Walking NYC's STRANGE Neighborhood : Meadowmere, Queens & Meadowmere Park, Nassau, Long Island

I walk through the small neighborhood of Meadowmere, Queens on the border of Long Island near the JFK airport and then visit neighboring Meadowmere Park in Nassau County, Long Island.
Meadowmere was by far the strangest neighborhood I've ever visited in NYC. It is only 6 blocks long, and the only place in NYC which is EAST of Long Island.
From Wikipedia:
"Meadowmere is a neighborhood in Queens, New York City. It is connected to Meadowmere Park in Lawrence, Nassau County, New York, which is part of the Five Towns area of southwestern Nassau County. Meadowmere is surrounded by Nassau County, and comprises just four streets and six blocks, bordered on the west by Hook Creek and on the east by Rockaway Boulevard."

There was a big fire today in Meadowmere Park, it took out three houses. You passed by them at the 14:49 mark. If strange little towns is your thing, check out South Floral Park between Elmont and the village of Floral Park. It's small and walkable, it's its own village, and kind of forgotten by the towns around it.

Man, you brought back memories from a long time ago. I used to work in the five towns plaza, 24 years ago, in a furniture store, and I used to go to IHOP for lunch. I remember how I had to ride in vans, because they were cheaper and faster than buses, from Sutphin Blvd, to Five Towns Plaza. I left NY 14 years ago....I miss it sometimes. Great video friend.

Interesting area. Regarding complaints about airplane noise, I look at it this way -- if you move into a neighborhood near an airport AFTER the airport was built, it is your choice to put up with the noise, so you have no reason to complain.

Always drove past this area in my childhood. Interesting to see what is actually beyond the main roads. I imagine its usually louder with normal air traffic, covid has less flights going and coming. The planes probably fly pretty low. Over one town in Cedarhurst, the planes fly so low that the ground shakes. Rosedale, Inwood, Howard Beach, Rockaways all have similar feels to this area.

Very nice job. An informative, casual walk through tiny "forgotten neighborhoods." A little dramatic, too, as you never know what you might come across. The zoning brings working-class residential, aquatic, light industry, shopping centers, and quiet and busy streets mixed in with some graffiti, abandoned boats, and trash lying around together in a kaleidoscopic way. Thanks for taking us to a place where most of us would probably never go but have likely wondered about in an instant at some point in time.

Just fantastic Kid!!!! So esoteric and weird and arcane and messy! Everything I like!!!! I sort of watched it before I woke up and then rewatched it carefully. Mid-watchings, I looked up Meadowmere, coulda been Meadowmere Park and learned of an arcane synagogue: Derech Emunoh, that finally burned down in 2002 after some previous fires. It, the congregation then worshipped in a trailer for 7 years. The original building was beautiful - modelled after the oldest synagogue in the United States; Congregation Touro in Rhode Island I think. Anyway, I am always so happy to watch your videos. They take me places I sometimes feel I have dreamed before I see them. Thanks Kid!!!!🌉🕍🛥️🐕

Rosedale is my old neighborhood... only my house was closer to Green Acres Mall, but I know all over here also since I was a kid. In this shopping center where the Lowe’s is, used to be Mays when I was a kid and then it became Fleaport Fleamarket. The Lowe’s used to be Pergamens, Wholesale Liquidators was in that shopping center too. Across the way was a shopping center with the store TSS, and a fruit store called Big Banana.

Due to the lay of the land, Meadowmere was hit HARD by Hurricane Sandy, that may explain the bent street signs.

Glad somebody's decided to do a walking tour video of greater downtown Meadowmere/Meadowmere Park--too bad you didn't make a side trip to Warnerville, Kenneth (probably an even STRANGER, obscure NYC neighborood, right across Head of Bay from Meadowmere Park). Although Meadowmere Park is technically part of Woodmere, & the segment of Rockaway Tpke. between Hook Creek & the LIRR is divided between Cedarhurst on the east & Inwood on the west, all the addresses there have traditionally been Lawrence addresses, & everyone I've ever known has considered it to be in Lawrence. I'm originally from Lawrence (lived in Chicagoland as my sole address since 1972), worked during summer of 1969 at May's, where 5 Towns Shopping Center is now. And that IHOP is the first IHOP I'd ever seen or visited. Hope to see more Five Towns videos from you--if you want, I can suggest some resources for background info.

The saddest thing about Jamaica Bay is that the water has become seriously polluted in the last fifty years with no hope for remediation

Doggie was so funny. I don’t think she could get after you, she was behind a fence. lol. Just protecting her territory. :). The second dog, i think she just wanted you to pet her. :)

I wouldn’t want to pass judgment on people living in those homes because those homes do not always look that way this is a forgotten because of Sandy and the damage is a cost with flooding above the homes.

I agree, not everyone got a grant or had the type of insurance that would cover all of the damage.Lots of homes around me are still damaged or lifted still waiting or being worked on.

Meadowmere reminds me of a few blocks off of the Belt Parkway and Cropsey Avenue. I haven't been there in a while. I know they built a Home Depot on Cropsey Avenue, and don't know if they bulldozed the homes.

I remember the 5 towns mall from the 60's to the 80's. Used to be an A&P on the right where it says "store for rent."

Yeah, it wasn’t an A&P. There was one on Hungry Harbor Rd though. There used to be a movie theater in the mall.

I don’t see this as strange. It’s a small neighborhood on the water. The streets are like this because it’s small.

Might want to acquire a dog bite map from a newspaper or city agency while trekking outback just to avoid wild dog packs. Very interesting videos.
