If the investment money dries up, guess what, no money to also shore up and rehab all the old buildings. Then the construction beam bridges sprout up to protect from falling concrete, stone slabs, terra cotta, Chrysler bldg bric-a-brac and former investment consultants.

Construction beam bridges - are those these one-storey-tall scaffoldings put alongside buildings every other block? What do they actually do? I never see construction being done, the only reason for them I can think of is to prevent loose bricks coming off the facades hitting pedestrians, which seems like a silly explanation, so I´m left with none. What are they really for?

You're essentially paying for a really stunning view. The least expensive apartment in one of the "billionaire's row" buildings and those with central park views are minimally priced at about $3 million and up. The apartments are very small, the kitchens are tight, they're generally a small 1 bedroom apartment with old appliances and not very livable. But the view is SPECTACULAR!!! Plus you get to live in the city in the best neighborhood and you walk outside your building and you have Carnegie Hall, Central Park, hundreds of incredible restaurants, times square in walking distance, Columbus circle in walking distance, Rockefeller center in walking distance, Lincoln center in walking distance, food stores in walking distance, 5th avenue, clothing shopping. Everything is in walking distance and it would be an absolute joy to wake up every morning to go jogging in Central Park. But again the living spaces are quite bad and you look at your apartment thinking it's not worth the price from the inside, knowing you can buy/build for that same $3 Million a 3 story mega mansion with outdoor swimming pool, 2 car garage in a quiet, well guarded and expensive upscale neighborhood in Brooklyn where some Billionaires and mostly millionaires live as well and you're about 40 minutes train ride from "Billionaires Row" subway exit in Manhattan.

I was in the old Rizzoli bookstore on W57 once and it was very quiet, Elton John was on the 2nd floor buying books and wow did he buy books, he and his entourage were busy paying and boxing them at the ground floor cash desk. I think it's the only time I've actually recognized a celebrity without being told by someone. Too bad Steinway and Rizzoli are gone now from this street, but change is good?! How can people live above these noisy streets, I always wonder. I work on the 7th floor and the first busy traffic street is like 100 to 200 meters away (110 to 220 yards). But I will never open a window because the sharp "hiss" from the passing cars is deafening. Yet people live here in NY in the midst of all of it this.
