Great game from the boks and a valiant effort from a young Welsh team. Was chatting to folk at the local rugby club (Esher, England) and was saying as much as it possible for the boks to put 70 on the board it would be good for the Welsh if they could keep us around 50 and put some points on the board. Their lineout on attack looked strong and the team has a lot to work with. We will see if Gatty makes the 6 nations, but I hope the union invests better in grass roots and we see them get stronger. A good Welsh team is good for rugby. As always, thanks for the fair analysis Mark @twocentsrugby and hope you feel better! Ryan W

Gats looked really despondent prior to the game, but seemed to have cheered up a little by the end of the game. Huge defensive effort from Wales with both Fassi and Kolisi being held up over the line. Hendrikse probably left about 7 or 8 points out there with misses off the tee. That said, this 9&10 combo would probably be the Boks 4th or 5th choice. Also started our 3rd choice frontrow, which still dominated their opposition. I wish we had tried Kwagga at 12 to test his mettle in the backs in case a 7-1 split ever goes wrong. We ended up playing Pollard at 12... Wales will get better.

To those who just started following the Boks. We have never been a team that aims to pile a ton of points on the opposition. For example, in the 2019 WC, NZ put a 100+ points on Namibia and we managed only 50+ if memory serves me well. We still took home the Web Ellis and we don’t care that we didn’t put Namibia away like NZ did. We pride ourselves in the results (which is what matters), and not the score, like some of you expect the Boks to beat Wales senselessly

@JonoB232 күн бұрын
Biggest issue Wales are going through currently is the lack of power/size. You look at the difference between the teams and it was like U18s playing U15s. The players aren’t being produced and when they are, English academies snap them up which leads to them going through the English system and if Wales aren’t sharp enough, they miss out on them. WRU board needs to give genuine investment into the regions and the schools. It’s going to be a dark period but there’s a reason why the All Blacks and Ireland have such dominant teams. Their team are built on the back of high quality school systems and excellent clubs. Some are saying we need to lose a region but I don’t know if we need to do that. Certainly need money to go to the right places.

@JTM18093 күн бұрын
This was very sad to watch for me, who loves both Wales and South Africa. Those games used to be very competitive, this was lambs to the slaughter. If it wasn’t for an absolutely heroic defensive shift by Morgan, Lake, and Botham, the game would have gone extremely ugly for Wales. The sad state of the affairs is, that right now, Wales have five elite international players: Dewi Lake, Jac Morgan, Aaron Wainwright, Tomos Williams, and Josh Adams, a bunch of serviceable international players (the likes of Rowlands, Tshiunza, Reffell), and a sizeable contingent of players, who are not up to Tier 1 international standard. Lake and Morgan are the only true stars, i.e. guys who’d start on most other Tier 1 teams. Gatland in or out, this is a young team, and will be a long term project. As for South Africa, what we have seen in the 2nd half time with Pollard at 12 is the Tony Brown spin on “plan B”, i.e. what gets deployed against considerably weaker opposition. With Pollard at 12, the Boks were getting the ball out wide scary fast, and this is going to rip inferior teams to shreds. This will help the Boks conserve their strengths in the pool stages of RWC 2027: they will simply run around weak teams, without having their forwards getting unnecessary wear and tear. This is similar to what they used to do in 2019, when they had Elton Jantjies and Cobus Reinach for the plan B. In 2027, they will likely run a double playmaker scheme, focusing more on getting the ball out wide faster, rather than relying on surgical cross-kicking (that no one could deliver quite like Elton Jantjies - that was his point of difference). Pollard will be key here, in particular his ability to run/pass/kick the ball (as he’s shown in the 2nd half with his incisive carries), that makes him hard to defend and makes this strategy a good option against in-game adjustments. Kick/pass against a rush, run the ball or bring the ball to contact otherwise. This game was a testbench for the Boks. They were experimenting, yet they still run Wales over. I think 9 is still a conundrum for Rassie & co. Jaden was on/off. He could string a couple of phases with very quick ball recycle (and Wales were getting crushed when he did), at other times he seemed indecisive and slowed the progress down and made the forward have to work harder. The issue is, that he really isn’t a credible ball running threat the way both Grant Williams and Cobus Reinach are. So I don’t really see the overall shape of things here. The roles are clear between Grant and Cobus. The former is a much better stepper and can put defenders on their bums, while the latter has higher top speed and acceleration, but isn’t as nimble. The two combined can absolutely terrorize a defensive line across 80 minutes. I think it will boil down to which of the three is best defensively, which is where Faf comes back to picture, as he’s by far the best defender of the four. We’ve seen the absurd amount of talent the Boks have at prop, they practically have 3 options on either side, that would be walk-in starters in most Tier1 teams. It’s silly. No one else in the world has this depth, and unless World Rugby emasculates the scrum even further in order to prevent a Bok three-peat (which is what they’re openly working towards), other Tier1 teams will have a torrid time at scrum in the last 20min. Grobbelaar looked fairly good, especially considering, that his opposite number was the only guy who’d make a combined starting 15. This gives Rassie options in case Dweba never learns how to throw a line-out. Steenekamp being the Schalk Burger/Deon Fourie of 2027. The only areas of concern for the Boks remain to be midfield and lock, where there doesn’t seem to be any young blood coming up. Moeraat is not made of the same material as RG, Eben, Franco, or PSdT, so he can’t fill those shoes. For the midfield, the 2027 plan could be Moodie at 13, and Esterhuizen at 12, in which case Moodies should start getting opportunities in 2025 outside against minnows. Moodie must be in long term planning for sure, given he’s a golden bench asset for a 6/2 split (7/1 split is more like Damian Willemse). Outside back is covered. Blooding locks, rejuvenating the midfield, decisions at 9, and honing the plan B are the tasks leading up to 2027. A manageable homework set … well, compared to that of Wales.

This may be controversial but now in the pro era rugby has become more about numbers- what i mean is having a good base to select from. SA 60 mil wales 3 mil. Theres also an element of genetics - massive Boer farmers and great genetics of the Africans - which we don't have in Wales - very much generally smaller. Put those two together how do we compete with a Pack that size. look at the top teams right now, much bigger populations , big heavy scrums only exception is maybe Ireland and Scotland but we won't mention foreign players. In this game every time we forced a knock on -actually ended up as a SA advantage because we HAVE to opt for a scrum. Personally I think they should allow teams to opt for a tap and go instead - they keep talking about making the game more competitive, Wales suffered in 2 games this autumn with the NEW red card protocol, put in to improve the game so games will stay more competitive, yet knowing we have no hope at the scrum we are FORCED to take a scrum when the opposition have infringed. I do get it, its the rules and we have to deal with it but understanding the modern game and how much finding freaks of genetics who can play rugby gives larger countries and those with particular races who are genetically predisposed to being large and fast. whilst there is still clearly a lot of skill in the modern game there is a larger component these days where they rely on pure size. Think under 14's game where you have a freak that's 6 foot by 5 foot who just walks through the opposition. So my point, if world rugby were serious about making the whole scene more competitive they need to look at laws that will allow the bigger teams to keep that scrum advantage when its their advantage and allow smaller teams to avoid those scrums when its theirs. Hopefully that makes sense without sounding whiny as there's no doubt how good SA are and I'm not trying to complain about them just how its very hard for us smaller nations with no inherent genetics to keep up.

Wales has (had?) more registered rugby players (160557) than Ireland (157080) or New Zealand (156893), according to IRB, WRU etc (Although some of these stats are ~15 years out of date & things may have changed!) This Welsh team has very few international quality players and maybe at a push right now 2 players capable of making the lions squad next year. We are devoid of talent and with Josh Adams, Tomos Williams and taulupe faletau injured we are missing 3 of our best remaining players from the World Cup team last year. But most importantly of all we are way too small a team, we get bullied. We are brave but we desperately need some ballast. Probably an unpopular opinion, but the WRU's decision to sack Wayne Pivac a year out from the World Cup, like Rugby Australia's axing of Dave Rennie, looks ever more like a catastrophic miscalculation in retrospect. Both teams have been in freefall ever since. At least Australia look to be on the road back under Schmidt. Wales on the other hand are a shambles, with their hopelessly overmatched team of plodders being routinely smashed by all comers, and their provincial languishing in the doldrums of the URC table. The problems for them go way deeper than Gats, but it can no longer be argued that his "back-to-the-future" appointment was anything other than a knee-jerk impulse to return to their comfort zone after Pivac's innovations upset the veterans and failed to convince the Welsh public. Gats and his team now have to carry the can for decades of mismanagement, provincial underperformance and waste at the WRU, and it's increasingly difficult to see where they go from here.

wales would not lie down, stood up very well physically, counter assurgency for 10 min in 2nd half, and go see what the SA blokes look like with their back, bruised ribs etc. 618m run and only 7 tries.....SA is sloppy

I think Wales's white kit was intended as a surrender flag.

2 world cups in succession. Multiple cups won this year and only 2 losses. I think we can allow them one or 2 bad days at the office though...

Jaden Hendrikse should be dropped for not singing the national anthem. Be proud of your country. If you not don’t play for them. Absolutely disgusting.

Since when is singing along compulsory?
@canis22022 күн бұрын
Hold your horses there bud. Out of everything that this team represents and achieves you need to go and sully it with an 'observation' such as that? How you process that situation in that atmosphere is a personal one, no? You've done the work to get there and are about to put in even more work to realize a team goal, surely you are allowed some personal freedom, for the briefest of moments, to enjoy the occasion? Some of us saffas man 🤦♂️
@AdamBarker-e9t2 күн бұрын
@@oldoddjobs not at all compulsory but shows pride for your country. The flag that you play for. It’s not compulsory. It’s disrespectful. Maybe saying he should be dropped is an overreaction. But he should be asked why.
@AdamBarker-e9t2 күн бұрын
@@canis2202 hi man. Go and watch Invictus. See how important it is to respect your country and the flag you represent. It’s disrespectful not to sing the anthem. Maybe was a bit to harsh to say he should be dropped. I’ll concede that. But respecting your country and anthem is non negotiable.

School yard rules. Wales won the match 😂 This old fella has never heard of that before. What is wrong with Wales rugby 🤔👎

The WRU should start from scratch and take the national team off of the Tier 1 calendar, by which I mean they should start pitting them against teams like Georgia, Japan, Fiji etc. Because the facts are clear. They're a Tier 2 team right now, and will be for some time. There's no point at all continuing to be gluttons for punishment when all that's happening to them is trouncing after trouncing, as was the case against 2x of the teams from the Southern Hemisphere.
