Thank you for a very informative video. I was injured in an automobile accident and had reconstructive surgery performed on my left ankle almost six weeks ago. I'm now allowed 100% weight bearing on the ankle as tolerated and using a walker to get around. I'm hoping to graduate to a cane soon and will talk with my PT when he visits tomorrow. Watching this video in advance of his visit has been very helpful.

I began using a stick occasionally when I developed arthritis in my left knee. But since I've been doing your recommended knee strengthening exercises, hardly use it - ! But when I'm hill walking, I prefer a staff similar to a scout staff as I can adjust my handhold and thus the 'length' of the staff instantly depending on the ground I'm negotiating.

I both have autism as a chronic illness that has given me balance issues and pain when walking long distances. so having an adjustable cane for when I need it is a life saver as I love to walk outside this video has been very helpful in helping me to adjust the stick an make sure I'm not using it the wrong way an posible hurting myself

I only need my stick occasionally for balance, so I tend to walk like I don't need it. It's got a round brass knob top (styled after Bat Masterson's stick) and is more of a fashion statement. When I walk normally with it I use that sort of "swagger" gait where the tip only makes contact with the ground every fourth step. Three other uses for a walking stick: 1. checking the depth of puddles you can't simply step over. 2. pulling forward items at the back of the top shelf in a grocery store, and 3. when walking through a crowd of people such as in a busy shopping mall, you can subtly "telegraph" to oncoming people which side you intend to pass by, just by pointing (at near floor level) to one side of them or the other. It's remarkably effective for "parting the sea" of people.

Perfect video. I use a stick, exactly as described. Many people are given a stick, perhaps by a hospital, and are expected to get on with it. I have often, with their permission, advised people where they are going wrong. There seems to be a view, obviously incorrect but, for some reason, intuitive, that the handle should coincide with the waistband.

Great advice, in theory. But, in practice, use what works for you, to keep you moving, and in balance. If you feel more confident walking with a slightly higher stick, held in the "wrong" hand, but it allows you to walk and continue moving and being active, then that's better than avoiding activity, IMHO.

Hi Will, I'm 79 now and have been a bkl for 10 1/2 years. That's below knee amputee. I sometimes use a cane (exactly like yours), if I'm walking for a longer time, such as a long excursion around COSTCO. The cane takes a bit of strain on my residual limb. I have an excellent prosthetic. Do you have different instructions for us amputees? A video for them would be a great addition. Thanks for this and all your other videos. lOVE THEM.

I have never understood the "rules" about how you are supposed to use a stick, have a suspicion that they are laid down by people who have not experienced serious issues themselves! If my right leg is painful, then it is helpful and comfortable to ease the stress on it by using the stick in my right hand - as a third leg. It works fine, enables me to move quite steadily. The other way is awkward to manage and just doesn't work. The other thing often forgotten is balance. The stick on uneven ground/pavements enables you to keep adjusting your balance if you wobble - very important! More so maybe than pure support. Tony

Nice video. QUESTION: do you have a video on how to use a cane or walking stick when enjoying nature on a trail? I’ve noticed weaknesses or pain in different parts of my body depending on the trail and day. I use to walk/hike all the time and I don’t want to give this up. I am still good with walking on flat surfaces as you are now demonstrating. I look forward to reading your reply.

I have two sticks as both my knees are problematic. When I had one I found I was hunched over and lopsided. Now I have two I can stand more upright and this is much better for my breathing and no back pain. I can only walk 5-10 steps before stopping to get my breath so again the two sticks are more useful. The problem I have is they are a nuisance when you're sitting down and when you need to use your hands - shopping etc. I will check the height thats very useful

Thanks, but I only find a cane useful on same side as problem leg. It is to catch a fall from total leg spasmic collapse at the instant of bearing weight. It normally supports no weight except for the rare but catastrophic spasm. All other uses of canes just seems an assist that isn't essential for stoic folks.
