Received my GM3 + moonlight kit few days ago. Yesterday made my first testflights on the AtomRC Swordfish (it balances just fine with a 4S 21700 pack all the way to the rear). VERY impressed with the results.. I especially like the fully stabilized mode, where the camera remains level with the horizon when the plane moves under it.... You can span & tilt to look around. Yesterday, the flight was quite bumpy, but the gimbal held it perfectly steady. Perhaps worth mentioning iNav 8.0 (nightlies) already support serial gimbal, meaning iNav (starting from 8.0) can control pan / tit / modes / sensitivity through a Uart from the Flight controller. So no need to use upto 4 PPM outputs for the gimbal. This works very good already in the still experimental iNav 8 versions. I don't use headtracking, but simly panning / tilting using a slider and knob from the radio (I have a V1 goggles, which doesn't have headtracking, otherwise I may have tried it via Avatar, rather then the RC link / FC route). Oh, and also can confirm, it is pretty sturdy....😋 Had a crash head-on into a potato field from about 10 mtrs, as one of the motors failed to re-start during final approach (unrelated to the Walksnail), and it dove in due to asymmetrical trust ... The corners from the 3d printed mounting plate, were the gimbal is attached broke clean off, but the gimbal / cam / VTX survived just fine. Very happy with it so far !

Tried 8.0 yesterday for serial control of the gimbal. Almost crashed my plane. After barely landing in manual mode whole FC froze :D Bench testing today gave the same results. Nothing happens on 7.1.2 though.

Pan should be the default control not tilt and roll. What the heck were they thinking? who are they trying to target with those?

Their primary use is for stabilisation. HT comes second.

Interesting, did that come from a contact at Walksnail as I've not had that detail. From the listing on the site - "Based on pilots feedback and implement head tracking function of goggles"

@@Painless360 they're all motorised gimbals with stabilisation applied by default when there is only power applied. The 3 modes determine which axis get locked and the sensitivity determines the amount of stabilisation. So with HT out of the equation each of the gimbal act as a stabilisation agent. Meaning that's their primary function.

Some of the testers have already got inav PR ready (with that work being forwarded to the ardu guys) so that the gimbal can be controlled directly from within inav (inav8). This will hopefully mean that any servo connected to an output can be controlled via the goggles HT module opening up conventional pan/tilt setups to be controlled via the goggles.

That gimbal is great news for those of us who have been too obsessed with aerodynamic efficiency to even consider gimbals before. It doesn’t seem to cause much more drag than fixed camera setups. It even looks like the gimbal unit could be sunk deeper into the foam if we really wanted to minimize the wetted area.

American Motocross currently uses Cinewhoop style quads with either Walk or DJI .. It is the future of cinematography in LIVE action track type sports and allow follow behind and never before ability to see race lines live .. Cheers

Tested the GM3 with the Gimbal FW 3.2 in like 15-20 flights with different gain settings (7" Quad) in the "Pitch and roll keep level - mode" . There are a lot of problems / bugs , so be prepared to spend a lot of money for a "Beta - Version" .. It's not uncommon for Caddx to not be the fastest in fixing software, if they solve it at all... :-)

I will say - just about everything in this video was something new, innovative, useful. Way to go Walksnail!!! I was slowly becoming a fan but here now, I might just be fully on board!!! The low price goggles, the whoop size air units, all of these items. I really like the gimbals, that could be a very useful item. However, and this is a bit of an issue, the video quality for Walksnail is not quite DJI 03 which is not quite GoPro... It would be nice to at least get the recording up to GoPro standards, would be nice if they "fixed" all the issues that have seen with their goggles, not the new low cost one, that is a winner, B+ work, or A-, just missing a few features that I would like to have.... that is all, great info here, thanks for bringing it to us, cheers.

i have exactly the same setup - updated goggles L & moonlight to the latest, the pic needed to be inverted 180, but the gyros are all moving opposite direction & the head tracking will not work, have reset etc & PTZ mode, nothing works.

What are the chances the 04 Air Units accommodate this gimbal? DJI and Caddx were friendly, right? I was considering a wholesale switch of HD systems with the looming ban, but it seems DJI isn't being specifically targeted anymore.

They were, but DJI cut off any cooperation when Caddx went Walksnail. DJI now loves RunCam!

Thanks for a great gimball review! I have the walksnail v1 goggles and have never tried head tracking. Should i get the L or X goggles, or will a head tracking module over elrs(or something?) work just as well. A little worried about latency.

Hi Lee, since you have both the GT VTX and the GM3, I'm guessing you noticed that there is no easy way to connect them since the GT VTX doesn't have a "USB" port like the Moonlight and HD VTX have. I found out from Caddx that the way to connect them is to solder the TX/RX wires from the gimbal to the small TX3/RX3 pads on the GT VTX (not the big TX2/RX2 pads accessible from the outside, these small pads are on the inside). I'm worried about trying such a precision soldering job on such an expensive VTX, plus putting a hole in the case for the wires to pass through. Have you looked into this at all? Any suggestions?

Will this new DVR/VTx combo still record 4K like the one with the Moonlight kit? The single and dual axis gimbal will be more for piloting, while the 3 axis if for film making, TV, etc production - Gimbal plus Moonlight camera at 4K, 2watts of digital downlink power, and the VRx unit will make for a VERY easy way to add multirotor, heli or fixed wing footage in to Broadcast Sports Productions at the lower end of the budget scale - A wing with a little gimbal underneath could easily be used to chase Rally cars or Hill Climbs like Pike Peak, without the flight time limits of a Quad. This will be especially useful for anyone doing a live streamed production with multiple sources being vision switched in OBS or vMix from HDMI and SDI sources.

@@Painless360 Damn shame there, that much power for a downlink, the HD is going to be super reliable, but would have been better if 4K camera and DVR - 4K downconverted makes better HD, then a HD only camera. Didn't realise the GM1 is pitch only, expected is was for Pan only. That means it's for Quadcopters, so as they pitch over the camera angle stays the same, nice for gentle flying, useless for freestyle or racing.

Can it talk to the fc? How does it react to pilot inputs, is it in the know or just reacting to the movements of the plane? It looks like those gummies are soft enough to cause a sense of control lag in the goggles alone.

Can you tell me why the walksnail gt I have went into bind mode a single time when it first came out of the box and has since not been able to go back into bind mode no matter how many times I hit the button or hold the button? Just a simple flashing green light?

Is this right that - GM gimbal does not work with GT VTX, only moonlight. Brilliant videos I’m just about to purchase a set up and struggling to get answers from sellers. I would like Avatar L with GM3 and moonlight. Also I was going to get the GT kit so I could have 2 set ups. Exciting but really frustrating to get into.

Details listed on the Caddx site - "The gimbal can't be used with V1 VTX, Mini 1s, Nano V3 and GT VTX, but can only be used with V2 VTX, V2 VTX Dual and Moonlight VTX." I'm working on a full overview and flight demo using the HT stuff...

@@Painless360 Hi again, here’s my pain 😤I have just pulled the pin and bought my first FPV set up all walksnail. Goggles Avatar L GT kit, Moonlight Kit and a HD mini 1s kit. Goggles and GT kit worked straight out the box and the goggles are on the 38.43.4 firmware. The problem is with the moonlight and the 1s kits. I can’t get either to bind I’ve flashed a micro sd in the Moonlight and tried the one else to from caddx download and nothing the Is stays red the moonlight has gone as far as one blue light and one green…..help! 😬😂

when updating the moonlight are you unplugging the gimbal wire and using the small jumper wire included in the box? that way it updates the vtx and the dvr at the same time

Thanks again. No power restriction, used 4 different SD cards and tried all different later versions of the firmware too. It is odd, I hope that Walksnail can shed some light on why it won't update as the LEDs don't give any 'error' codes either..
