Walking Stick with leather wrap and pyrography

A simple walking stick with a lot going on! We have epoxy inlay, a little carving, a leather wrap handle and some wood burning or pyrography. Quite a bit of work going into a simpler looking stick but I will show you the step by step process to finish all the details. Some tung and teak oil to finish the outside and a rubber tip for a non-slip grip at the base. Hope you enjoy it and let me know if you like what you see.

Nice job, Jason. You give me ideas. I might suggest that after wrapping the spaces with packing tape, you might have used a 12 cc syringe to inject the resin through the tape.

Love the video, I'm working on a walking stick for a Friend, it has some really deep checks, so I have used resin and variegated the colors, as they spiral down around the piece. It's Peach wood from a tree in my yard, it's been drying over a year. Nice light weight but a really hard wood. I have inset an arrowhead and making an inset leather wrap for the handle. Your video has some great information and has shown me a lot of great information. ❤

Let me know what you think... did you like the leather wrap compared to the paracord wraps on previous sticks? What did you think about the wood burning on the side... always like to hear what you are thinking.

Like the leather wrap, so much more appropriate compared to paracord. If I dare, try to do it myself on my DIY walking stick I’ve found over 30 years ago in a wood and used and maintained since. By the way, is there any way to determinate which wood it’s made of? The stick has been sanded, restored, oiled en varnished many times since…. Just curious.

A variety of techniques and tools makes it fun. I like the leather wrap. I'm not sure how it will hold up over the years, but it is a learning opportunity. Nothing lasts forever, but that is part of the process.

Hey Jason........Can I use your saying, "Sky above, Earth Below, Peace within" for one of my sticks? Also this stick could have used some more work on it. Like your basket weave.....would have been great........Wish I had your table.

Absolutely you can use it on your sticks, I heard it somewhere myself, some saying about hiking and nature. I tried to keep the stick simpler and let the pyrography stand out but I can see your point about more details. Yes, I built that workbench and its nice to have a large worksurface to lay out all the tools while working. Thanks for watching the video!

What type of resin did you use? Deep pour or regular?

Just a regular 2 part epoxy. It dries in about a day

After I strip the bark from the stick, I have had a lot of the sticks crack, or split , while waiting to be worked on. Any ideas

It sounds like they are drying out too quickly. I usually leave the bark on, which slows the drying process and make sure I store them in a cool area out of the sun (my garage or basement). This does take longer to dry (up to a year) but minimizes the checks or cracks from forming. I use a lot of dead sticks I find in the woods and I like some of those defects, I just fill them with epoxy and gives it some added character. Hope that helps
