My niece just graduated from 12 years of Catholic Schools in San Francisco and Mercy Burlingame. And chances are her Catholic educators failed her, as they appear to do almost everywhere, because instead of actually teaching her apologetics, scriptural hermeneutics, and Quality comparative religion courses, they teach the textbook theology without the underlying history and philosophy behind it. Her parents also probably failed her as well. It was their job to properly educate her. In the modern world you simply cannot just get by as a Christian without a robust understanding of your faith. Anyone else see (reverent) humor in that Jesus changed Simon's name to Cephas, that same apostle is the only one who wanted to get out of the boat and walk to Jesus, and upon reaching Him, Cephas begins to doubt and sinks like a... rock.

The name Simon was a weaker name. It was Simon who was to deny Jesus. And Jesus said to Simon that he prayed that his faith will not fail him and Jesus changed from Simon to Peter in Matthew 16 18. Cephas Petros or Peter means ROCK. a Rock is solid

Peter is called First Apostle to be called when Jesus said Come with me I will make you Fishers of Men. And he caught fish in the net and it did not break. Parallel to Peter being the first Apostle to Preach in public and converting 3000.. The net is the Church and he caught 3000 converts and the Church according to Jesus even the gates of hell not prevail.

Peter is mentioned in the four synoptic gospels as PROTOS PETROS Peter is First Apostles and Peter is also refered as Prince of the Apostles. He was the leader of Apostles

The disciples were confused about Jesus' identity when Jesus calmed the storm, so they were amazed and asked, "What kind of person is this, so that the winds and funds obey Him?" Peter is able to walk on the water as long as his eyes are fixed on Jesus. But when the wind, representing worldly, sensual things, whips up and distracts him, he begins to sink. This is just like us, who, in those moments when our minds are fixed on God, begin to see the world the way God sees it. But let an ill wind blow--an undeserved evil, say--and we switch back to worldly mode and begin to fret. Jesus' point is that if Peter had the firm faith that he one day will, after the Resurrection, his mind would remain always fixed on Jesus, even when He's not in front of Peter and winds are blowing all around. The story of Elijah is a parallel to this. Elijah is visited by the Lord, but the Lord's voice is not heard in all of the winds, earthquakes, and fires that suddenly erupt. Men in those days thought that God, if He spoke to them at all, must speak in such grand, bombastic language, but in reality, such notions, like the events themselves, are just false distractions. He speaks to us in silence, when our attention is fixed on Him in prayer and our eyes are covered over, blotting out the world.

I agree. Ephesians 4:14 -- Where in the account of Christ's walking on the sea is it implied that Peter is like a child, or that he is being "tossed back and forth by the waves and swept along...?" Where is it intimated that the wind has emanated from, or represents, human cunning and craftiness?" Winds, in the Bible, are always either natural events or stirred up by angels...

@ You are engaging in a circular argument. The scripture supports both readings, the actual event and the lessons that event teaches. Matthew 7:7 Mark 11:22-24 AND Luke 6:46-49 Jesus instruction on FAITH and the reliance on HIM for SALVATION. Ephesians 2:8 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not from you; it is the gift of God; For those that have wisdom the mystery is revealed in the Eucharist: Ephesians 5:25-27 25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ loved the church and handed himself over for her 26 to sanctify her, cleansing her by the bath of water with the word, 27 that he might present to himself the church in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. Peter's rightly testing Christ in his role as the first pope; he's charged with verifying if an apparition is true or false in the final judgement of any apparition, so he's testing him to see if indeed it *is* Christ or not.
