Loved the van life video. On my van I had a similar problem with batteries drained so heat wouldn’t turn on. It turned out it’s not just your battery capacity but whether it is getting fully charged by driving. I think I was getting 30 amps from the second alternator. We added a third alternator to double the rate of charging to 60 amps and that helped.

Brilliant stuff as always. Did a 6 hour stint on a Glen Ogle/Gleann Dubh yesterday going up Creag Ghlas. A bit snowy/wondy at 500m up. Enough for me to fall over twice, lol! I was thinking about your videos as I walked along - the amount of effort you put in stopping to set up tripods and walk back to pick up! (applause emoticon!!). Another great video that brought back memories for me, thanks for that. The best brownie points I ever earned were on my wife's first winter camping trip to Glencoe, when I gave her my -25C rated down bag and suffered in my -5C one. We woke to a thick covering of snow on the tent which was a nice insulating blanket, but I still missed my down bag! I also used to love my goggles to protect my eyes during winter, and remember me and the dog being literally blown off our feet on the Mamores when we hit the ridge, having been sheltered from the wind on the ascent. We went back down very quickly :)

I used to have the diesel heater not click on in the mornings too, on the diesel heater the initial kick up the fuel pump needs a lot load from the battery, 12.8 at least on mines, so I leave it on lower heat all night if it’s to cold in nighttime simple increase temperature as it’s still slowly ticking away, or you have to jump over start engine for 5 minutes until the diesel heater fuel pump kicks in then switch engine off or buy a lifepo4 battery 👌🏼

You need (if you haven't got one) a Battery to Battery charger, will charge your leisure battery like a mains plug in charger, and fast. A battery meter would also allow you to see how much electricity you have used, and will show if you are charging properly. Stay warm!!
