Join us on a budget food adventure in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, where we attempt to stick to a $5 budget for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. We start our day with delicious rice soup and noodle soup, and later enjoy a flavourful BBQ lunch. However, finding affordable dinner options proves to be a challenge, and we end up indulging in street noodles that push us over budget. To cap off the night, we sample some local snacks like popcorn and corn on the cob, washed down with cold beers. Watch to see how we fared in this $5 food challenge, and discover some hidden food gems in Phnom Penh along the way!

I’m impressed you spread the chili sauce and then topped with the garlic chili. The sandwich looks so good , especially the toasted baguette with the crusty outer layer. It’s just so much better than most subs and sandwiches places here in the US especially for that price.

I love how you failed and then just said, "f*ck it" and went all out. 😂 Those grilled skewers with the chili jam and veg looked so dang good! And there's honestly just something special about noodles cooked in a wok. There's even a term for it- "wok hei"..that smokey, umami flavor that comes with wok cooked food on high heat. The best. 🤤

🤣🤣 we’re bad losers! The skewers were amazing, we went back 3 more times after that!! Wow I didn’t realise there was a term for this, it’s honestly our favourite😄

2:08 is called Babaw/Borbor which means rice porridge in Khmer. It looks like you got babaw trei (fish). This dish comes with a variety of protein which includes chicken, pork belly, pork liver, chitterlings, pork blood curd, seafood and the broth is usually pork broth or sometimes chicken broth. People usually add fried minced garlic, ground black pepper, sambal chili, fermented soybean and some lime juice. There's also babaw saw (white) which is white rice porridge served either plain or seasoned with a little bit of salt and eaten in place of white rice with side dishes. 3:25 this is a Teochew-Cambodian dish called Kuy Teav which is derived from Teochew dialect Gui Diao. Kuy Teav/Gui Diao refers to the rice noodles, but also to the rice noodle soup. It's usually made with pork broth. This dish became popular in Saigon during the 1950s where it is called Hu Tieu Nam Vang which translates to Phnom Penh noodles. Teochew people migrated to different parts of SEA and Gui Diao in other countries are made with different ingredients and some will use chicken broth or beef broth. There's also a dry version of Kuy Teav where the noodles are pan cooked and seasoned with soy sauce and served with a bowl of broth on the side. It's called Kuy Teav Koh (dry). It's also made in southern Vietnam, but I'm not sure what they call the dry version of Hu Tieu Nam Vang.

The rice porridge was genuinely amazing. We ended up eating this every single day for breakfast and actually looked to find similar dishes in countries like Thailand and Vietnam after haha, proper breakfast that sets you right up for the day!

I think you don’t get scammed when you exchange your can caps for beer. Some places charge 500 Riels and other places charges 1000 Riels for service charge. Anyway, thanks for visiting Cambodia.

Are you going to Siem Reap? It’s a nice and relaxing city. If you plan to visit Siem Reap for a few days, I recommend you to visit Angkor Wat and Ta Prom Temple. Actually there’re thousands of temples there. Anyway I liked the fact that you guys came to Phnom Penh. Many tourists only go to Siem Reap and overlook the beauty of Phnom Penh. I’m glad you gave Phnom Penh a chance. It’s such an underrated capital city.

An exciting day you guys had. I honestly couldn't manage $5 a day. I avoid street food, but that doesn't mean it's terrible. A rice meal at Khmer restaurants costs around $2.5 with complimentary water or iced tea. Aeon Max and 7/11 have half-price stuff on sale now and then, especially late evening. Are you heading next to the islands or Angkor Wat?

I live in Chicago where food is frozen. All the restaurants need do is heating frozen food and give it to you. People here rate restaurants here 4+ to 5 stars. Grilled chicken sandwich here cost over $15. All they do just heating the frozen chicken, chicken with fake grill marks.
