Waku Waku Japanese - Language Lesson 50: Conjunctions

We felt we didn't thoroughly explain the verb conjugation process or some of the more complicated nuances of the Japanese language. So our hope is to have Miyashita-sensei (who hosts the more detailed language classes) create new videos that can more fully discuss these areas of the language. Basically we wanted to avoid any confusion. Thanks for the comment!

Correct! While there is some overlap at times, we do create Japanese language videos that are taught by our actual teachers here at Japan Society. They tend to be more similar to classroom learning structure (repetition, conjugations, etc.). So please check those out as well!

The technical definition for the word is "elder brother" but aniki is often used to refer to one's elder or superior among friends. It's a fairly masculine term and you might often hear it in anime, manga or even in yakuza films. Think in terms of someone who you respect or look up to like a brother, it doesn't necessarily have to be someone you are related to by blood.

"kedo" could be translated into "but." If you are speaking formal language, it is nice to say "desu kedo." For example, "I want it but..." "Hoshii desu kedo..." there are other ways to say "but" such as "ga" or "kedo mo" and etc.

Also, "ka" if used at the end of the sentence turns the sentence into a question. In Pimsleur (I've been using it and Japanese friends explained) if "ka" is used somewhere in the middle of the sentence between choices, it means "or". :)

Pimsleur also replaces 'wa/ha' with 'ga' in just about every situation, as in Kodomo 'ga' asunde imasu, which I've never heard used in that way anywhere else.

Great video! However, I'd like to comment on the English relatable word choice for "Sara ni". I believe that "Moreover" isn't used in English often, if ever in modern speech anymore. I see it exclusively in either JP/EN or EN/JP language books. I would recommend alternatively "Additionally" as an English equivalent which is more common in the modern vernacular. Probably "Furthermore" is used less than "Additionally", but used more than "Moreover". Your videos are insightful and fun, thank you!

It doesn't matter if its you calling your father either way. The difference between both is like the differences in a sentence between using "Dad" and "Father", but in Japanese, has stricter rules. You can only use 1 when you're speaking about someone else's father and the other when it is your own father. Also, when you're talking about your own father to someone else outside your immediate family is another rule between them. :)

Not sure about Michel Thomas, but Pimsleur really simplifies things to the bare bones, assuming you're listening to the CDs. From what I've heard, they don't really stress grammar as much as just making the words 'click' together in your head. Further studies are required to augment Pimsleur. Same with Rosetta Stone (why we watch Waku Waku Japanese!) :) I'd take the grammar from Pimsleur with a grain of salt.

from what i learned otousan is the polite way to say someone elses or your father... chichi is when you refer to your father, kind of like "dad" instead of "father"

Waku Waku is part of Japan Society. I believe they won't do months and days of the week, because another Japan Society Teacher did this and there's a video for it. Look up their channel please, before asking questions that may go unanswered for a long time. Look for " Days of the Week and Days of the Month" its another sensei, same channel.
