This Jazz Piano Tutorial is about Mistakes.
In my opinion, the main characteristic that defines Jazz is spontaneity. You can’t have Jazz without at least some level of improvisation, that is, you can’t have Jazz without making stuff up. That’s really the big difference between playing in a Jazz band and playing in an orchestra. In an orchestra, you play exactly what’s written, whereas in a Jazz band you can play what you like - there are no wrong notes.
But it is impossible to have spontaneity without also having mistakes. The former implies the latter. If you’re making stuff up on the spot, you will occasionally hit a wrong note. And that’s ok. If fact, that’s desirable. Mistakes are what makes Jazz, Jazz.
There are hundred examples of professional Jazz musicians absolutely stuffing it up and making countless mistakes on recordings. Now the band could have recorded another take to get it right the next time, but that defeats the purpose of Jazz.

Tommy Flanagan's messed up solo on Giant Steps is awesome. He was obviously unprepared for this kind of tempo. I wonder how many times they made fun of him for that afterwards lol

Interesting lesson. I've noticed I have the most fun when I just dive into a song, hit something off kilter, and then find my way back. It usually is surprisingly good. The worst "mistake" however--and the one I tend to try to avoid is "resolving to tonic too early." I hate the sound of that. It's almost better to nail tritones or some out of key notes accidentally than to hit the "1" too early.

These comments are missing the point of the this video. Because jazz is a spontaneous art form, mistakes are a part of process! Period! The legendary professional musicians he cites even flubbed up on their own recordings! But they knew how to recover! And here I am thinking they played everything perfectly all the time. Thanks s much for this video! I really needed it after my several mistakes at my gig last night. I wonder is there a place in jazz pedagogy that teaches HOW to recover from mistakes?

Awesome stuff. Thanks for differentiating between the orchestra and a jazz band. I love your statement: ' jazz is a spontaneous art form and mistakes are part of the process'. You've given info to perform with more confidence. I'm a jazz accordionist.

Watch out for rythmic problemes or being lost in the changes. In jam session it can be very annoying.
