I have extremely fond memories of Ludlow. As children, our parents would take my brother and I together with our aunt and uncle and their two boys on a Sunday 'day out' to the beautiful town of Ludlow. We would wander around the town peeking in the shops, visit the castle, have Sunday lunch and sometimes go fishing and paddling in the river. We would also visit nearby Carding Mill valley [where we would all wear out our shorts sliding down the grassy slopes on our bottoms!] I remember that there used to be a huge oak tree that had been cut down, stripped of its bark and left on a gentle grassy slope - and we would play on this for hours [it became a Lancaster bomber and we were the flight crew!] They are some of the best moments I had has a child and we were always so excited when mom and dad would tell us we were going to Ludlow!

Indeed, and I think they must have walked past it. As they reached the top end of Broad Street, just past The Angel. they would bear right onto King Street and immediately in front of them would be 'Crash Towers', which was above the shop that is now Balfours estate agents. There is a blue plaque on the side of the building bearing the information.

Quite the nicest town in England (well in my humble opinion) I kayaked the Teme for many years in my youth. The whole town is a marvel of olde worlde shops and cafes, the castle is just the right side of falling down. Only downside was the time I took a lorry through with metalwork for the library (right next to the castle) not so much fun! Another super vignette ! Although how you could talk and walk up that hill beats me!

Now the only thing i can really remember about it is that the cottage was near a white round house that was up a small lane. Not much to go on i know, but any locals reading this may be able to help. 50+ years robs me of most details im afraid 😟

@RichardVobes4 жыл бұрын
I shouldn't think it is rough.
@chess29404 жыл бұрын
Lived near Ludlow my whole life. It isn’t rough by any means. The period properties within the town are very pricy and the town itself attracts many people who appreciate local and artisanal shops, and a quiet country lifestyle. There are housing estates which are dotted around the edges of the town as it has naturally expanded, and sure enough like any place, there are some areas which are not so idyllic as the town centre. But overall, it’s a lovely place.

My wife and I were there at the same time as you, not realising that they were gearing up for a food festival and the castle was closed because of it, which was a bitter disappointment to us as we had journeyed from Chesterfield, Derbyshire. However we walked around the town area and unfortunately we’re disappointed again as we thought the town area (and other towns we have visited too) had lost it’s oldie worldly charm due to a never ending supply of charity shops and estate agents everywhere that had replaced the individual high street shops that we remember from past. Instead of some quaint tea shops that we looked forward to seeing, they had been replaced with your typical chain brand coffee shops. As I said, this is a present day problem in most English towns we have visited which have lost their old English charm for the most part, primarily due to online shopping killing the high street. Such a shame.
