At 19.14, you can clearly see the apartment building where my grandmother used to live. Although she’s been gone for over twenty years, I still have very fond memories of going to visit her in this neighbourhood. To be honest, it hasn’t changed much since the ‘90s. I always enjoy looking back at this place and reminiscing.

I’m from Dublin and was in NY last year. Stayed in Manhattan. 2nd time in NYC. My uncle lived on McLean for 20+ years. Moved home last year due to illness but I always regret not going to stay with him the first time I was over. He even offered to get me sponsored with a visa when I was 18. Thank you for this video. It’s given me a much better look than google maps. Only criticism is like a comment below, my uncle’s local pub was Rory Dolan’s. But otherwise a fantastic insight into a very close knit, if not disappearing community. 👏

Thanks for mentioning Rory Dolan's, the cornerstone public house pub of the little Ireland enclave. Glad to know its still there. If ActionKid had not turned on Kimble but remained on McLean he would have reached it, but not much else was in that direction as I recollect, a few smaller establishments, some auto businesses, and a ballfield and park. Past Central Park Avenue were a few more attractions, Manions pub, perhaps an encore presentation for another time. Good show !

@@richardkluesek4301 You're welcome. Mannion's was featured in the HBO miniseries, 'Show Me A Hero,' which centered around the embattled ex-mayor of Yonkers, Nicholas Wasicsko. There were various scenes shot in the city, including one in which the mayor is driving up Lawton Street to McLean Avenue, in front of St. Paul The Apostle Church.

I Loved Rory Dolan's. It is housed in a converted auto repair shop with the thick stone and cement walls. Inside is dark wood paneling, like in Irish pubs, and a fine display of Waterford Crystal. Very good food and used to have great music on weekends. You would have to be dead not to enjoy that place! ☘( shamrock)

I loved this tour. I grew up in Wakefield and my husband grew up in Woodlawn. His family all attended St. Barnabas Church and elementary school. He had even worked in that Carvel in high school. His family lived down the street from the Post Office and the home, bought in the 1950's, was only sold a few years ago. I used to walk on Katanoh ave quite a bit. Btw, the "clover" is called a shamrock, and is native to Ireland.😉

Unfortunately, Dan just passed away about two years ago and I think his family run it now but it’s still there I used to hang around all the Irish kids from that neighborhood. When you crossed the county line entering the Bronx on Katanoh ave., there were a few feet of the very old slate sidewalks left. They look like rectangular stepping stones. Hey, it's good to see the Irish neighborhoods.! Ken, you do a great job of showing a down on the street look at the different ethnic hoods all over New York City and what the U.S. is all about. A country of immigrants from all over the earth. (BTW, the coffee shop is not necessarily an Irish shop. Irish-Coffee is a unique way to serve a cup of coffee. An Italian shop can serve "Irish Coffee" and be not an Irish establishment. But odds are that that Irish Coffee Shop in Little Ireland is Irish owned AND they serve the Irish Coffee style cup. Ha.!) You know about the shop in San Francisco called I think The Buena Vista and the only thing they serve is Irish Coffee. Irish Coffee by the dozen every minute. Thanks Ken.

The Bronx used to be ruled by Italians, Irish, & Jewish folks until around the 50' S when gradually the Puerto Ricans started migrating to NYC. Then, gradually, crime increased in NYC, & then it underwent a financial crises. So most of the white folks moved to parts north of The Bronx, Long Island, & NJ. Then we had the era of buildings burning down in The Bronx. Then they started to rebuild, & now we're here in 2020. There are still traces of old buildings & even businesses that were around during these times. When I lived near there, I spotted some new business coming up. When they'd change the signage, the old one was carved or nailed into the top of the store so we can see what used to be there during these eras.

McSorley’s Ale House is in Manhattan. The oldest bar in NYC. 7th Street by 3rd Ave. Only one bathroom bec. women were not allowed in taverns when it was built in mid-1800s. You won’t get assaulted by CD pushers in this neighborhood....

6:28 never seen a "Lyonnaise Burger", what is that ?? As a french I think Lyonnaise is a reference to the city of Lyon ? In France if you speak of "Lyonnaise" as a dish to someone he/she would not understand, and it's weird because this restaurant make irish specialities and this word sound really french... "Lyonnaise" is how a french call a resident of the city of Lyon, so maybe in the history a resident of Lyon immigrated to Ireland and he was a chef ?? curious to know what is the story behind this

Don't take everthing literally. Julia Child, an American cookbook author and cooking show host, studied cooking in France. She created a recipe for "French hamburgers" - Bifteck Hache a La Lyonnaise or Lyonnaise burgers. There were half a dozen pizzerias in the video which didn't shock you.

I'm afraid the Irish are not coming to America like they used to, that door has been closed for a few years now due to the changed immigration policies, you over stay your visa your automatically banned for ten years. So the Irish goes where they are welcome, to Australia etc. I have to say the Irish are very hard and dedicated workers , and they add a lot to what ever country they gain citizenship in.. it's sad to see the change, but it is what it is.
