CHRISTCHURCH
For 160 years, the green, garden city of Christchurch was the antipodean England. Two devastating earthquakes changed that forever, but they haven’t destroyed the city’s will. Tony visits a town that is looking to the future, but still takes pride in its past.

I was In Christchurch last week (Australian), It has come leaps and bounds in 5 years since the release of this video. Still a lot of construction but it is a beautiful city. Maybe revisit this series Tony.

John Dean's builder, Samuel Manson, who built the oldest house in Canterbury, was my great great great grandfather. He, and his wife Jean, leased land at Teddington near Governors Bay, and became farmers. They had 17 children surviving to adulthood. Letters from the time indicate that Jean was a kind woman who had a close relationship with the local Maori, at Onawe Flat Peninsular. The suburb of Riccarton was named after the place in Ayreshire County, Scotland, that was the original home of the Deans, the Mansons and the Gebbie family who arrived in 1841 on a boat called The Thomas Harrison

Thanks gor posting this, it's weird as a local to watch this and remember how things were just after the quake, with the cbd closed and everything. Wish I could clamber up the stairs to the cathedral spire one last time and really appreciate the view 🥲

As a New Zealander living in Australia I love this series. It's not meant to be a comprehensive history of both countries. It's a snapshot of a few interesting moments. Australia is huge with 25+ million people, NZ has 5 million. Of course there's more stories from Australia. It doesn't mean NZ's aren't fascinating too. 🤦

The greed, arrogance, ignorance and stupidity of the business and political leaders in Christchurch before this man-made disaster occurred were beyond belief. And it will happen again for the very same reasons.

Ok much of the city was built on marsh land but your judgment is harsh. It is easy to make these claims in hindsight, but I grew up there and I never heard anyone predict this

@@chchwoman9960 Do your own research. The data is available from reputable sources online. The critics of the negligent development in Christchurch were treated like pariahs, and completely ignored.
