In this episode of my series “Walks in Dorset”, I take a walk in & around the village of Hinton St Mary which s situated a mile North of Sturminster Newton. Once again I am accompanied by my Whippet, Logan.
I park my car in the village and start off with a wander around the village, beginning with a look at the Manor House & a visit to St Mary's church. The village is full of pretty houses & cottages and has a lovely pub - The White Horse - and a delightful village garden (with a maze!).
I then head off into the countryside, Westwards across fields and through woods to meet up with the river Stour at Cutt Mill. At this point, I join the Stour Valley Way and follow this long distance path on the Eastern side of the river in the direction of Sturminster Newton.
Just before Sturminster Newton, I join up with the Hardy Way & head North through Twinwood Coppice back to Hinton St Mary. As I come into the village, I pass the location of the site of what was possibly either a Roman Villa / Farmhouse or a Roman building with a religious purpose. A magnificent mosaic was discovered there in the 1960's.
My final destination was The White Horse pub where I took refreshments.
