Hi Dave, I've done this walk and similar in the area but without a dog so much easier. One thing you, and others, might be interested in is the "Nile Clumps" planted on Horatio Nelson's death at the Battle of Trafalgar, which are just to the east of King Barrow Ridge (the bridlepath you were walking with Logan) and north of the A303. It's a collection of small plantations/clumps of trees from about 1805, laid out based on where the ships were positioned at Nelson's victory at the Battle of the Nile. Originally there were 26 clumps, which spread South across the A303 as well, but now only 17 exist. If you visit Stonehenge and are perplexed about why ancient people built all these banks and henges and walls and cursus, it's rather like why somebody in the 19C planted a bunch of trees to commemorate a famous battle. Utter madness in some ways, but people do crazy things given enough time and resources. Maybe it's something in the water in this area?

Thank you for the information about the "Nile Clumps". When you look at the landscape around there today (I realize that it may have been different, with more trees etc, many centuries ago), it does make you wonder what was so special about the area as it is so open, so relatively flat and really there is not much protection from the elements. I would love to be able to go back in time just to ask the question "Err, why are you building that, folks?"!

We know Woodhenge quite well, living not too many miles away in Ludgershall . When we were English Heritage members, we visited Stonehenge on several occasions. I remember lying on my stomach waiting for the sun to go down behind the stones with my camera at the ready. If you go into the centre (entrance), there is a great deal of information and demonstrations to look at.

It seemed the gods were not entirely on your side for this walk! A fascinating area though. I have visited Stonehenge a couple of times and always like to approach it on foot from the visitor centre though there is a bus shuttle service. Lots of barrows and earthworks all about so it must have been - and still is - a very special place. Loved the shot with Logan and his shadow!

Hi Dave, we love your videos! I can't help but thinking that you would be better off with a backpack than a bag slung to one side... better for the posture and you might avoid nasty falls? Just a suggestion?

Now that is funny that you say that! After using a satchel for 5 years ..... my wife has got me (for Christmas!) a Lowepro Camera Backpack! I found the satchel useful for "ease of access" to my camera & tripod but, as you correctly point out, it is not good having all the weight on one shoulder. From 2025 onwards, with the new camera backpack, it should be more comfortable. The tripod fits in nicely on the side (and Logan's rolled up mat will fit at the bottom) & I will have a small pouch on my waist , just for the camera.

Nice video Dave but I'll add a bit of local knowledge, woodhenge becomes a dogging site after dark and us locals don't visit Stonehenge, it's a rip off, Avebury is a much better destination and better dog walk.

@DaveFord park at the "unhenged" coffee shop car park on the bend by the cricket club, pay at the bar. It's much cheaper than the main car park and serves a good selection of cake and coffee.

The great thing about visiting Woodhenge is that it is free & the car park is very close to it.

They do say that an artist must suffer for his art and you certainly seemed to by taking that tumble. I suppose that if you were able to return the next day nothing major was damaged apart from your pride. I probably haven’t been in that area since some point in the 1970s. As a child in the 1960s we would stop en route to Devon or Cornwall and have a family picnic amongst the stones.

Yes, I remember as a nipper, visiting Stonehenge .... and I even had a photo of me sitting on one of the stones!
