The iPhone 14 is essentially the M2 MacBook Air equivalent in the iPhone lineup. It’s a good phone, but it’s sandwiched between the iPhone 13/13 mini which for their prices are actually quite good for their value, and the iPhone 14 Plus which is the least expensive 6.7” iPhone Apple has ever made. The only real compelling reasons to go for the regular 14 is for the slightly better camera system and the colors which tbh aren’t as good as last year’s colors imo

The iPhone 14 seems like it has more than originally thought in terms of upgrades, but it’s still the smallest upgrade in a long time. A few people might be able justify the camera upgrade, maybe a few more that also would enjoy the extra gpu core. I wouldn’t say don’t buy it, but I would say that 80-90% of people considering it should get the 13 instead. Heavily depends on how much you value camera features. I'm interested to see camera tests in various conditions. The normal 'main' camera is wider at 24mm, and the lens slower (less light) as ƒ/1.78 (they really didn't want to have to say ƒ/1.8, did they?) vs the faster ƒ/1.5 of iPhone 14/14 Plus base models, or even ƒ/1.6 of iPhone 13 series. iPhone 13 series and base iPhone 14 are both a little tighter / more zoomed in (my preference) at 26mm, and have optically faster lenses. These are the compromises required to get that larger sensor in there which as they admit most of the time a group of 4 pixels are combined to gather more light so 48 divided by 4 is 12 - yep 12 MP - unless you're in great light and using ProRAW which at that point I'll just use my Fuji X-T4. Don't get me wrong - I love iPhone photography and I do trust Apple to make sensible design choices, but as someone familiar with what the specs mean there are a few red flags or warning size that the Pro camera may not be the huge upgrade people will assume it is. Thoughts?
@valtterim62692 жыл бұрын
It is tricky to compare sensor specs. The sensor is even bigger this year, so the f1.78 of this new sensor doesn't mean it would be same as an f1.78 lense on the 13 Pro let alone the 13 or 12. When pixel-binned, the pixels are much bigger this year: 1.9μm vs 2.44μm.

Apple removing the SIM card tray is a significant privacy and security concern. I understand the major US phone carriers are pushing it, but for Apple, a company that says they care about our privacy, this is a big issue. While I wasn't considering upgrading this year, this will definitely be a factor when I do decide to upgrade my iPhone.

Hey Luke, can you do a video addressing the eSIM only thing? As someone who goes from Android to iOS and back quite often, I really appreciate a physical SIM card. For this reason alone, I will be looking for a used 13 pro MAX and will be skipping the 14 line all together. I know this is only going to work for me right now and I will soon have no choice, but since they already offer a physical AND eSIM in their phones, their "It it safer and your SIM card can't be stolen" ideology only holds water if someone is in fact, using a physical SIM.

I seriously doubt apple would do all that work with the software for the pro models, to do something entirely new with the next model. Whatever design changes come next year I think the “dynamic island” will stick around for a while.

Don't forget Apple is actually 70% through the iPhone 15 design process right now. They are probably close to feature lockdown and design lock down and getting ready for manufacturing assessments. Tooling takes at least twelve months to develop and test for production.

First I would go Pro for the OLED display which is why I moved to the iPhone 11 Pro. Nice to be able to see the screen when I am out walking around, and in sunlight. When it comes to eSIM I am going to have to check with my carrier to see how this would work for me if I need to move to a backup iPhone. A few years back I dropped, and killed my iPhone to a point it would no power up. I was lucky in that I still had my previous iPhone so all I did was pop out the SIM, and move it to my old iPhone and I was back up and running until I could get my newer iPhone repaired. Need to see how hard this is going to be if I have a new iPhone that only supports eSIM. Is there a KISS way to move my phone number/eSIM to a backup iPhone? For now sticking with my iPhone 11 Pro with A13 154.9 GFLOPS supercomputer in my pocket until Apple comes out with an iPhone that has a USB Type C connector that I hope is either USB4 40, or USB4 80.

I think the 14 pro series is the only new phone out of the lineup that should even be considered. if you are looking at a 14 just save the money and buy a 13 or get a 13 pro max used. for 750-850 you could get a 13 pro max with the same a15 as the 14 plus but you have a 3rd camera, pro motion, and pro raw photo and video. no reason to even look at the 14 series unless its one of the pro models
@asdf515012 жыл бұрын
I have a ‘12 Pro Max that works great and the camera is easily good enough for me. I’m not a “content creator” so getting the best one isn’t necessarily a wise idea for me. Now, the crew that films the cooking show Pioneer Woman, they film that whole show with iPhones on gimbals and whatnot? I think that’s awesome! But it doesn’t apply to me personally and while the upgrade would benefit those folks, but not me so much.
@christopher68952 жыл бұрын
Tbh, I think it's a great idea to avoid the major redesign years. They tend to have the most issues with the phones. The 14 pro should be an incredibly reliable device given the form factor has been more or less perfected over the past few years.

Great video Luke. Do you think upgrading from the iPhone 12 Pro Max makes sense? I am tempted to upgrade, as my battery is fatigued and I like the 14 Pro Max's increased brightness, 120 pro motion display, much improved camera system and Dynamic Island which puts the notich to good use. While I am seeing plenty of upgrade recommendations for the iPhone 11 and earlier models, as well as comments that it may not b e worth upgrading from the iPhone 13 Pro line, I am not seeing much on whether it makes sense to upgrade from the 12 Pro. Maybe that model is the tweener for upgrading.

Wow, here in Germany the cheapest iPhone starts now at 999 Euros this year. What I can get for 799 is... an iPhone 12 🤔 Asking for such high prices in the middle of an inflation caused by the Ukraine war will really hurt sales here in europe I believe. Just hope that Apple doesn't decide to discontinue the Plus model just like the mini because sale expectations weren't met 😂 I think Apple is really in some kind of innovation-crisis. The dynamic island feature should have gone to all models, not just the pros. But they obviously had nothing special for the pros to justify their existence, so regular models have to wait one year.
@MikeKobela2 жыл бұрын
Sadly, that's just where the Euro is at now and with how much it tanked this year, plus the taxes which are included in the European prices. Apple's just adjusting.
@Silicon_Magic2 жыл бұрын
@@MikeKobela Unfortunatelly we've already seen substantial differences last year before all that, but this year it's even worse. If they'd be adjusting to the market, they should actually lower the prices. There are no increased costs for them (like higher import fees), but the customers have less money on their hands.
@calraade57842 жыл бұрын
Inflation can not solely be blamed on the war. Shutting society down has a big roll to play in this, not to mention green ideologies for “cleaner future" at the expense of living standards
@Silicon_Magic2 жыл бұрын
@Phillip Banes In that case it would be a miracle that they were able to keep the price stable in the US. Don't get me wrong, I understand it's their core market and has priority, but the US and european market really drift apart more and more making Apple products far less attractive here than they used to be.
@Silicon_Magic2 жыл бұрын
@Phillip Banes Well, that's the beautiful thing about being a customer. You don't have to care for reasons. Whether it's inflation or greed, if the price is to high, you don't buy. Just as Apple has to decide, if they earn a few billions less or lose market share in those regions in the long run...

I'm coming from the Pixel 6 Pro. I like this phone but most of my friends have the iPhone. I lose a sort of connection with my buddies bc then they have to go out of their way to download another app to have a group chat just for me. So I'm wanting to get an iPhone now and see the difference. Pro Max for sure, just figuring out if I should invest in the 13 or the 14. I'm also wanting the usb-c eventually and I think they are coming out with it for the 15. What's the smartest way to spend my money if that's my goal?
@TheStopwatchGod2 жыл бұрын
I have an iPhone 11 Pro, and will upgrade to the iPhone 15 Pro Max next year because of the addition of USB-C. It means a huge number of USB-C accessories are now available for use. Besides, I'm spending a good chunk of money on building my gaming PC, so not a lot of money is left over. However I think the iPhone 14 Pro is a great upgrade, the regular 14, not so much (gross understatement)

New Apple iPhones have hit that diminishing returns phase- just incremental/iterative feature enhancements, nothing IMO compelling to upgrade. That’s why no one lines up outside their stores anymore. I only watched the event hoping for a new M2 Mac Pro😊
@bluetech28092 жыл бұрын
I feel like they hit that point around iPhone 12. I'm not surprised but it's funny how they insist on using silly names for features that are not "new" at all. "Dynamic Island" for a cut out camera notch, "ProMotion" for 120 hz display lol. Their software is great, I'll give them that and the Apple silicon itself is top class. Everything is garbage, though.

Well, most people don’t upgrade every year, so it’s not “incremental” for them. These days, it’s not even every two years to go along with carrier subsidy. Many iPhone customers use an iPhone for at least three years. My iPhone is a 2016 iPhone SE, working great for my needs after new DIY battery. I’m getting the 2022 iPhone SE soon. It’s the least expensive choice, but it has A15 like iPhone 14, and it’ll be a BIG upgrade.
@Fear.of.the.Dark.2 жыл бұрын
what else do you expect from phones these days? There is nothing much more to squeeze out. And Apple designs phones to last 3 to 4 years of usage with regular software updates. That is their main intent.
