Hi, I’m Christan Long, welcome back. In this video, I hike out from Gorge River to the Cascade road end in just over 8 hours. Along the way, I explain how as a family we used to do this very same hike over 4-5 days when me and my sister Robin were young.

Love your amazing family! I did the Hollyford trip in 1980 , so can appreciate the terrain!'

42ks of that terrain in 8 hours is a tallent, and that you've done it in a couple of hours less is so impressive. It's such a wild beauty, this part of our country.

Great video, I use to live 8 km south of Greymouth as a teenager and spent most of my spare time in the bush possum trapping, fishing, and tramping the many local walks. Your bush and beach scenes bring back many fond memories. I missed the coast so much when we shifted away. Keep up the good videos.

Thank you for sharing your awesome video. What a wonderful insight into the incredible walk in/out to Gorge River and the sheer magnitude and beauty of the remote country and coast. I read your Dad's book a few years ago and have just finished your book this Easter (2022). Thoroughly enjoyed them both. Looking forward to reading your Mum's book next and watching some more of your videos. Wishing you the very best for the future and maybe another book from you one day with more of your amazing adventures.

Thanks for reminding me of that trip-I hitched from Haast and made it to Hope hut in a day, then walked down to Gorge river the next day arriving at dusk. Your dad rowed me across after I hollered. Stayed a couple of nights-you would have been about 4. Then a plane landed and I hitched a lift down to Big Bay where I met Mitch, stayed a couple of nights there, then walked up the Hollyford in 2 days and hitched out. Great memories, cheers.

As someone who has walked this, I must confess I was more like toddler Christian than the current version in terms of times. I guess he has had a lifetime of experience doing this trip, but it is not easy to walk for hours on those head-sized and shaped boulders for those unaccustomed to that activity. Particularly as the beaches are mostly on a significant slope. I camped at Callery Creek for two nights on a wonderful campsite, because it is amazing to be so remote. Not many walk down the coast, maybe a dozen parties a year, other than the Longs. They seem to have moved the underutilised Spoon Hut to the coast, rather than being a few hours walk up a creek that has no track.

Hello! Callery creek would be a really amazing place to camp and yeah now the spoon hut is really nicly located by the sea.

Thank you so much for uploading your great and challenging adventure. That looks like an amazing coastline and I really appreciate the work and effort you put into your production, as I create hiking videos myself and I know how hard the work can be. just in case you like silent hiking films, it would be a pleasure if you come over and follow my dog and me on our outdoor adventures ;) Stay safe out there. Hi do you think it would be possible to mountain bike into the Hope Hut? Obviously you would need to ford the river crossings. But the 4 wheel drive track looks bikeable and we could leave our bikes at Hope hut and then walk from there

No because only part of the journey is possible on a mountain bike. And often i fly one way so then my bike would be stuck in the middle of the track somewhere,

Hi sir, it's me again I just want to ask, how much(financially) did it cost for your parents to move from the city to live in that place? And how long did it take to build a shelter ?
@WildKiwiAdventurer
@WildKiwiAdventurer 2 жыл бұрын
The house was abandoned and no one wanted to live there, so it cost them nothing. Its only in recent years that people want to live out in the wilderness more.
