But with Ashe in Blue Lions, there's not much reason to not use his availability. Especially since Bernadetta is basically the same unit but with less availability on a BL run. The ONLY route where I would potentially consider Cyril is Golden Deer because even if Claude, Hilda are wyvern but you could always use an early game 3rd wyvern too. I typically make Leonie into a falcon knight, but if you wanted wyvern Leonie, then once again Cyril is competing against 3 others and he's less valuable if you've been training those 3 from the start. His ONLY utility is point blank volley, and so many people including myself have beaten maddening without him. So he's not necessary. On silver snow, Cyril joins far too late and I highly doubt anybody recommend him there.
@XEmiyaArcherX
@XEmiyaArcherX 4 жыл бұрын
@@l.n.3372 Because Cyril has better Growths, a strength in bow, lance, axe AND flying which is btw the hardest skill to level for males which makes it a huge plus for him over Ashe. Cyril is not necessary to beat maddening he's just 10 times more helpfull than ashe in it, so why use ashe? Cyril can one round enemys from his starting chapter with point blank volley, something Ashe will struggle to do for the entire game, he can double and reliably kill mega fast assassins/brawalers, something the best units in the game sometimes struggle to do and Ashe couldn't even dream of trying. You can beat the game with any characters really, but some are simply waay better than others, and Cyril completly shadows Ashe, similarly Claude compeltly shadows Cyril(and every single other unit in the game tbh) which is why GD is actually Cyril's worst route(besides CF obviously) cause it has the best flying starters, that said more Wyvern riders is never a bad thing, Ashe is jsut one of the worst one you can go for in any route. even in BL, Sylvian, Cyril , Ingrid and Seteth are just easier to train/ teach and just all around better units in every way. it's a shame cause I like Ashe the character.

I know that in the past you've said that Three Houses characters are hard to evaluate due to the nature of the game. However, there is one pre-promote who has a more traditional join time and is often overshadowed by the members of your army that you've already spent so long developing. I'm making reference to Gilbert in the Blue Lions Route. He joins immediately post time skip during the Chasing Daybreak mission and is largely under shadowed in the academy arc. The only impression the player has of him is most likely sacrificing him during the Miklan Mission where he appeared as a green unit to soak up the reinforcements. Since most players have already trained students, other professors, and/or Cyril/Flayn it's hard to insert him into your roster. However, I've made an effort to use him on my more recent maddening runs and had a similar experience that you had with Ronan. I tried out multiple class options such as the War Master or his seemingly natural role as a Great Knight to make use of his adjutant capabilities, but to my surprise, there was a better option. His utility as a bow knight worked for me personally to use as a Swiss Army knife unit. He could use his respectable authority rank to command helpful battalions, he could shove to reposition units in a timely manner, and he could land long snipes on an enemy before using canto to reach a safe distance (albeit that's a benefit of the class, not him), all the while still being able to reliably frontline in any role due to his well-above-average base defense usually rivaled only by Dimitri. As far as stat boosters on my end come, I supplied him with some dexterity in order to help his general accuracy, and I also delegated him to use the Failnaught simply because I felt like experimenting, though I never truly relied on it as an option. This analysis, of course, comes with some personal bias based on my own experiences, but I've tried to highlight his reason for being underrated, some benefits he presents as a unit, and my own attempts at maxing his utility without overly relying on stat boosters. Sorry to make a whole essay on one unit, but I feel like it would be an interesting case to observe a more traditional pre-promote finding place in Three Houses' differentiated gameplay.

I've heard he's actually really really good as a Wyvern Lord, and it's a pretty easy class to get him in too. Biggest boon is that it salvages his rock-bottom speed stat, since Wyvern Lords have a base of 20 speed.

I recently got done with Thracia, and I have to say that, having played more than half the games in the series, Leif compares pretty well to most other lords. He's never a complete liability (looking at you, level 15 Roy with 8 spd), and he can always contribute in some meaningful way. He's a strange unit who ends up being a jack of all trades, but master of none. I believe he is the best candidate for a majority of your rings, as the rings enable him to be fairly competent in combat just outside the front lines, even though he will never perform better than your best units imo. His late promotion does hurt, but as mekkah has always said, Thracia's enemies are fairly weak, so he has no problem taking on soldiers or brigands even much later into the game. I like Leif a lot, as a unit and as a character, and his development over the course of the game, which I think is a little rushed, is well deserved for someone who goes through the amount of tragedy and brutality that Leif does. Glad to see a Thracia WAIFU on the channel. I'd like to see either a WAIFU on Altena from FE4 next or Noah from FE6.

Roy should usually have way more speed at level 15, you probably got RNG screwed. Anyway the main reason why Leif is good is because Thracia is balanced in a way that makes Leif decent in general despite his low growths and bases, for some other lords like Roy or Lyn, you'd need to rebalance the game in such a way that would make them work and I think IS has shown how they aren't great at balance already with 3H

The contrast with Roy is staggering. Roy has an in-story reason to be weak, and is valued more for his leadership skills than his fighting skills, but he lacks any true ability to be a supporting unit beyond the support system (which everyone has some access to), and because of how poorly written FE6's story is, rather than coming across as a skilled leader, he just comes across as a Gary Stu plotwise. While I haven't played Thracia yet, Leif sounds like Roy done correctly, while he's not a combat monster, his leadership is a constant boon for the army, aiding them in moment-to-moment combat as well as in the long term. It also sounds like Roy's arc of becoming a stronger leader and warrior is done correctly as well, since it sounds like Leif becomes a decent combat unit gradually, whereas Roy is bad at fighting until he gets the Binding Blade, which is so OP it single handedly makes him a decent combat unit. I imagine Leif is probably a better character than Roy too, being the protagonist of one of the darkest games in the series has to count for something right?
@misterbadguy7325
@misterbadguy7325 4 жыл бұрын
Really, part of it is that Roy isn't so much meant to be Leif as he is meant to be Marth. People compare Roy and Leif a lot because they're both considered kind of underwhelming, but in terms of their bases, growths, weapons, and overall design, Binding Blade Roy and Mystery of the Emblem Marth are bordering on identical, which is fitting when Binding Blade's plot is pretty clearly a pseudo-remake of Mystery. The difference actually comes down to the entire rest of the game. In Mystery of the Emblem, enemy units are pretty dang anemic, so a unit with Roy's bases and growths can get a whole lot done, especially when there's a lot of cavs and armors and no weapon triangle, and lack of a promotion doesn't really matter because all stats cap at 20, so the ceiling of unit power is pretty low. In Binding Blade, even well-trained units tend to struggle with one-rounding or two-rounding enemies, even on Normal, so Roy's stats stand out a lot. I feel like he actually was meant to be a decent combat unit but they badly overestimated his strength; Binding Blade has a lot of cases of weirdly unbalanced design like that. In story terms, yeah, you're about right. The big thing separating the two is that Leif fucks up. Like, a lot. Multiple entire arcs come out of the fact that he's so reckless and determined that he rushes right into traps or makes a terrible decision in haste. And the lack of supports means that while Roy does have a pretty interesting character, it's mostly left to conversations that might as well be Easter eggs, while Leif's personality is on display for the whole thing. I wouldn't really say FE6's story is poorly written, so much as that it was a case of not really knowing how to make the support system work yet. The gameplay loop feels really obvious in hindsight; the story is basic on the first go, but when you start figuring out that people can talk to each other, you learn all kinds of little details about the world and characters, and how they relate to each other or see things, and you learn that the world of Elibe is actually fairly deep and intricate. But the problem was that finding those conversations was so tedious that nobody really bothered, so you're left with a story that just feels like Books 1 and 2 of Mystery kludged together with a few moderately clever plot twists--and even then, supports are really more a showcase of character than a true development arc. Roy has an interesting personality... but he doesn't really have an arc.

Leif is honestly a decent combat unit from start to finish, he's always good in my opinion (especially when stat caps are so low in Thracia that even your worst units can easily contribute vs really low base stat enemies) due to variety of factors Mekkah mentioned. There's also a case of variety of fantastic weapons you always have access to to help deal with so many situations. Most of Thracia's difficult has always been just knowing how to deal with overwhelming enemy numbers and planning for unexpected surprises (some are pretty bs on first playthrough, like the teleport puzzle ones that you can't escape from by normal means).

That's all I wanna say for feedback on this one. As most times, loved the video Mekkah :D, keep it up!

How about doing a WAIFU on Ephraim? He is one of my favorite Lords in the series, but I don't know if it's just bias or if he's actually a good unit. Edit: For all of the people that say that he's good, well, my question was more leaning on him being overhyped.

Ephraim is pretty dang good, with amazing bases and growths and 1-2 range access at all times. He has a great affinity with a good support pool that he also supports fast with (Duessal, Tana, Kyle are all great and the rest arent outright terrible). His only real flaws are an ok Res stat and footlocked, and his promotion fixes that (I think he gets +5 Res or so on promotion, wtf). But due to route options his availability definitely varies. I would love to hear a critical analysis on him.

Adding to that his other personal weapon, the Reginleif, which is basically the wing spear, on a game with x3 effectiveness; despite being unable to be forged and being on a foot unit, it still is pretty baller, and one of the weapons I'd hammerne other than a warp staff, even if hors eunits diminish as the game goes along

I don't think anyone would accuse Ephraim of being bad, since he starts off with good bases and ends the game with good stats every time. He's just consistently excellent. A lot of people are afraid of Ephraim route for some reason but I prefer it!

Eaphrim is pretty much an early combat God, that destroys waves of enemys easely and has the Reignelief which invalidates half of the enemys in FE8. He's only really held back by his late promotion which makes him unable to gain EXP when he reaches level 20 (which he will usually reach no problem) and footlock which hurts a lot in a game with big maps like FE8 ( just because they're not FE4 big doesn't mean they're small). All of these issues are fixed by his promotion and his second personal weapon gives him extra strenght and allows him to one round almost every enemy in FE8. His main problem is that FE8 is already pretty easy and his combat isn't really that special compared to Seth, Franz and so on, not to mention his weird availability, but still Eaphrim is an excelent lord and definetely worth using

Ephiram is overhyped, but he does what he's supposed to, basically. The summary of him basically boils down to "combat god who's footlocked for a while."

I feel like you could make a waifu about nearly any thracia character, because they are so unique and nuanced with their small little perks. I'd really like to see a waifu on knoll from sacred stones. I think there is much to talk about with that whole summoning thing and the 0 luck xD also, I like him

Hey Mekkah I don’t remember if you’ve talked about him but I would love if you did one of these on Kliff from FE echoes. I’d like my argument of this character being good justified or my eyes opened to his flaws. Great video!

What I think Leif is good: -Perfect availability: He's always there like it or not. Other units even if they stay with you for most of the game, they will get fatigue and off for a few chapters. -Decent personal weapon: With good range, 60 uses, and can be use as an Elixir. That's mean it's very useful. -Tons of supports: He can just standing near some unit and they gain bonus. Also, have support star for just being around doing nothing. Good candidate for Kingmaker sword. -He have room for improvement: You can still growth boost him with scrolls, spare him some skill books if no one else need. In the end, he will turn out decent even if he's not the best fighter. What people think he's bad: -Low base and growth: This is fixable thanks to scroll and stats boosters. -Sword only: Not too bad because his arsenal can still make up for the lacks of weapon types. -Bad promotion bonus: Not the end of the day even if he can't max any stats. -Low movement: Just get to the point without wasting movement and you will be fine. Overall, I would give him 8/10: His strength come from making other units fight better while being around to give some fighting effort. He's not meant to be the best fighter, racer, or healer or anything. He's meant to be a leader, in fact, I think he's one of the most supportive lord in the series. After all, it's like Mekka said, a unit is not all about how well they fight, it's about how much they can contribute to your victory.

I kind of understand people giving Leif shit for his bad promotion bonus, even if it comes with effectively Super Paragon. Thracia has some of the most busted promotion bonuses in the series and Leif doesn't even get a single point of move. I love Leif as a character and a unit, but man, did Kaga do my boy dirty there.

7:23 Can someone explain to me how *Big Tinks* and _It’s Over Anakin! I Have The High Ground_ are mediocre units? The utilization of -dogs- lances on indoor maps is underrated, at least that’s what Chaz says...methinks iirc.
@Regdren
@Regdren 4 жыл бұрын
It's nice to have access to good lances if you have them, but the weapon triangle is only 5 hit/avoid iirc. That makes them a lot less necessary than they usually are.
@DD151
@DD151 4 жыл бұрын
What lances would you use indoors over a similar or higher ranked axe? Both Dalshin and Xavier would have a much higher axe rank. Chaz is a funny dude with a lot of charisma, but his gameplay opinions are hella suspect sometimes.

@@DD151 being able to use inventory that would normally be useless endgame is the idea. Either way, i find its the better hitrate while building towards D rank that makes them worth. lances have 5% more hit over axes overall not just WT. If there's a choice between iron lance or iron axe im going lances. The option to use higher ranked axes is always there and that's great, but when it's not needed why not work towards javelins/killer lances?
@DD151
@DD151 4 жыл бұрын
@@Choops6969 I don't disagree that given a commitment to iron weaponry, then Iron Lances are slightly better. But that's not part of the premise: Iron Lances are competing with Master Axes and the like; I could just slap a Master Axe on Xavier and call it a day. The guy whose thread we are commenting in seems to imply in his question, why are Dalshin and Xavier considered mediocre if they can use lances indoors? To which the answer is, quite rightly, that lances offer barely any utility over axes (Master Lance also has the same hit as Master Axe). If you're going to grind a low weapon rank, pick swords; they have more accurate and fun stuff. Maybe this was not the impression that you had wanted to leave when you first made a passing comment elsewhere on lance use in indoor maps, I don't know, I can't read minds. But generals using lances in FE5 or some variant thereof has been a pitfall since before I first started playing FE in the Ice Age. On the specific subject of "when higher ranked axes are not needed," it's been awhile since I've played FE5 truly casually, but I can't remember the last time I seriously used an iron weapon after, like, chapter 8, except for on a faceless generic or something.
@Choops6969
@Choops6969 4 жыл бұрын
@@DD151 I've thought about focusing on swords, but once again, for the last chapters I've got tons of javs and killer lances not being used at all and my axe/sword inventory being spread across everyone. The point is I can give that axe to someone else who has less options available to them. Also 2 range swords isn't going to be available till B rank, which is not going to happen. I'm not even sure what the OP is referring to tbh, he seems to be memeing. I'm responding to you asking the question "What lances would you use indoors over a similar or higher ranked axe?" The answer is: ones that have higher hit, greater availability, train towards more weapon options and get the job done either way. I figure that if you think that my opinions have some sort of agenda behind them- that's what i assume "hella suspect" means, the best thing to do is to give my thoughts behind them.
