WALKS IN WASHINGTONVILLE (NY) AND FELLER’S FARM - 1947
Friends and family-
This 1947 home movie shows my mother (Catherine Haas) and father (Lawrence W. Haas) visiting Washingtonville NY. They begin in downtown Washingtonville, and are then at Feller’s Farm, also in Washingtonville. The music is by my daughter, Anna Haas.
I hope you enjoy, and please share with others...
David

My wife and I bought our first home here in Washingtonville in 2018. I’m originally from The Bronx, I’ve lived in Monroe, Central Valley, Newburgh, Pearl River NY. I love it here in Washingtonville. Such a diverse community of working people making an honest living.

In the very early 1970s I lived, briefly, in Mountain Lodge. I remember, very well, the Winter season... the upper roads weren't paved, many of the little houses were Summer homes at the time. I've not been back since, but looking at Google satellite views is nothing short of astonishing! So much development. And I remember driving through Washingtonville then; such a sleepy little village, beautiful in its own right. The videos of Feller's caught my attention as I thought it the original of a resort I recall, approximately 3 miles South of centre village on 208. The entrance was on the right, travelling from the village, a dirt road that traversed a small brook, then continued up a hill for approximately a half mile. (On today's Google map, the road appears as "Main Entrance Drive".) Just before reaching the end of the road, to the left, was a swimming pool, set in a rather wooded area. At the end of the road, there was a "T" of sorts. To the right, a beautiful stone house and beyond that, a short row of bungalows. To the left, a rather magnificent, large, white house. Looking at a post-card (mentioned in other comments here) of Feller's, the lay-out of the grounds is quite similar: the location of the pool, the "main building" and the bungalows. Am I incorrect in assuming that the place I recall was Feller's? If not, I'd be interested to know any of the history of the place I recall and would be deeply appreciative of any information/insight anybody could provide. Thank you, meanwhile, Dr. Haas, for posting these heart-warming videos, for the memories they've given new breath to. In my "dotage", it's a delight to walk the old roads of youth, and comforting to become acquainted with others, never met, whose feet trod the same paths. (Should any-one be so inclined, I can be reached directly at jakessler@gmx.com ) Many sincere thanks to all.

@@davidw.haasm.d.7502 Dr. Haas, I sincerely appreciate the thoughtfulness of your reply as well as your documentation of the history of so very much, from Brooklyn to the Hudson Valley. It truly is quite amazing, and a bold statement on the changes of the areas and life, in general. The area from the valley to the Catskills was quite the "playground" for so many, for many years. But like Fellers, Brown's, Kutshers, the Concord, and the "mystery resort" off 208, time passes and so too, the "hot spots". I've been investigating the place on 208 for some years. Like Fellers, it's proving elusive. But I'll continue to hope that, one of these days, somebody will know somebody who remembers somebody who told a story and questions will find answers. Meanwhile, I'm enjoying your "documentaries". You and I are of about the same age, so the content and even the colours of the "film" are comfortingly familiar. Again, I thank you for all.

David - Thank you for posting this. I am historian for Blooming Grove. Born and raised here....might be called a dinosaur! I wish more people would share those old 8mm and photos of the village and area. This is a real treasure. And I love Anna's voice and the song is very beautiful!

Cool. I asked my brother exactly where our summer place was. He said it was between Monroe and Washingtonville in the 1950's, so must have been in or near Blooming Grove. He said it was 3 miles from Washingtonville, and 6 miles from Monroe, at the foot of Schunnemunk Mountain, at a group of summer homes called Mountain Lodge Park. Looking at the map I see a Mountain Lodge Road, a couple miles north of South Blooming Grove. Maybe was there? The ouside of the summer home is in one of the movies.

Also, I assume you've seen the other movie about Feller's in Washingtonville? You can find the link at our index page: haashomemovies.com A while back I sent a query to the Washingtonville official homepage many weeks ago, telling about the movie and asking if they had a way to share, but have not heard back. Do you have any ideas on this?

I just heard from a dear friend who lived in that area and she thinks it was near 207/208 at the Sarah Wells Trail split and was later turned into a resort kind of deal. That seems to fit into my memory, maybe near the Thew Orchards or that general area. I'm sure I'll hear from a couple of others about it and will let you know if I do.

Thank you so much for sharing this and the other video. I'm a local historian and lifelong resident of the area (32 yrs) and really appreciate this. Tell me, do you know where Feller Farm was/is located? I see a small road with high tension towers nearby, I know a few areas similar to that. I'd love to know. Thank you again!
