I worked in Chichester for 16 years as a Baker in 70 (sadly yet another Coffee shop has taken it over this year 2018 )North St Atkins rescued two Bakery books dated 1927 in a skip our builders threw away when we moved across the street to our new bakery ,in our cellar where we stored our tins was a big wooden door with iron bars on it behind that was huge stones like a collapse was told it was a secret tunnel for priests to escape to the Cathedral from the Roundheads .met my wife there she was shop Manageress at the time married her in 1977 41 years ago this July .

When the central tower fell in 1860 it left one heck of a void and that took a whole lot of sweeping up. Unfortunately the Normans built economy money saving structures and walls were constructed of dressed ashlar (stone blocks) and both faces and the middle was simply flint and rubble with a dollop of cement but to be fair it had lasted some 700 plus years. But their cement wasn't a patch on the hard Roman & Saxon stuff and for a week or so, with the weight of the massive tower pressing down, that middle core finally disintegrated and spewed dust by the bucketful every minute until, when the walls had finally lost their integrity it was disaster time. But with that weeks warning the fall of the tower and spire was expected and nobody was hurt or killed in the collapse. Thanks again for a most interesting video Richard.

The building at the crossing of the 4 main streets in Chichester is the market cross. The butter market is 50 or so yards up north street. Hardly a tour of Chichester though - so much more to see! But, as for the closing comments - if you keep walking in the direction of Westgate (where the vid finished) you’ll end up walking to Portsmouth - the Festival Theatre is beyond Northgate, in Oakland’s Park!
