It is if you look in the right places, twitter as a platform doesn't suddenly make people more toxic, if there's toxic discussion to be had then people will have it, 've seen the same aruguments on youtube, twitter, tumblr, reddit, etc, bluesky wont escape it, there's just a down period in the fanbase right now since it's inbetween games. when the next PM game comes out and it's either like OK or like TTYD it'll spring back up
@Miccat874 күн бұрын
Well, I hope things continue to stay that way in the foreseeable future, because if I have to see someone say that fans of the classic Paper Mario games are just nostalgia blind one more time, I'm gonna lose my mind. Likewise, nobody should be shamed if they legitimately enjoy the modern Paper Mario games.
@ranpan60824 күн бұрын
I feel like a lot of the toxicity could've been avoided if people just agreed to disagree and moved on. Some of the critics could be so obnoxious and it would make the supporters more defensive. I know it was hard, especially given the interview made classic fans lose hope of the series ever returning. But it just made civil discussions pretty much impossible. It didn't help that some were trying to push this narrative that Nintendo despised the classic games. It didn't help that we had a certain toxic person wishing horrible things on the developers and telling people that disagreed with them to self delete.

I am worried things could go right back to square one whenever Paper Mario 7 is announced. That game will need to find the perfect balance to satisfy people on both sides of the fanbase.
@Miccat874 күн бұрын
Exactly. I think trying to satisfy both sides of the Paper Mario fanbase should be a top priority with Paper Mario 7.
@wootmasterzorsx4 күн бұрын
For my money, all Paper Mario 7 needs to do to satisfy me as a classic Paper Mario fan is have unique character designs (bonus points if they can build off existing character designs) including a set of partners and possibly a battle system that builds off what TTYD and 64 did. The latter isn’t even a requirement, just so long as battles feel like they have purpose. Otherwise, take whatever you want from Origami King- have some system where you fill in the world, more overt paper theming, very much would love world design that is like Origami King’s, some alternate battle style like the Paper Macho fights could be fun… I feel like the characters (and story they bring) are the most important thing for classic Paper Mario, considering Super felt right in line with 64 and TTYD. A battle system that builds off and innovates what the first two did is very much wanted, but so long as the heart and soul of Paper Mario are there, I’m not super picky.

@ Paper Mario 64- 1 Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door- 2 Super Paper Mario- 3 Paper Mario Sticker Star- 4 Paper Mario Color Splash- 5 Paper Mario The Origami King- 6 If you’re counting Mario and Luigi Paper Jam, then yes, it’s 7. I personally don’t count that as a Paper Mario game; it’s a game Paper Mario is IN, but not a game from the Paper Mario series, as far as I’m concerned. The game was heavily weighed towards the Mario and Luigi side of the crossover, as for the why. But yes, if we are including Paper Jam, which I’m not opposed to doing, it’s 8 we’re waiting on.
@FoxVidz20004 күн бұрын
@@wootmasterzorsx Happy to hear that you aren't opposed. Even so, to further support my stance, allow me to add why I'll always count it as among the PM Library. You're free to agree or disagree but understand is all I'd ask anyone. So, upon talking more about it before release, Nintendo themselves referred to Paper Jam as M&L 5 AND PM5 so it's actually the case whether anyone likes it or not. I'm still shocked at how many people don't remember or just choose to ignore that lol. And regardless of how much it leaned more to or how you feel about PJ personally, if nothing else, PJ explained how the Paper Mario Universe exists within/alongside the regular Mario Universe and how both have a Ni No Kuni/Wizard of Oz effect to them, which in turn makes sense as to why Miyamoto himself considers Paper Mario Canon in Mario overall, fun fact. And there you have it.

I wouldn't really just solely blame Twitter for the toxicity of the fanbase, but rather the shift to a more cynical and overly critical mindset people have adapted too nowadays. In fact it has become more notorious and overbearing in all of Nintendo's fanbases, but Paper Mario just happens to have one of the loudest and most annoying ones. Unless I'm with friends, I really just don't enjoy discussing any game in detail, especially the ones that will end up in obvious echo chamber statements, elitism and annoyingly cynical. It started off at first being a reasonable, but vocal critique over fans isolating a group of fans simply for preferring specific games in the series, to just constantly complaining to the point of hyperbole about every little detail (especially TTYD, which I get have obnoxious fans, but honestly I feel people single them out because of the ones who are like that, when there have been fans of every single Paper Mario game with just as bad of elitism in all of them, and even just as loud. And this wasn't just a Twitter thing with Paper Mario, I've seen this on Reddit and even Discord. Even KZbin comment sections, Twitter just so happen to be the catalyst for it. I almost felt ashamed for liking TTYD at times because it got so alienating to be a fan without hearing the same cynical and shortsighted criticisms. (There's also this trend of games people just want to pick on for some reason, first it was TTYD, now all of a sudden everyone hates SPM for some reason, despite people using its story as a shield for criticism before? And people just do this a lot with games now, all of a sudden its just bad) I'm all for discussing flaws in games, but I feel people have gone too far where it just devolves into complaining constantly, even over things that are a minor inconvenience at best or just a gross over exaggeration at worst. And it all seems to happen with games widely considered popular in some weird obsession to be contrarian. This was also around the time fans of games started making video after video over particular games where the same flaws are repeated ad nasuem, with nothing new to add, but presented like its something new)

We have the same problem here in Splatoon's community. There are so many Splatubers who make Splatoon 3 look as bad as Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing, to make the most money. Fans not only believe them, but they spread their message like the Word of God. This is why we have been an echo chamber of negativity for the past two years. The negativity also spread into the Zelda and Mario & Luigi communities. A vocal minority believed IGN's Brothership review on one of their worst years of all time.
@Surgemaster20124 күн бұрын
@@CalaHestoomi I 100% AGREE WITH YOU! And its my biggest issue with modern game, specifically related to Nintendo IPs. People don't really treat games as an experience to enjoy or engage with anymore, they treat it as a checklist to just mark off and do things and whenever the slightest inconvenience comes they spend so much of their time complaining about it. To the point echo chambers get made of that one (or more) minor inconvenience or something that REALLY isn't that bad they just make worse for whatever reason to the point where engaging in most circles about certain games becomes just an echo chamber of grown men complaining about the same things over and over again. Often to the point of hyperbole. You'd think someone literally offended them or their family or something the way they express such vitrol over things they get triggered by. Like sure, we all have our annoyances in games and when we find them pointing them out is fine and fair and CAN create interesting debates. The issue is that it all feels the same now, like everyone gets triggered by a lot of the same things in games or blow up issues that while are issues, make them worse than they seem. My thing is that a game is never going to be a 100% smooth and painless experience, even ones you love. And if people don't even bother to engage with a game and just form their relationship with a game on just being a checklist, then why invest in a hobby that requires putting hours of your time into content made to take time to engage with? (In many cases they focus SO much on the negatives to the point their relationship with a game, even if they love it feels like an abusive one. Why would you want a relationship with a game you love to be an abusive relationship? That's just toxic) You really should get another hobby in that case. And because people treat games this way it often leads to a lot of misinformation or lack of understanding a game's ideals. People can enjoy games how they want, but for me I like taking in everything and seeing what the game is offering me, not just play through a checklist to mark off, then overreact to the smallest of incoveniences. I can speak from experience these people are annoying in real life. There are also the gamers who are condescending and insult other gamers for how they play a game. There's also the fact everything has to be political or systemic now. ESPECIALLY when it comes to female characters in games, gamers always have to insert some kind of political or systemic opinion into factoring their overall judgement of the game. And considering how politics are. Its self explanatory.

Don't be fooled. The only reason why the classic fans seem tamer now is because they're being sated by the release of the game they've been hashtag-campaigning about for years, and likewise, the only reason why modern fans seem tamer is because they aren't being _as_ antagonized by the classic fans as a result. Once the next Paper Mario game gets announced, they'll be back in full force. The _only_ way I'll believe things will EVER improve is if the classic fans start apologizing to the modern fans. Logically, if you see less "negativity" (if we dont take into account that the discussion just died down because of relevancy), its because you are in an echo-chamber of "positivity". So when you call Bluesky less of an echo chamber than Twitter, thats quite funny. People are prone to disagreement because they have diverse opinions, experiences and ideas, which you kind of equates to negativity. If you dont see negativity when another game is annonced or when something becomes relevant concerning the series, that means you are in an echo-chamber of positivity, in other word, an echo-chamber of people with similar opinions. Cherry on top, Bluesky is stronger on censorship, so less people with diverse opinions. The hater boner of some people about X/Twitter is rooted in their disliking of different views and opinions, which they considier "toxic" and the fact that it censors less.
