Filipino parents ALWAYS tell their kids, “we have nothing to leave you but your education.” It’s a family’s pride and symbol of hope to have the children finish up to post secondary education. Not so well off families celebrate every graduation regardless of level because it’s a feat, breaking their backs working just to send the kids to school. Thus, the song tribute to parents in graduation ceremonies.

Aaaah, I'm crying!!!! For many of these graduates, the song brings them to tears because they understand their economic status. In the Philippines every end of school year there’s awarding, end of school programs or commencement or ceremonies like this and everyone is included not just selected students, including parents. And in events like this is when we acknowledge not just the students but also our parents for all their hard-work and sacrifices of our parents to be able to pay for our tuition. Unlike here in the west you’re on your own, you get your own student loan, you work to pay your own bills and you take care of yourself.

Awit or kanta are words that can be used as a noun or a verb. So it can mean "song" or "(to) sing". So the title of the song "Awit ng Anak" is "A Child's Song" in direct translation to English. The Filipino language has no 'son/daughter' word---we use 'anak na lalaki' (son) and 'anak na babae' (daughter).
