Chichester is an ancient town, going back to Roman times when they built the six and a half feet walls around it and the roads to London and Silchester. The Anglo-Saxons were here and the Normans.
I walk the heart of Chichester, exploring the market centre and cathedral. Join me.

I moved from Chichester to America in 2011, and I’ve been really homesick lately for a while. This video was not only what I needed, but also had a history lesson. Thank you for recording this walk

I worked in Chichester for 16 years as a Baker in 70 (sadly yet another Coffee shop has taken it over this year 2018 )North St Atkins rescued two Bakery books dated 1927 in a skip our builders threw away when we moved across the street to our new bakery ,in our cellar where we stored our tins was a big wooden door with iron bars on it behind that was huge stones like a collapse was told it was a secret tunnel for priests to escape to the Cathedral from the Roundheads .met my wife there she was shop Manageress at the time married her in 1977 41 years ago this July .

trust me you don't, its full of tory OAPs and youth offenders. As well as heavily populated in Serbians that flood the streets trying to sell their goods. Don't even get me started on the Swiss, as they flock in their thousands swarming the local parks, trashing the place with empty bottles of cider and vodka.

@@RichardVobes I am from Eugene, Oregon USA. So the oldest houses & storefronts we might get the privilege of seeing out here are from the Mid 1800's when pioneers came out on the Oregon Trail. It makes me sad when I see any of our building of heritage being neglected, so I can only imagine how sad it had to be see your rich English history "corroding away." I just wanna save them all!!!

When the central tower fell in 1860 it left one heck of a void and that took a whole lot of sweeping up. Unfortunately the Normans built economy money saving structures and walls were constructed of dressed ashlar (stone blocks) and both faces and the middle was simply flint and rubble with a dollop of cement but to be fair it had lasted some 700 plus years. But their cement wasn't a patch on the hard Roman & Saxon stuff and for a week or so, with the weight of the massive tower pressing down, that middle core finally disintegrated and spewed dust by the bucketful every minute until, when the walls had finally lost their integrity it was disaster time. But with that weeks warning the fall of the tower and spire was expected and nobody was hurt or killed in the collapse. Thanks again for a most interesting video Richard.

The building at the crossing of the 4 main streets in Chichester is the market cross. The butter market is 50 or so yards up north street. Hardly a tour of Chichester though - so much more to see! But, as for the closing comments - if you keep walking in the direction of Westgate (where the vid finished) you’ll end up walking to Portsmouth - the Festival Theatre is beyond Northgate, in Oakland’s Park!

That's interesting - is that because of earthquakes?

@@RichardVobes Probably, though it may also have some theological reason behind it. Have you been to Lindos on Rhodes? They have a lovely church there & there are some interesting old buildings on Rhodes. Very interesting island. Theres the remains of an old town & you can see the whole layout of the town, the layout of the houses, the water supply, the baths, the market place, everything & its all on this hillside surrounded by pine trees & smelling of pine resin & with views of the sea. If you go to Lindos at Easter they include visitors in the celebrations. They gave us wine, roses & eggs. Very sweet.

Lolz even the subtitles know the local slang "shitty ster", priceless 👏. Its a crappy little city that's far more expensive to live in than can be justified, but it's safe enough, has just about everything you need and well it could be worse you could live in Bognor! 🤯

Seriously laughing at the atuto generated subtiles changing 'Chichester' to 'shitty stir' despite it saying Chichester on the screen at that precise moment.

That really isn't a busy Chichester. The town centre is usually far more crowded than that.

If it were filmed on the weekend or 2-4pm weekday it would be 15x more busy. This is quite tame...
